InactiveDo any of you with your kids in daycare find that their sleep is disrupted on days that they go? I’m asking because we were on vacation last week so Owen wasn’t in daycare for about 10 days or so. That whole time he was sleeping through the night, every night, until 6:30 or 7am. It was wonderful! He went back to daycare on Monday and slept well again Monday night, but then Tuesday and Wednesday nights he was up again – Tuesday from about 2am – 3am, last night from about 4:15 – 4:30. It’s not that bad but he won’t go back to sleep without us going in (and believe me, we’ve let him cry for a while before going in). Last night it was my turn so I gave him some water in case he was thirsty, gave him some motrin in case it was teeth, and then just rocked him for a few minutes and he went right back into his crib.
I thought maybe it was hunger because Tuesday night he’d had a really small dinner, but last night he ate from about 4pm – 7:30pm straight! He had a hamburger, a hot dog, about 10 potato puffs, a bowl of ziti with sauce, AND pretzles and some banana. Plus an 8oz bottle of alimentum – so there is NO WAY that kid was hungry! The only thing that I can think of is that maybe he doesn’t nap as well at school and that affects his sleep at night? We notice that he always seems to sleep better on the weekends, particulary by Sunday morning (he’s home Friday with me so that’s the 3rd day that he’s home all day). When he’s home with us he has about a 2 hour nap in the afternoon – I just doubt that he sleeps that long at school with all of the excitement there.
Anyone have any ideas? Just when I was getting used to sleeping!! Oh well, at least he’s still in a good mood and still eating well – at least so far!

InactiveMarisa is not in daycare but I can tell you from my friends’ and
sister’s experiences that this is VERY common. Daycare is great for
many reasons but it can also be overstimulating – so many fun things to
see and do.Also, it’s possible that he got very used to being with you and your DH
all the time while on vacation and his separation anxiety is acting up
a bit now that he’s back in daycare and not with you guys all day?I’d guess combination of overtired/overstimulated and separation
anxiety. Perhaps with overtired you can make his bedtime a little
earlier? With SA, does he have a special blanket or stuffed animal he
is attached to?April 27, 2006 at 10:52 am #6981Anonymous
InactiveWhen I worked in daycare I noticed that the babies/toddlers rarely slept more than an hour at a time. I knew they probably would sleep longer, but there is so much noise and distraction, and they all sleep in the same room, or in close proximity, so it’s probably hard for them to get their full nap.
Daytime sleep definitely effects nightime sleep. Owen may be overtired when he doesn’t get his full nap at daycare. When kids are overtired they often sleep less, not more, because of the adrenaline that is released when the body becomes over tired.
Actually, from what you say, I think he’s sleeping pretty well, though. Lots of babies wake in the night and take time to settle and go back to sleep. (Myles does this almost every night!). If he’s happy most of the time he’s probably getting enough sleep overall.
You can maybe ask the teachers how long he sleeps and see if there are better arrangements they can make to give him a longer nap. Maybe put him down earlier than the others so he gets a head start on his sleep. Or is there a quieter place he can sleep? Do they have sleeping rooms, or do the babies sleep in the same room they play in? If they have sleeping rooms, they can maybe put some white noise in there for him (and the other babies) to drown out some of the noise.
What time does he go to bed? Sometimes putting them to bed earlier actually helps them sleep better and longer. If he’s not in bed by 7:30 or 8pm, I’d try getting him down earlier and see if that helps. If he’s going to bed at 8pm now, try 7:30 a few nights. (I’m working on this with Myles, but I have to keep him up later than I want because he has to get his third dose of Prevacid, wait 30 minutes, then eat). It’s hard to sqeeze those three doses in on an empty stomach.
BTW, Owen is an adorable name!
