InactiveMy OT gave me a feeding schedule that should be typical for an 11 to 13 month old. Noah doesnt eat this much or this often (willingly). Is this a typical schedule for any of you?
Typical times
7:00 am breakfast foods and cup of milk
9:30 mid-morning snack and cup of milk
noonish lunch and cup of milk
1:30 nap
3:00 snack and milk
5:30 dinner and cup of milk
8:00 bedtime snack
a total of 12 – 16 oz of solids per day and 16+ oz of milk per day.

InactiveOMG, Lisa! Is she serious! That’s a lot of food. We get no where near that amount, nor does Hailey eat that frequently. But that is almost the the exact kind of schedule my older daughter used to be on. How is Noah doing with his eating these days?

InactiveI think my other two boys probably ate that often, but then again, they both loved to eat! As for Noah, he is being his typical self. I cannot get a bottle in him without fighting him. I have even resorted to walking around the house again while trying to feed him the bottle. He wont suck on it, just lets it drip into his mouth and then he swallows. My arm feels like its about to fall off by the time I get 2 oz in him. I end up syringing, but that is nearly impossible anymore. As soon as he sees it, he starts to squirm, cry and hit it out of my hand. Distraction with a toy doesnt work either. I can maybe manage to get 2 oz into him with a cup, but it takes a lot of work. As for the solids, thank goodness he will eat a 4 oz jar at a sitting. He gets roughly 2 or maybe 3 jars per day. I add formula and butter to everything to try to make sure he gets close to 900 or so calories. He ends up burning everything off since he is always on the go. Thankfully he is showing more interest in trying to put tiny bits of food into his mouth. He might get 1/2 tsp of crumbs total into his mouth, so its not like I could leave him on his own to feed himself. I just wish I could get more liquids into him without him fighting me so much. I even added Hershey chocolate syrup to his formula yesterday, and he still refused it! Who doesnt like chocolate???!!!
I hope you are having better luck with Hailey. How are things going?

InactiveGlad to hear that he is at least taking the purees- that helps some. I feel your pain about the sleep feeding. I HATE IT!!! I feel like a prisoner in my house- can’t get out because of this feeding schedule. Hailey still doesn’t take solids. Won’t let us get near her with a spoon at all. Will take a tiny bite or two of puffs- certainly nothing that will count as calories. I’m hoping that it’s just teething and her current illness that has thrown things off and that things will turn around but I’m not feeling too optimistic these days. It’s depressing. Today our ped told me again that he’s concerned that Hailey may have autism. (sigh). I don’t really know how to respond to that- like I don’t have enough to be depressed about. He says that she’s just so high strung and stressed out and crying all the time. Today I wanted to dump her somewhere and walk away I was so frustrated with her. She’s going to be a year old and the end of the month and the last thing I feel like doing is throwing a party. As soon as everyone sings happy birthday she’ll burst into tears. Not really much of a celebration. Anyhow, I replied to your other post. We’ve tried polycose. I can mail you some if you want to try it. Let me know.

InactiveMatthew is younger… so i have no idea what is typical. But i can tell you that it seems like a lot to me. Funny how things are so different in different countries… here, i read about all the mothers giving the bottle and then an hour later the food etc etc. Well in Spain, babies get 4 meals a day – they get solids and they get the bottle at the same time… and funnily enough, the babies eat (vs here where babies don’t eat when all offered together???).
Sorry for rambling – with that i wanted ot say that try to be on a schedule that works for you!! There is no way that i could get Matthew to seat in his high chair more than 4 times a day and siince routine is so important for babies with aversions, that is the only place we have chosen to feed him. I think that you just have to figure out a schedule and try to follow it. If i try to give Matthew solids with no formula or water, he will take 1 ounce max… if i thne give him liquids, he will take mayeb another ounce… and since we need the formula, we just give it to him then.
It may be different because Matthew is tube fed… so that is just an opinion.
Lisa – i have to go to bed now… (matthew took out his tube yesterday and we had an awful night with puking and all and i have not had the heart to put it back yet…so it is going to be no sleeping again!!) but i have been reading a lot of the stuff at the other forum… there are a couple of posts called feeding therapy or somethign like that. One of them mentions a program that you can do remotely? Something where you would send a tape of your child eating and they help you?? God i hope i am not dreaming. I will try to look for it tomorrow.
Lori – really, your ped should not be worrying you like that! As i said before, i really think you would benefit from the other forum… there is a few people from Canada and there is a mom, who i know is going to St Josephs (where we are going), who has an 8month old daughter who just took a couple of bites after a few therapy sessions… so she may have some ideas???

InactiveBrian has been on the following schedule for a few months:
7am: 7 oz of 30cal formula
11am : 5-6 oz of solid then ( watching baby einstein)2oz of yogurt
3pm : 5-6 oz of solid then 2oz of yogurt
7pm : 5-6 oz of solid then 2oz of yogurt
11pm: 7 oz of solid 30cal formula
he has been feeding himself small pieces of soft table food (tofu, squash, noodle and cauliflower), I let him feed himself 10-15 minute before I feed him puree.
I make puree food for Brian, I have a kidco electronic food mill which my MIL ordered from one step ahead, it can make food really puree, I usually pan fry meat, vegi and tofy together and puree it.
His nutritionist told me that I can use 1 teaspoon of polycose into 1 tablespoon of puree food, she said that polycose is cal, it will not cause heavy load on kidney. I posted how to mix formula with polycose to make it 30cal formula before, she said it will have more free water by making it that way.

InactiveSharon – Sounds like Brian is doing pretty well with his solids. Does he take any milk during the day or with his afternoon meals? When you make his purees with the kidco, do you have to add much water? How do you keep the food from sticking to the sides?
Thais – Thanks. I’ll have to check out the other forum for the info on the feeding therapy tape. I’ve been reading lots of other posts on there as well. I hope tonight goes better for you and Matthew.

InactiveLisa – Brian doesn’t take milk during the day, he doesn’t know how to use new nipple and sippy cup, I gave him 2 oz of milk through open cup after solid a few month ago, he hated it and fought like crazy. Nutritionist from feeding clinic said to stop the milk, in order to prevent the aversion getting worse, she even said that some children take no milk at all and still grow well, that makes me feel better. Now I offer him gogurt when he is watch baby einstein.
When I make his puree, I add chicken broth (I make it myself, because can chicken broth has too much sodium). I grind a few second first, then stop and use spoon to bring those food down from the side, and grind more, repeat the process if needed.

Matthew is on a similar schedule! I guess i am not doing too bad then. Lisa – just fyi, we have the tube so it changes everything but this is what we do:
7am – feed him formula and yogurt and fruit. Usually takes about 1 ounce of yogurt or fruit and between 1 ounce and 2.5 ounces of formula (rest of the formula, up to 7 ounces, through the tube)
11am – meat or chicken with veggies (favorite food) and formula. He takes about 2 ounces of puree and little bit of formula (rest up to 7 ounces through the tube)
3pm – same as 11am
7pm – same
11pm – i tube feed him 3 ounces or so of formula and at 2 or 3am i do the same
We also do almost 30cal per ounce – i think it is more like 28cal per ounce.
On the puree, i add quite a bit of water – usually the one from boiling the potatoes.
Sharon – don’t remember if it was the ped in spain, but he said that if babies need 12-16 ounces of formula/milk to grow, then the yogurt equivalent would be around 1/2 of that… so it seems you are doing great!

InactiveSharon,
Since Matthew doesnt get any milk throughout the day, does he take any other liquids like water or juice? How many oz of liquid does your Ped or nutritionist want him to have to stay hydrated?
May 13, 2006 at 12:10 pm #7987Anonymous
InactiveThais – you are doing great with Matthew, so he is getting 35-37 oz of formula/solid every day, is he? If so, that is a very large amount. I wonder if you can give him 7oz of formula at 11pm, then you do not need to get up during the night and have a good night sleep, just a thought. Brian is using that old nipple for that two bottles, if that old nipple is broken, I don’t think he will take that much formula at all.
Lisa – I offer Brian water 3-4 times a day, and he drinks chicken broth from open cup when I feed him solid three times a day, I don’t calculate how much liquid he is getting, but he is getting liquid more frequent than I am
. As you mentioned before, solid food has liquid in it too. Brian does not like chocolate milk either, I offer him banana flavor milk sometimes and he takes a few sip, maybe Noah will like that. I never offer him juice before, will juice make reflux worse? What juice is best for a refluxer?May 13, 2006 at 1:45 pm #7989Anonymous
InactiveSharon — well, a lot of it is tube feedings… but we are not doing too bad. I read about babies being 100% tube fed and we are not there so i think that if we get lucky with the feeding therapy… hopefully we can teach him to sit still in his high chair??? who knows. He is getting around 35 ounces of 30cal formula + maybe 8 ounces of solids a day. I know, a ton of calories for a baby that weighs 18 pounds, but this is to keep him in his curve, between 10 adn 25% percentiles. He does not sleep much and he will not sit for more than 2 minutes. Still the GI says it is at the top of the range but within the range for babies like Matthew (he said those babies requiring that many calories are usually ery skinny!).
I wish we could give him the 7ounces together… but there are a couple of things:
1- if i feed him that much as a bolus when he is sleeping (ie horizontal) he will throw up most likely, and i do not want to risk the tube coming out of his mouth and having to put it back in
2- his body was used to having constant feeds at night, so he is not used yet to going long periods without some food… so if i do not give him something at around 2 or 3 am he is up at around 3.30am or 4am and he is crying… and he is hungry… but then if i give him the feeding that late, it means no breakfast at all… so for now, i am happy to continue the feedings (i have not yet slept more than 3 or 4 hours straight since Matthew was born… so i guess i am used to it!). Thanks for the suggestion though… we are hoping we will get there soon…..!!!

InactiveI don’t have much to add since Sydney (thank God) has always been a good eater. But, I was talking to my ped this week about the switch from formula to whole milk at one year. She stated that ideally they should have 16-24oz of milk per day. But, a lot of kids just won’t drink that much. As long as they are getting 4oz of milk and solids consist of mostly fruits and veggies (high water content) they would be fine. She also said to try and give water in a sippy if she would take it. Neither of us are big fans of juice, so it didn’t even come up.
It breaks my heart that you and your little ones have to fight this everyday. I hope things improve for you all.

InactiveThanks Thais. I do plan on visiting the other forum. I’ve been reading some posts, but hailey’s been sick for almost 2 weeks, and I was sick last week and have not had time to log in so I’ve only been able to view. Haven’t had much time.
Sharon, how did you get Brian to take the purees? Has he always liked them? Hailey hates pureed food and gets mad if she sees the spoon coming- sometimes she’ll cry, but mostly she just hits it away. I’m really disappointed that she won’t take any because it’s a good source of calories.

InactiveThais – It must be hard that you can not get enough sleep during the night, do you nap during the day when Matthew naps? Sleep is very important to me, so I nap with Brian when he takes two naps during the day. DH and I are both tall and skinny no matter how much we eat, so I was able to convince ped (during his 15 month check up)that Brian will be the same way. Some people just have very fast metabolism rate that they alway will be skinny.
Lori – After I made his puree food, he seems like it better, it tastes much better than jar food. ST said that low tone kids like stronger taste food.
