InactiveWe started solids when ds turned 4 months old. The ped. said go ahead with the cereal in a spoon since he has reflux. He would not take it in his bottles. He filled up on it to quick and would not finish a bottle so we had to stop. Anyway, he has stopped taking his usual 6 ounces with the next bottle after his cereal. Is this normal? He gets a bottle at 6:00, 10:00, 12:00 (cereal), 2:00, 6:00, and 10:00. Today he only took 3 ounces at the 2:00 bottle. Is is because he had the cereal and he just was not as hungry? Do you have any suggestions about feeding him his solids. Will this continue as I add breakfast and dinner? How much formula are your little ones taking while eating solids?

InactiveI just started solids. We do about 2 tlbs. of oatmeal in the morning and before bed, and a jar of veggies (so far we are only at carrots) for diner. He has been taking 6 ounce bottles and usualy only drinks between 2-4 ounces after eating. I just keep track of his total formula intake and he is still getting over 20 ounces a day so I think it is fine.
How much cereal are you giving him? Maybe a little less at a time would not get him as full? My so would eat it forever if I let him!
This is all still pretty new to us so we are still figuring out what works. You will problable you some more solid advice from some of the more experienced moms

InactiveAt four months I only gave my first two about 2-3 tbs of cereal twice per day. Ellie wouldn’t drink breast milk or formula if it was thickened at all. If it’s not in their bottle I don’t think it helps much with reflux, so the only reason to give it to them is to introduce them to spoon feeding, or to supplement their diet if they are not getting enough from bottles. (This is my opinion anyway, maybe someone else knows if spoon feeding cereal helps with reflux).
Myles does take cereal in some of his bottles and I think it does help with his reflux. And, he does drink less when it is thickened. (3-4 ounces instead of 5). Are you not putting cereal in his bottle because he doesn’t drink 6 ounces when you do?
If he’s keeping down plain formula, then I would say it’s fine to just feed him un-thickened formula and give him a little cereal with the spoon. If he really needs thickened formula in order to control his reflux and keep it down, then you shouldn’t worry too much about him drinking less. It’s only natural that he will drink less becuase the thickened formula is so much more calorie dense.
If Marshall is eating enough with his unthickened bottles (and keeping it down), I wouldn’t worry too much about feeding him solids at this age. Just a little cereal like you are giving him to get him used to the spoon is fine. And yes, he will likely drink less formula as you increase his cereal intake.
I hope that helps. Sorry, I tend to ramble!

InactiveAidan is 5 months and eats like this (all bottles have cereal in them, 3 tbs per 4 oz or 5 tbs Per 6 oz, oatmeal)
6 am-4-6 oz’z
nap
9 am, cereal mixed with formula
11-12ish 4-5 oz bottle
nap
1:45ish-solids (usually carrots, squash sometiems green veggies)-he’ll eat between 1/2 and 1 serving
4-4 oz bottle
5:30-solids-sometimes a whole serving sometimes half
7:30 6 oz bottle
8-bedtime
For the last couple of weeks, the little bugger had been waking up around 2 for another bottle….going to try to wake him up around 11 to see if I can break the habit.
and he takes catnaps on and off during the day-so he eats between 16-22 oz a day with the solids

InactiveI have been giving him only one tablespoon of cereal from a spoon. He would keep eating it if I let him because he always gets so mad when I take the bowl away. He just loves to eat from the spoon. He gets so happy when he sees the bowl coming. He still takes 6 ounces at each of the other feedings so he is getting 27 ounces of formula each day.
He only spits up about once after each feeding without cereal in the bottle. He used to be a silent refluxer but just recently he started to spit up. You can always hear it come up and it just goes back down. I will have to just continue to play with it. From what you all have said, he seems to be on the right track. Thanks for all the help!

InactiveIf he loves the cereal and is drinking that much formula, I’d say go ahead and give him some more!! He’s getting plenty of formula. My little guy only drinks about 15 ounces a day!!
I think it’s great that he’s so interested in solids. Some babies don’t take a long time to get used to spoon feedings. You’re ahead of that game with little Marshall. (Cute name
