InactiveWe just saw a pedi GI on Thursday for the first time and he is having us do a 7 day Neocate trial to rule out a milk protein intolerance vs. acid reflux alone. Miles seems to be doing okay on the Neocate (haven’t seen any improvement in symptoms yet though. In fact, he seems to be spitting up more than before) but he is having a really hard time with the thin consistency of the Neocate. He is choking on every bottle we give him now (he wasn’t doing that on his other formula) and then refuses to eat after he has a choking spell. Has anyone else had this happen? And did anyone’s LO get worse on Neocate before they got better? The GI said not to give him ANYTHING else during the next 7days, like cereal. We switched to the slowest flow nipples we have and he still seems to have trouble. I don’t know what to do! I’m skeptical of products like ThickIt and SimplyThick, but they may be the only solution. And of course all this is happening on the weekend and a holiday week when the doc’s office is closed. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks!

InactiveThere are lots of moms on here who have had their babies have a hard time with the thinness of the elementals like neocate/elecare so just try and give it time, he should figure out who to adjust his suck/swallow so that it doesn’t happen. I think you may need to do more than a 7 days trial, some times it can take up to a month for all the offending proteins to get out of their systems, so if he seems to be getting better I might stick with it longer. What formula was he on before you switched? Is he on any meds? I wouldn’t do thickit or simply thick unless he starts aspirating as that is what they are used to prevent.

InactiveI’m sorry I didn’t see your post sooner!! I agree with Cooper’s mom that it may take a little longer than 7 days to see a difference in your little guy. If your child has been experiencing negative symptoms for some time, his condition may take time to improve. If he does have a milk/soy protein allergy or intolerance it can cause inflammation and irritation that needs time to heal. From personal experience my 16wk LO has a milk/soy interolerance that was causing green/mucuousy/blood streaked stools…it took well over a month to finally have “normal” diapers again once I started an elimination diet (I’m nursing him)… hang in there!!!

InactiveWell, things have changed a bit since I posted this. After 4 days of being on the Neocate the GI doc took him off of it since we hadn’t seen a lot of difference. We did see some, but not a lot. I was furious because I’m not a doctor and even I know it would take more than 4 days to see a drastic change. So, now we’re basically back to square one. 🙁

Inactiveoh gosh! I’m so sorry to hear that. What did formula did the GI switch you to? Elecare or Nutramigen AA, they are both hypoallergenic formulas. If you don’t think it was appropriate to take him off Neocate maybe you could get a second opinion? Poor guy!
