InactiveSebastian is now six months old and starting to have problems again. The last month was great. He did not have any noticeable reflux episodes. He stated taking two couple hour naps a day. (was at 5 or 6 half hour naps) He was only waking up once a night for a bottle and actually slept though the night a couple of times!
I started him on solids. I was introducing a new food a week and he was doing great. The only problem he had was a little constipation which was solved by balancing the right foods. He was doing so well I decided to try to cut back on his meds. The ped. said he was on a low enough dose of Reglan that I did not have to wean him off I could just stop it and would know fairly quickly if he needed it or not. I did not like that idea so I decided to wean VERY slowly over a month. He was on .5 ml twice a day so I went to .4.
I was also still adding a new food a week. I tried peas and he got fussy and gassy and then on the third day mucusy poops. I stopped the peas and gave him a week break. I then tried blueberries. I was trying them at the same time as the med. reduction. (in hindsight not a very good idea) The first day he spit up constantly. He only ate a couple bites of the blueberries so I attributed it to the meds. The next day he was really fussy. He was only taking one hour naps and would wake up screaming. He was up twice at night and was just not his normal happy self during the day. He was also VERY gassy.
I upped his Reglan back to .5 and gave him a little extra Zantac. (I had also lowered that a little bit) On Sunday he had a horrible day. He screamed for an hour straight. He would not take a bottle and I had to use the water trick (switching back and forth from a water bottle and formula bottle until he would drink the formula) which we used to have to do for almost every bottle, but have not done in well over a month.
I assumed that the meds. just had to kick back in and stupidly kept feeding him the blueberries. He only had a few bites every day. The most was Sunday when he at about six bites. This morning he woke up with his usually poopy diaper and then a few hours latter he went again and it was almost all mucus. I have not seen one that bad since before the Nurtamigen.
I am definitely not going to bother messing with the meds at this point, but I am not sure what to do about solids. Right now he is eating carrots, squash, bananas, pears, and oatmeal with out any problems. Should I keep trying to introduce new foods or just stick with the ones that are working for a while. I seems strange that he had not problems and now two foods in a row have upset him.
Sorry that this is so long, it is just really upsetting when you have setbacks. I am sure you ALL can relate.

InactiveI can definitely relate and am sorry to hear that Sebastian is having a
setback. I hope the meds start to help again and if it were me, I’d
stick with only safe foods for maybe 2 weeks before introducing
anything new. At his age, even having 5 foods he can eat without a
problem is great! Hope things settle down soon.June 12, 2006 at 1:23 pm #9618Anonymous
InactiveI agree with Karen. At 7 months Myles was only eating five foods (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, pears and apples), and even now at 9 months I’ve only added spinach, peas, and blueberries.
I’d get him back on his regular dose of Zantac for at least two weeks and stay with the five foods until you know the Zantac is doing it’s job again.
From reading here these lasts 5 months, I think 6 months is probably young to outgrow reflux and be off meds.
I hope Sebastian is feeling better very soon.

InactiveI would stick to what he’s eating and doing well with, Aidan doesn’t eat that much baby food, My older son did not even have cereal until he was 6 months and that was the only thing he ate til 7 months (he was bf’d)I’m not really worried about what/how much Aidan eats at this poin, generally every veggie, avacado, haven’t found a fruit he can tolerate yet, think he’s doing ok with blueberries, the food is really just a way of teaching them to eat (chew kind of) and getting their systems used to it. 6 years ago when my older son was born, 6 months was when you started cereal, not baby food!!! When our doc said at 4 months, yep go ahead I looked at her like she was an alien!!
