InactiveMy 9 month old had 3 seizures (or episodes) this past weekend, the only thing he had prior to these was a febral seizure a month ago with 103.5 fever. These ones were with no temp and the third one was in the hospital, 17hrs after being admitted but of course 6hrs prior to getting the EEG or video hooked up. The EEG showed it was not Epileptic and so they released us, as if it being non-epileptic meant that they could care less. They mentioned it possibly being Sandifer’s or Crushing so I have been looking on-line. There is one seizure on YouTube that is very similar, it is called Zoe 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQMMdA2am7Q
The major difference with this video as well as everything I read about Sandifer’s is that my son has a postical state. Before the event his eyes start to flutter, the they go up and to the right, then his arms/fists tighten and his arms/legs shake with small motions as if from your muscles tightening (not spasming). He then has a blank stare and starts to loosen up. After 30-60 seconds he’ll then go limp and be groggy and in a transe before going in to a 20-30 minute postical sleep. Anyone seen this?

InactiveI should mention as well, he was on Previcid until a month ago for acid reflux so it is aweful coincidental timing. They put him on Zantax as of yesterday as they say it is more age appropriate. So this may fix the issue, it’s just nagging at me why I see no one mentioning a postictal state with Sandifer’s.

InactiveI’m sorry to hear that you’re going through this. Seizures can be very scary. My older daughter has a seizure disorder which started with febrile seizures. My younger daughter had sandifer’s due to reflux, but not seizures. There is a definite difference, though can be hard to tell. I have to say that what you describe sounds more like a tonic clonic seizure than sandifer’s, though it doesn’t mean it is. What are his feet like during the event? Are they pointed down? Are the arms in front or above the head? The fact that he has had a febrile seizure, or a seizure with fever, is also suspiciuos in combination with the other episodes. Sandifer’s does not have a post ictal state. Also, when did the events happen.. was it related to a feeding? That’s when sandifer’s often happens. Also, was he sitting or being held during an episode. If sitting, then he would fall over with a seizure. I would personally get him in to see a good ped neuro. I’d ask for a video EEG if you haven’t already and an MRI, and take note of what happens precisely during the event- time, what his body is doing etc. I’d also get him in to a good Ped GI. YOu want to make sure that the dose of prevacid is high enough and that you’re giving it correctly. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com. Hopefully your son’s episodes are just sandifer’s and not seizures, but it can be harder to tell in a baby. Because some signs point toward possible seizure, you want to make sure it’s ruled out carefully. My daughter has never had an abnormal EEG, which is not uncommon for people with known epilepsy. I hope that you find some answers. Good luck.
