InactiveNoah just turned 1 and he still is eating the same amount as he has for the last 3 or 4 months. He takes 24 oz of formula (sleep fed and syringe fed still, and 8 oz of solids). I’m just curious how much your babies ate around that age (solids and milk). Also, was anyone else still giving their baby pureed food at that age?

My middle child ate baby food exclusively until she was 19 months old!!! She was very resistant to new things and wouldn’t eat any table food until she was 19 months. Some doctors discourage the baby food thing after 15 months or so, but I strongly, strongly disagree. My feeling is that if they are eating pureed baby food, they are getting excellent nutrition, so why not give it to them? My friend’s doctor discouraged her from feeding her toddler baby food past 15 months and that little girl still eats no fruits and no veggies at all, and she’s 4 1/2 years old.My daughter finally started trying different foods and now at 2 1/2 she eats a pretty good variety of fruits and veggies. I have no regrets whatsoever about feeding her baby food as long as I did. She still will eat pureed foods when offered which is great because if we are eating something she hates, she’ll have a few jars of applesauce and pureed veggies and be happy as a clam.
As for the amount he is eating, one year olds do tend to eat less than they did as infants. The growth rate is slowing so they don’t need as much as they did as infants. They’ll be growth spurts that come and go and his appetite will vary from day to day, week to week.
Hope that helps. Try not to worry.

InactiveMy oldest was still on baby food at one, poor little guy only had like 3 teeth, all in front and it was hard for him to figure out how to chew the “big boy” foods (although mine now, at 6 is like your friends daughter christine-lol the kid HATES veggies, loves fruit though)

InactiveHey Lisa
Hope things are improving somewhat with Noah… i don’t have much experience but one thing my ped told me is that most babies eat almost same amout of food (calories) from when they are about 9 months until they are about 1.5 years old> I don’t have any experience… but maybe that happened with your 2 older ones?
I have a friedn who was here yesterday. Her dd is 18months old an really healthy but skinny. She did not touch table food or put it to her mouth until she was 15mnths ago. She took her to some therapists and they all said it was fine, that she would start getting interested one day….
Again, i don’t have experience in this and we are hoping that some of these things apply to Matthew…. We are already giving him around 1200 calories a day so i am hoping that number is pretty constant for the next few months!!
saw your post on feeding therapy… i know that lalexander (she posted under tube feeding) is going for an evaluation at feeding clinich on the 17th or so and we are going on the 16th… so check for posts around those dates.

InactiveHi Thais
I was wondering how little Matthew has been doing. Is his oral feeding improving? He must really be growing well since he is taking in 1200 calories! I am lucky to get 950 cal into Noah. I guess thats why he is 19 lbs 13 oz and hasnt grown much in the last 2 months. I cant seem to increase his calories anymore that what I already am. Poor little guy is falling off the growth charts.
Definitely keep us posted about your feeding clinic appt. I hope it goes well.

InactiveHey!
You would think he is growing with 1200 calories… well, not really! He is still 18pounds (i know not that little, but for a tube fed baby… they are asking us to try and get him to put on some more weight…). He was around 29 inches or so so they were OK with the weight (the ped was and the GI was not)…
We have our days. He now takes formula (YEAH!!!)… minimum of 6ounces orally per day… we have had some days when he has taken 14ounces but those are rare. His purees… well again, he eats from 1 ounce a day to a maximum of 6 ounces on a good day… so i would say he is between 50 and 75% tube fed now (100% if he is sick). Not much improvement. He is strong so he will not eat if he does not want to. Also, he has started throwing up again. Nothiing to do with the food… seems mainly when he is upset or nervous (ie lately as soon as we walk down the stairs to put him to bed at night, he throws up…). Gotta love these kids.
Almost 20lbs is probably our goal for him at 1year old… so don’t worry… you are doing a great job. I hope you are holding on OK… i have my days… i will keep you updated on the therapy

InactiveThanks for the updates guys. Always good to hear how everyone is doing. This feeding aversion thing is SO hard and frustrating. I would have no qualms (is that a word?) about giving purees Lisa. I wish I could get Hailey to eat them. She won’t let me feed her anything at all. If I even come near her with a spoon she goes nuts and swipes at it and starts to cry! If I try to give her the spoon, she turns it upside down so the food falls off and chews on the side without the food on it. Clever little things aren’t they?
I try to put puree food on cookies and let her suck it off, but if she sees the puree on it she tosses it on the floor. Did you know that puree food turns into cement if it’s not wiped up right away? We are trying to give her soy milk from a cup (half soy and half water) only because it’s really the only thing other than plain water that she’s ever sort of liked. She doesn’t take much though. How is Noah doing with table foods? Is he showing any interest? Is he taking any awake feedings? How many night bottles is he taking? I’m asking because we recently saw a doc who made me feel like I should be arrested for still giving Hailey a middle of the night feed. I just felt so awful after I left his office. But I tried to remind myself that it’s what I have to do to keep her thriving- either she’ll be getting a bottle at night, or she’ll have a tube and get tube feeds at night, so in the end it’s no different. As for formula, she takes about 15 ounces, and lately has been having trouble keeping that all down due to a terrible cough. Anyhow, didn’t mean to hijack your post…. I guess to answer your question, I say to whatever works. I wouldn’t worry about doing purees for as long as he needs to.May 9, 2006 at 6:43 am #7715Anonymous
InactiveMy friend who had preemie reflux twins finally has them solidly on
table foods now – at 21 months. They didn’t even start purees until 9
or 10 months and until 15 or 16 months they wouldn’t even try table
foods – all they wanted was the purees. But they are healthy boys (well
one is still very underweight but healthy) and now eating turkey
meatballs, chicken, fruit slices, etc.1200 calories – wow! I’m lucky to get 600 into Marisa! I still don’t understand how that girl grows so much…

InactiveHey Lori
About the nightfeedings… that is such BS. Most babies who are not thriing and therefore are on tube feedings end up having a lot of feedings through the night… Matthew still has 2 because we cannot get the volume into him all through the day!! How upsetting about doctors.
Is Hailey interested in immtating you yet?? One thing thtat Matthew has started doing is drinking from our glass. Everytime i have a drink, he goes crazy and wants to imitate me… so we just give him whatever we are drinking and he loves it (although chokes) but he will not go near his cups… that does not happen with food, but who knows
According to my GI, babies at this age need 110 cal per kilo, so if Marisa is around 9 kilos, she should need 1000 calories! However, i really think that most babies don’t need that many calories until they are walking. I guess Matthew’s metabolism is really fast (but, i was always a big eater and always had a lot of trouble putting weight on when i was younger… i guess it is hereditary…).

InactiveInteresting re calories/kilo. M is 20 pounds – so I guess that’s just
over 9 kilos. NEVER near 1000 calories – on a really big day we used to
get 700! Lately we’ve been around 550. And she’s pretty active – good
amount of rolling and commando crawling and all. I often wonder if she
has DGE – her slow metabolism combined with her constipation and all…About the cups – Marisa LOVES open cups too. She gets annoyed with
sippys and straw cups – I keep trying but she won’t take much. But help
her with an open cup and she drinks and gets so excited. Gerber makes a
Lil Trainer Toddler Cup that is like an open cup but with some sort of
top to help prevent spills. Might look into that and skip sippy stage
altogether?May 9, 2006 at 10:29 am #7727Anonymous
InactiveI guess that walking and really crawling though makes a big difference?? Who knows. Some friends were here on sunday with their girl and oh gosh… i am not looking forward to Matthew’s independence!!!
Let me know about the cup… i wish he would imitate my eating too 🙂

InactiveI just wanted to chime in about the calorie intake. Myles is 19 1/2 pounds and thrives on less than 700 calories per day!! If I was trying to get 110 calories per Kilo into him I’d be driving myself and him insane. He just doensn’t need that much. It doesn’t really surprise me since both dh and I have obesity in our families. We both gain weight easily and can practically live on air. It’s definitely heredity.
And, I definitely think DGE plays a role. These babies don’t experience hunger like other babies because their little tummies just don’t empty properly. I think maybe the longer the food stays in the tummy, the more nutrients are absorbed, which is why babies with DGE thrive on less calories.
Lisa, I didn’t realize Noah was falling off the charts with his weight. All the more reason to feed him as much purees as he wants. I hope things get better for him soon. It must be so hard to have to “sleep feed” a one year old. Makes me feel bad for all the complaining I do about Myles’ reflux.

InactiveFunny about the imitating Thais! Hailey will imitate us, but not when it comes to eating. She does like an open cup, but chokes WAY too much to let her use it b/c we’re afraid of aspiration. When she chokes then she vomits anyhow, so not really a solution for her. In the meantime, this cold has really taken it’s toll on her. I just can’t get her to take more than 10 oz or so of formula a day, and then she’s coughing so much that she’s throwing most of it up. Also, we just got back from the doc and she has a nasty ear infection (sigh) so we’re on zithromax (and I caught the virus too)…seems to be going around our family.
Anyhow, I guess I don’t really expect much eating until she feels better. I really didn’t think a cold would last this long…

InactiveURGGHHH i feel for you. Matthew’s cold lasted for a while and we could not even get his tube to stay in him… but without it, i do not think we could keep him hydrated. Hope it goes away soon!! and you feel better soon too!
