InactiveI have a 7 week old little girl. She is bottlefed. We went to the emergency room this weekend b/c she began to refuse her bottle, and if she drank any she only drank like 2-3 oz. She was drinking 4-5. The doctor said it might be gas so he suggested gas drops and a bottle with a liner. We tried this and her gas has improved, however, she is still crying during her bottles. We took her back to the doctor on monday and she said she might have reflux, so she gave all of these little things to do like feed her 2 oz every couple of hours and keeping her upright after feedings and while she sleeps, however, I’m not seeing much improvement. She seems so tired all the time, whereas before she was so energetic. She is still a happy baby for the most part, but I’m just scared. I’m a new mom and I just want a healthy baby. Any advice?
Thanks!
sincerely,
Amanda

InactiveHi and welcome.
It might be a good idea to take her to a pediatric GI, or at least to another pediatrician. If she does have reflux she will likely need to be on medication. My children’s reflux didn’t get real bad until they were 10 weeks old, and then it took me another 4 – 5 weeks to figure out what was wrong. By then things were very bad. It probably wouldn’t have gotten as bad as it did if I had them on medication earlier.
Here’s Laura’s intro information. It’s long so you may want to bookmark it so you can read when you have time. https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;PN=1&TPN=1
Also, here is a website with current research information on reflux and meds for reflux. You may want to print some of their information to have on hand when you go to the doctor. Many doctors are not up on the current research on PPI dosing for infants and they prescribe doses which are too low. http://www.marci-kids.com/
The things your doctor suggested are helpful, but if she isn’t improving and continues to cry or refuse feedings, she will probably need medication.
Good luck. Glad you found us.

InactiveMy little guy was diagnosed as having silent reflux at about 4 weeks (maybe 6?) he’s been on 30 mg of prevacid since he was 2 months old (first zantac then on to 15 mg of prevacid)…..Give what the ped said a try for a few more days, then I’d take her back and explain that it’s not working.I’d ask the Dr. why he/she didn’t give her any medication…if the dr says they don’t medicate babies that young..find another dr. (I was lucky with the doc we have she believes that if a baby is crying all the time and there’s a med that can fix it, then she’ll prescribe it)

InactiveWelcome! I know how frustrated you must feel being a first time mother! The 7 week mark was horrible for us. DD didn’t get attention because she had silent reflux and wasn’t spitting up all over the place. Your ped can prescribe meds for her. We started on zantac, but I wasn’t told how to properly administer it. Then we went to prevacid which is a ppi and turns off the pumps. Which helps a bunch since our kiddos are getting a “double burn” in the esophogus.
We ended up in the hospital, they did an upper gi and found reflux and send us home with a sling a wedge and had her sleep on her belly. Things got alot better then and after 2 weeks when the medicine finally kicked in. Also, we learned to give the medicine on an emtpy stomach and wait 30 mins before feeding her a full meal. While we were waiting for the meds, we used mylanta cherry supreme before bottles, I think .5 to 1 tsp at that point. If you use too much it gives them loose stools. I hope she feels better soon! You will find so much support and information on this site. Glad you found us!

InactiveMy first thought would be to switch formulas. I believe that babies know what they can and can’t digest properly. I would try another formula. It may not be reflux. And if soy formula doesn’t do the trick. Try Allumentium or nutremengin? (man, I have no idea how to spell them, but there all over this site). Also do a search for MSPI on the site – Milk Soy Protein Intollerance and that may help you.

InactiveMy son did the same thing at about 4 weeks. He was diagnosed with
reflux and MSPI. Of course our doctor gave us the same advice
along with Zantac and switching formulas. The soy formula worked
for a couple of days and then got worse. The ped then started
Zach on Alimentum and Prevacid and we had a different baby.
Within three days his gas improved and he started sleeping better so
obviously the Alimentum kicked in that fast. It took about 10 or
11 days for the Prevacid to start working but he seemed much more
comfortable once the formula was switched. Hope this helps! -
