InactiveDoes anyone know if there is such a thing as low cal baby formula? Connor is back to gaining 2 ounces a day, which is way too much. I get make him eat less because he will cry and scream. I don’t really think he’s taking too much in though, he will eat 4-6 ounces, with 5 being the norm about 6 times a day. Sometimes he only eats 5 times. He’s 5 months old and I know at his 4 month check the form said he should be eating less than 32 ounces a day, which he is. I know the rice in the bottle doesn’t help, but he needs it. Any suggestions?

InactiveThat rice cereal in the bottle must be some magical stuff. Abigail gained a whole pound in the last 2 weeks. I thought her carseat carrier was getting heavier
. It could be that he is just going through a growth spurt and the weight gain will level off again, especially as he becomes more active, which I am sure he is being 5 months old. I kind of gave up on the so-called “amount” of formula a baby “should” be taking each day as I am sure it varies so much from child to child. Unfortunately, our sweetie has decided that she wants to eat around 1:30/2:00 in the morning again the last 2 nights (woke up hysterically crying and hard to get settled back down – this is how I feel today after being up during the night
I had gotten so used to sleeping good at night but we must be having a little setback. The doctor figures it is just a growth spurt so we will have to see what happens. Her ears, lungs, throat and tummy all sounded good so it must just be growing pains. I have thought about trialing a little higher amount of Zegerid in the evening just in case it could be related to reflux. Gotta keep the fingers crossed for tonight.I really have never heard of any lower calorie formula, I suppose the only way would be to put in more water (if you use powder) but I don’t think that would be a good idea either. Hope someone else has some ideas

InactiveHave you tried thickening with Simply Thick instead of rice?

InactiveThanks Robin,
I’m just so concerned because he’s 14lbs 6.9 oz at 5 months. I know that’s not bad for a 5 month old, but he is a 10 week preemie. The last time this happened the ped said he shouldn’t be gaining more than an ounce a day. I understand he might be going through a growth spurt, but he’s such a meatball. Both my husband and I are overweight and don’t want our little guy to start off that way. I don’t know, maybe I’m over reacting.

InactiveMyles was over 15 lbs at 4 months. My husband and I are both heavy, so I was concerned, too. Now, he’s 9 months old and only 20lbs, 4 ounces….45th percentile! So, I wouldn’t worry too much at this point. All three of my kids were at their chubbiest between 4 – 6 months and. Liza was a meatball, too…(over 15 lbs at 4 months) and she is very thin now. Ellie, my most likely to become chubby child, was also a chubby baby from about 4 -6 months, but now is average in height and weight.
I’d only be concerned if he is a comfort eater. Babies are born with a natural ability to know when they are full and stop eating. They rarely over-eat to the point of becoming over-weight unless they are serious comfort eaters. Is he a serious comfort eater?? If not, I wouldn’t worry about right now. I’ve done lots of reading about what to do and not do to prevent obesity in my own children. In infancy the most important thing is to let the baby determine when and how much to eat.
You could maybe try gradually reducing the amt of cereal in his bottle. I started doing that with Myles (not because of his weight) but because he has low motility and all the bulk is too much for his bowels). Myles adjusted gradually to thinner and thinner milk and now I only thicken one bottle (his bedtime bottle) per day. Does he need the cereal to keep it down, or because he chokes?
Do you weigh your little “meatball” and his sister at home?
Or do you have a doctor’s appointment recently? I’m asking because I used to weigh my kids all the time, worried they were getting fat, or sometimes too skinny. I’ve learned to put the scale away and just rely on check ups and very occassional weigh-ins at home. Otherwise, I just give myself one more thing to worry myself sick about. Inactivemy oldest son weighed 15 lbs at 2 1/2 months old. he went on to be an extremely thin child (slims were too big) and he was always complaining about how skinny he was.
i wouldn’t even consider giving a baby that age a low cal formula. he probably won’t need thickened bottles when he starts on solids, so that should eliminate that problem.

InactiveKaren- Where can I get simply thick? Is it by prescription only?
Christine- I don’t see Connor as a comfort eater at all. If he’s not hungry he WILL NOT eat. He now eats every 4-5 hours, going up to 12 hours at night. I really don’t think the amount he eats is a problem, just the fact that he is on high cal formula with rice cereal. I’m going to talk to the ped about putting him on regular formula, since he’s concerned about his weight I don’t think that will be a problem. The neonatologist wanted the twins on the high cal stuff till they were at least 6 months…my daughter definately needs it, but not my son. The only thing that kind of stinks about it is right now my insurance pays 100% for our formula, I don’t think they will if he goes to regular formula.
Does anyone know if you can add rice cereal to Enfamil AR? I have a script for that too and have TONS of it, but it’s too thin for them. If I can add just a bit of rice to it it would be perfect cause it’s a lower cal formula and insurance will still pay for it.

InactiveHi Kristen,
I would not add cereal to the Enfamil AR. I’ve heard that it is very binding to begin with and adding cereal might cause severe constipation.
Putting him on regular 20 cal formula sounds like a good idea, as long as you get the o.k. from his doctor first. Six months is probably the typical time they put preemies on high cal formula but they may not all need to be on it that long. Every baby is different. I think it is wise of you to look into this now.

You may be able to return the Enfamil AR if you bought it a retail store if it is not outdated and you are just exchaning it for another type of formula. I’ve done that a number of times when having to switch formulas with my babies.
