InactiveWe’ve been going really slowly on solids with Ian and he’s been on squash for over 3 weeks now. After oatmeal trial and failure, he seemed to have issues on squash that he didn’t have before. However, symptoms went away. He’s always just ate a tiny bit but today when he finished a whole jar (first time -2 oz) he had what looked like some hives after. Now the caveat is that he also was drinking pedialyte (apple) from a sippy cup and because he’s learning, pedialyte went everywhere on his face along with the cup hitting his face. Ian’s got super sensitive skin (very white/pale and get’s blotchy). Is it possible just irritation from surface? It did have a little bump here and there. But went away inside of 5-10 min. If it doesn’t come back – are we ok?
I didn’t think to look at his body until it half went away. So tough to tell if he had anything there.
Thanks.

InactiveI would guess that it could be from the apple Pedialyte – Marisa
sometimes gets some bumps if I don’t clean her face off quickly enough
after eating – she’s a messy eater. Maybe try again tomrorow and see if
it happens again and check his body too?How is he feeling?

InactiveHe’s pretty fussy today as it goes on. These little red bloches kind of freaked me out but read on Dr. Sears that hives are rarely on the face. Wish I caught the body too! If it was food related it wouldn’t go away that fast, would it?
Was giving him Elecare today because he didn’t gain any weight again but then decided to switch to pedialyte. He’s been super gunky. I didn’t know that was typical of endos. But now I’m afraid to switch to anything-eek! If it’s not one thing, it’s another.
How’s our happy Marisa??

InactiveIf it went away that fast, I doubt that it was food related. Kaelyn’s hives tended to linger for a while.

InactiveMaybe the fussiness is from being hungry and still tired and sore from
yesterday though? Have you given any Tylenol or Motrin? I wouldn’t
think a food reaction would go away so quickly but hard to say – sounds
more like from the Pedialyte on his face though. Is he sleeping?Marisa is good. We’re exhausted though – last few mornings she’s waking
at 4am. Not crying for us or hungry or anything – we just hear her on
monitor talking and rolling and playing and once in a while whimpering
or laughing. This morning she did it from 4-5 and then dozed until 5:30
and then dozed again from 5:45-6:30. Of course i couldn’t fall back
asleep – I’m a light sleeper. We think it’s related to her starting to
pull up and also teething – who knows. She totally hates squash though – tried the other day. Trying chicken
(I made chicken soup and am blending some up now) tomorrow.May 24, 2006 at 4:21 pm #8571Anonymous
InactiveDoes not sound like hives – my husband gets them and trust me, if he had gotten them you would have known to look at his body too. Karen is right probably – Matthew has sensitive skin adn he gets rashes from all food or liquids touching it. He also gets rashes all over his body from heat adn sweating.
I am sorry he has not gained any weight – he was so big and chubby when he was here… hopefully he will be back to eating soon adn this is just a phase! Hang in there

InactiveJust remembered that Marisa got what looked like hives once on her
chest and back and groin. I got worried it was from bananas but turned
out was from new bath soap and warm bath – they went away within 10-15
minutes and I threw out the soap!I bet Ian will start gaining weight once the endo is done and once he
can up his solids (which I know he loves). If sucrose is not an issue
can you try the vanilla flavored Elecare?May 24, 2006 at 5:31 pm #8575Anonymous
InactiveThanks everyone-good to know.
Karen-did she get the hives right after the soap or later? This was right after and did go away within 10-15 min as well. But it was mostly blotches with 2 bumps-only one looked like a real hive. Sorry to hear M’s not sleeping great. Ian always has wake ups when he learns a new skill so I”ll bet your right. His first nap today was great 2 hours. Second one-he woke himself up coughing. But that’s definitely endo related. I think I will try Motrin. Also, we have the vanilla and add a little to every bottle but doesnt make much difference really. I’m beginning to think teething is majorly related to sucking distaste and that he associates it with pain. On a good note-he took 2 oz from a sippy cup today by himself until he started to lose control and couldn’t get it back in his mouth.
Thais-hope Matthew’s feeling a little better. I read your post the other day and was thinking about you.

InactiveIt was basically right after. I had taken her out of the bath and
hadn’t noticed anything but then we were in the living room and she was
playing naked on her towel (one of her favorite things to do) and I
noticed the hives then. She’s still napping really well and sleeping well most of the night –
it’s just the early morning thing. Really can’t complain as she’s still
such a good sleeper and she’s not actually waking us up – I’m just such
a light sleeper…Great with the sippy!
Yes Thais – and was nice to run into you the other day too. How are things?

InactiveAlso, wouldn’t it be unlikely for it now after weeks start this kind of reaction? Hives are pretty serious aren’t they? You’d think that would be immediate…Of course, what do I know?

InactiveMattthew is Matthew and we take one day at a time. Now trying to arrange something with the cardiologist – our ped is trying to get the cardiologist to see us within a week max… so we are still waiting for that one. Feeding is fine – he has refused anything by mouth now for the last 24 hours but again, Matthew is Matthew…
On a good note – he took a couple of small steps today and managed to keep his balance for another 20seconds after that… so he is trying so hard to walk! Don’t know how we are going to get him to crawl ever but hey. Oh and as of today he has the 2 teeth at the top out… so so many things.
Karen – yes what a coincidence! We closed on our house today YEAH!!!!! So now we want to move mid june so we have so much work to do and so i will be going to Janovic probably in the next couple of days… will email you and we can meet up!

InactiveThat’s GREAT with Matthew taking steps and getting more teeth! We still
have the toothless wonder here. Definitely email me and we’ll meet up –
would love to. Congrats on the house! And yes, Tracy – I think something like hives would be a more immediate
reaction. I’d give the squash again tomorrow and see how it goes.May 24, 2006 at 9:17 pm #8584Anonymous
InactiveTracy, Hailey has also had this issue, but hers are on the body, and they are there for hours. Definitely look like hives, on her back and chest, but she is a very sweaty baby, so I wonder if it could be from that. Hailey also gets the irritation on the face from not wiping properly. Hope he is back to himself soon.
Thais, that’s great about Matthew walking!!! Sounds like he’ll skip crawling all together… I’ve heard that reflux really improves when they’re upright for most babes. Also wanted to tell you something I just remembered- When my older daughter was a month old our ped for some reason wanted her to have her heart checked. Can’t remember why anymore, but turned up to have a small hole (VSD) that never would have been found otherwise. It ended up closing on it’s own. Anyhow, I was so frantic when the doctor told me about it, but then he told me that nowadays with all of the frequent ultrasounds that are being done during pregnancy, it’s VERY rare for any major problems to be found after a baby is born that were not diagnosed before. He said that most things found after birth are anomalies or minor. I hope that this reassures you somewhat.

InactiveThank you Lori!! I just keep thinking that he has been checked by a ton of people and hopefully it is nothing major. We shall know soon. Our ped is just great at pushing other people around (he gets us appointments really quickly!) and we love that – at least we will know.
I know he is going to skip crawling… but they will force him to do some exercises i guess… although he still does not have sufficient balance… i guess that just comes with time?? one more thing he did tonight… he was sitting in the crib and … he pulled himself up to standing!! So proud of my little non-eater…
How is Hailey?? Matthew gets all types of rashes from sweating… so hopefully that is what is going on with Hailey too! Plus i get all types of rashes from eating things like mustard for example?? Horrible rashes on my face and neck, but not really hives. And i get allergies all over my hands caused from sun, spring, who knows. Right now, 2 of my fingers look like they are going to fall off… i know that these are just in the spring from teh heat so i would not be surprised if Matthew has those

InactiveThat’s great Thais!! It’s so amazing when they accomplish new things.
As for Hailey, to quote you, Hailey is Hailey! We just saw the nephrologist today and she’s not sure whether or not she wants to do the ultrasound. She says that since she’s never had a kidney issue and since I had NINE ultrasounds during my pregnancy- one of which was 3 days after my due date, two days before Hailey was born- that we know she had two functioning kidneys at birth. She said she’ll discuss it with the ped, but that she doesn’t like to do testing for no reason. We’re going to find out next week. Otherwise, she’s still her usual self- but certainly a lot more active (which is nice, but scary… much harder to keep the pounds on now!). Thanks for asking.
