InactiveMy 18-month-old son is “neurologicall normal” and was eating fine. However, an x-ray, ph probe, and biopsy revealed that he had acid reflux, inflamed esophagus, and sliding hiatal hernia. So, after trying several medications, we opted for a full-wrap fundo (April 28). While hospitalized, Ethan contracted both c diff and rotavirus. He was given flagyl for the c diff, which made him very very sick. So, they switched him to riflaximin and that seemed to clear up the c diff. He went off the riflaximin on Sunday. However, now he seems to have some new/strange reaction to milk (cow’s milk, rice milk, soy milk), apple juice, and basically any fluid other than water. The reaction is lethargy, dry heaving, and eventual sleep for 1-2 hours.
Now, this is odd because he is a very high energy boy that used to LOVE both milk (all kinds) and apple juice.
I am not sure if this is a common thing to occur after fundos?
Also, I am interested in any tips on foods for him – he is dying to eat food with us and getting quite angry about the mush (food processed meals) that I put before him at mealtime.
Any tips, advice, etc from someone with a similar situation is most appreciated!
Thanks so much!

InactiveHi and welcome!
Matthew is younger and so i have no clue about foods for an 18month old. There are only a couple of people here whose babies have had fundos (Christine may be away and Janice does not log in too often…). I am going to suggest another forum for you – this one is great believe me but the other one has a lot of users with fundo babies and i think that it will be best for your questions re fundos… although we would love to have you participate this one too!
http://www.parent-2-parent.com/forum
there is a special folder for fundos
good luck!

InactiveThanks so much for the tip. I have just posted a message on that board in the “fundo issues” forum.
Thanks again!

InactiveHi there,
Good luck to you. I hope that you get the answers you need for your son. I’m just curious why they suspected reflux in the first place- did he have reflux all along or did he just develop it later. Welcome.

InactiveFrom birth to recently (this week!), he would only sleep for 1-2 hours at a time – often at night he would wake up SCREAMING in pain every 1-2 hours – sometimes for up to three hour stints – totally inconsoable. It was awful. Finally at 12 months of age, our pediatrician said that maybe it was acid reflux. He did spit up quite a bit as an infant but as a toddler his main symptom was that he wouldn’t eat hardly anything – after OT and about a month of really chowing down, he stopped eating again. On a few occasions he threw up right after a meal and that was pretty bad – that started happening just a few weeks before his surgery. Our GI doctor was shocked when his ph probe results showed fairly bad reflux and even more shocked when the biopsy showed an inflamed esophagus because his endoscopy showed nothing….even though an xray had showed inflamed esophagus, sliding hiatal hernia AND reflux.
Anyway, now my only concern is the retching after ingesting any form of milk (cow’s, rice, soy, etc). Actually, apple juice (diluted) also gives him the retches. Otherwise, though, he does fine on just about any mushed up food.

Inactiveok, i just got a message from a posting on a totally different board (the parent to parent one – thanks for the rec) that this other kid had the same issue with soy and milk and etc products – right after battling c diff for TEN MONTHS – that kid couldn’t tolerate soy, milk, etc for three years – so….i think that must be the culprit for the intolerance issue…thanks again for listening to my vents!! 🙂
