Infantreflux.org | Zegerid not working?

Hello everybody! I’ve been reading this great forum and found a lot of useful info, however I need more help. My son is 5 months old 17 lb, been on Zantac, which stopped working a couple of weeks ago, been put on Prevacid solutabs 7,5×2 a day, increased to x3 a day.Seemed to work but what a hassle with timing!!! So I printed info about Zegerid from Marci kids and took it to PED, she was ok with prescribing it with marci kids dosing!!! Yey!!!

So I started giving it to him 3 days ago and he seems to have a worst sx ever!! Why could that be and what should I do? I still give him Zantac 2cc twice a day. Today was especially horrible day – baby was moaning, crying all day long, wouldn’t eat his formula – I had to sleep feed him, he is drooling so much/// I don’t know what to do anymore/ I ordered buffer babies kit and it arrived today, so I wonder should I mix it with OTC prevacid or give Zegerid more time to work!!! Please help!!!

I would give the zegerid at least 2wks to see if it works. it can take that long to really kick in. The drooling and his age make them think Teething which can irritate reflux so that could be part of the problem as well. You can rub some liquid benadryl on his gums which should help with the drooling some. I don’t have any experience with zegerid so hopefully one those moms will chime in too.

Are you using the 20mg or 40mg packets of zegerid? Are you mixing it with Tums or Mylanta? It does take some time for the body to adjust. It’s sort of like a battle with the acid and meds and in the end the medicine WILL win out…but sometimes theres a rough patch between days 3-8. Hang in there…hopefully it’ll get better!!! My guess is the troubles are arising from the sodium bicarb in the zegerid…which is also in the Buffer Babies. So I’d hang tight with the zegerid for a little bit longer before switching. 🙂

Thank you ladies! Apparently my son has an entero virus and the sx are masking as the reflux flare , so happy we saw our ped the day before yesterday! We are using the Buffer Babies/Prevacid OTC now and are very happy with the results! The worst part is over….
