InactiveHello,
I have been reading everyone’s post and I am a newbie. DS is 2 months old and has been very fussy, inconsolable crying, congestion, wheezing sound and spits up/vomits.He is gaining weight. He was originally on Similac Lactosefree and the doc switched him to Gentlease. Since this switch he seems to spit up more – I’m not sure if it’s because the consistency is thinner. I decided to go straight to Alimentum.
He has been on Alimentum for 5 days now and I am not sure if I should keep him on it. He has had fine, pimple like rashes on his cheeks but I don’t think this relates to protein allergies. His congestion seems to be a little better but I’m not sure if it’s just going away or the actual formula has helped.
We had an UGI done today and the radiologist said she does not see anything significant and he will fax the results to the pediatrician.
If there is no reflux what is the next step?
I am in need of help and have no idea what to do. Could something else be wrong?
Thanks in advance…Sabrina

Welcome!! The one thing that I would like to tell you is that it has been proven that upper GI’s are not the only way to determine if an infant does or does not have reflux. I have read that an upper GI may not show the reflux if the baby isn’t refluxing at the time. Just something you may want to keep in mind.
Hopefully it isn’t reflux but if it is, you have found the right place for support and information.
Take care!!

InactiveOops, hit “post reply” too soon.
Both of my daughters had silent reflux (didn’t spit up) but had terrible results on both Nutramigen and Alimentum. The consistancy was too thin and when we tried them on it, they began to spit up. Once we took them off, the spitting up stopped. Don’t know if anyone else has had that experience with their little refluxers but that was ours. I know that for various reasons, babies need to be on those formulas but for strictly reflux, we didn’t have any success.

InactiveSabrina,
If you feel that your baby has reflux, persist with your doctors to get your son diagnosed and properly treated. UGI’s are not used to diagnose reflux, though as Robin said, they can sometimes show reflux- they are meant to diagnose specific abnormalities of the GI tract, and even then they’re fallible and can miss things. I hope that your son gets relief soon. The early days can be very hard, so hang in there. Good luck to you.

InactiveAlimentum and nutramigen still have milk proteins in them that a sensitive baby can react to if mspi(milk/soy protein intolerent). Some things to look for are loose, musousy stools, sometimes with black peices of blood in them, major painful gas, and frequent spitting up. Have you noticed that when you switch formulas, everything is fine for a few days, and then they start to fuss again? We went through 6 of them. Some forumulas are waterlike consistentcy, so many of us moms have to thicken with cereals. Stay away from rice it will be too binding constipates easily. Beech nut brand is soy free, we use the oatmeal and have since 4 months old. (just a tbs or 2).
From what you described it sounds like reflux. We had an upper gi done to diagnose dd. Does your son pull away from the bottle, arch, scream and cry? It used to take dd 30 to really start feeling the burn. Always hold baby upright for 30 mins after eating. (we never put ours down flat) and have him sleep on an incline. We use a wedge sling combo at 60 degree angle. We used to have her sleep in her carseat or swing (even on me). Also, before we got prevacid we used mylanta cherry supreme before bottles and when things got bad. I think we used .5 ml at 2 months. If you give to much, you get loose stools.
Ohh, also my baby choked and gurgalled alot when i was feeding her, we had a barium swallow study done and found out she had a swallowing dysfunction form prematurity and had to thicken her formula with something called simply thick. So maybe, that could be something to mention as well. Good luck to you, hope you find the answers you are looking for!
