InactiveHello 🙂 I will try to make a long story short… One of my 16 month old twin daughters, born at 29 weeks and 14 ounces has been spitting up 1-3 times after each feed regardless of the amount (2-4 ounces). Up until she was about 8 months old, she was on Enfamil Elcare and she was a “silent refuxer””. She was never on any meds and when she came home, we didn’t even think of reflux as a problem.
Around 7-8 months old, she started having these VERY DEEP, LONG burps. It sounded like it came from the pit of her stomach. Around that same time, she stopped eating as much. Two weeks into this, she got pneumonia and spent a few more months in the hospital. She went through a lot during that time, and now she has an oral aversion (wont eat anything at all), she still has those deep burps, throws up after ever feed, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Sometimes it’s right after a feed, sometimes an hour later. Also, before the last lengthly hospital trip, we took her to the ER one day because she was so lethargic and they found nothing other than “excessive air in her stomach that could be the onset of a digestive problem”…. This was around the same time the burps started. This is why I wonder if there is a problem other than reflux, however, the doctors just say it’s reflux and I don’t even know the right questions to ask. She was also moved to Elecare after her last hospital stay because they found fats in her stools and said she had some mal-absorbtion. Her nutritionist felt fine moving her on to normal foods as long she had no allergic reaction, no diarrhea, or worsening reflux.
We keep her upright for 30-60 min after try to feed her no more than 4 oz at a time, and we’ve tried all sorts of meds. Right now she’s on No Gerd, a natural medicine given by her naturopathic doc. That was working great until she got a cold because it made her burp (It also worked for my mom, clearing up her symptoms). Prilosec was okay, but her insurance is trying to charge $1000 for it and $800 for Prevacid.
So, my question is….1) is there a way that I can get Prevacid for her over the counter or for cheaper than $800!? It’s not that expensive OTC so I’d like to go that route if I can 2) Does this sound like typical reflux to you? Or maybe like another digestive problem.
Thank you for reading! I hope there is some help out there!

InactiveHi! Wow, on your other post I said you’d been through a lot but you’ve been through a TON.
I hope Lori (s&h’s mum) chimes in re: the oral aversion as she has experience w/ that & can help/tell you w/ what to ask regarding tests, etc.
I replied on your other post re: your Prevacid OTC route but I’ll copy/paste here…
One thing to consider if you want to try moving back to a PPI (if the natural stuff doesn’t seem to provide complete reflux relief) is to buy the Prevacid capsules OTC & mix w/ Buffer Babies (you can order this from marci-kids.com) to make a compounded suspension @ home. This would definitely be a cheaper option!
So, check out all of Laura’s info as it’s all great stuff… then also go over to marci-kids.com to read all that info & see what Hope’s recommended dosage is!
Hang in there mama!erinntx2010-02-25 16:15:46

InactiveThank you for your help! I will definitely try that if the natural stuff doesn’t work. Hope has had a good day today, so we’ll see how she keeps up as her cold gets better. Thank you again for your help!
