InactiveHi,
We have not been posting regularly but have been following many of the posting. Nathan is one year old last week. His Feeding is still a challenge but we are getting used to it. We used to sleep feed him a lot but slowly reducing them one by one. The last one we eliminated a month ago. At that point to increase the calorie intact, we gave him flax oil (1-2 teaspoon a day). His feeding became even more difficult and last 2 week he started to vomit very often. He also woke a lot during night. We were at a lost on why that was the case but going back to his feeding history, we saw the there was possibility flax oil was responsible for it. We stopped giving him flax oil immediatly and within a day he stop vomitting. So we are fairly sure he has some reaction to the flax oil.
Have any one have same experience with flax oil ? Now we are afraid to give him anything new, and struggling to try to increase his calorie intake needed for him.
Thanks
Fen Fen

I have no experience with this, i am sorry. But there are other ways that you can try and increase the calories. Have you heard of duocal or polycose. they are tasteless powders that you can add to anything, even water. You may want to talk to your ped about it.
Also, there is a mom on this board, Lori, who has a daughter that is sleep fed mostly and she has been looking for some success stories on how someone weaned the sleep feedings and the baby started eating… i don’t remember you responding to her… but i may be wrong. Anyway you can post about how it happened… also did your son take any solids??

InactiveFen Fen: it is great to hear from you again. Brian’s nutritionist said oil will make reflux worse, so maybe flax oil makes Nathan’s reflux worse and then he vomitted. As Thais mentioned, ploycose and duocal are great way to add cal. I remember you mentioned that you took Nathan to feeding clinic in NJ, how was it? Are you still going there?

InactiveFen Fen, I’m sorry that Nathan has been vomitting lately. I am very interested in how you managed to drop the sleep feedings. My daughter is almost a year and is sleep feeding and it’s wearing me down. (Thanks for asking Thais!) If you could please post about how you got him to switch I’d really appreciate it. I hope that Nathan is feeling better soon.

InactiveThank you for all your reply. Since I stopped the flax oil, Nathan has been doing much better. I still have to somehow increase his calorie to replace the flax oil. Thank you for the tip on duocal or polycose. I will ask his Feeding docter when we visit him. My mother in law also mentioned to me to use rice milk (instead of water) to mix his Neocate. Have anyone try that ?
Sharon, yes we still visit St Joseph Feeding Center in NJ. I find them very helpful. I think they have dealt a lot with infant with feeding issues and can give us a lot of useful method to train Nathan. I still visit them once every 4-6 weeks.
Lori, I can sympthized with the sleep feeding. My husband and I literraly lost 10% of our weight due to the stress. Our process of eliminating the sleep feeding was very slow and literally took from last October till April. What we did was we made one of the day sleep feeding into awake feeding, wait till we got to the same calorie level, then started with the next one. We tried a lot of things to get him to eat awake. We tried syringe and he took it ok, but obviously it is very inconvienient. Then we found a disposable sippy cup we get from Wallmart. I think people call it “toss and go” cup. It has a somewhat flexible cover and so if he did not suck on it, we just squeeze the cover to get Neocate into him. He usually swallow if he squeeze Neocate in his mouth. We are still doing it this way, even sometimes in restaurant. Imagine if I use syringe in restaurant
, we will be the main attraction there. He is eating solid ok, so that helps. We focus a lot on high calorie solid such as chicken in gravy, sweat potato, etc.Fen Fen

Thank you… where are you? We are going to St Josephs tomorrow for our evaluation. We have heard wonderful things about them so we are very very excited… i am hoping they get us into their day program (would be a commute for us from the city/westchester) but we just need to give Matthew a little boost!

InactiveThais,
We are in Dutchess county area so it is quite a drive for us also (90 miles). Good luck with your visit and let us know how it goes. I really hope Matthew will become better soon.

InactiveKristen,
We live in the same area. We have seen a couple of local Feeding/Speech Therapist and they both said there are a lots of infant in this area with reflux/feeding issues. I guess we are both the lucky ones.

InactiveFen Fen,
Have you gone to communication disorders through Saint Francis Hospital?
I can’t remember if you said you’ve been to a GI,, I think you did, if so, who do you see? I wasn’t crazy about who I saw. What ped do you use?

InactiveKristen,
We never see a local GI. We saw one in Weschester but not too crazy with her either. We then went to the Jersey Feeding Center.

InactiveFen Fen,
We saw Dr. Cukaj. She’s out of Westchester but goes to Vassar once a week. Again, not crazy about her.
Did you say the Jersey Feeding Center is a few hours away? Do you know if they have a website?
