Does anybody have one of these type of seats? We are needing a new seat for Kayleigh as hers doesn’t fit her anymore even though it is supposedly designed to do so until 40lbs. She’s only 32. We recently had another inspection done and all the techs came over and tried there best to get the straps longer. Basically they can’t so if I want to quit leaving ugly red marks on her legs if the aren’t pulled just perfect then she needs a new seat. I saw this one at Toys R Us and it is supposed to harness to 65lbs then you can use it as a booster. Just wondering if anybody has it or has heard anything good/bad about it. Thanks!
July 8, 2007 at 9:57 am #38821hellbenntKeymasterI just read about this on another site- either the BBB board or TBW…
I even clicked the link & saw the sliding harness…I would look at the BBB…this is what I found for you- the key point being that you need headrests in the car for the Apex: 1) Yeah, as long as you have head rests in both cars, the Apex is great. Also, I know it’s not much bigger than the MA, but take a look at the Triumph Advance…it’s much wider and deeper and comfier than the MA and doesn’t require headrests. The Radian is also rather taller than the MA, but sometimes fits poorly in some cars and isn’t that comfy for older kids (gee, sounds so bad when I put it that way… we actually really like ours, lol).2) Maybe a Radian 65 or (if they have headrests in the back seat of the car) Apex 65. The new Evenflo Triumph Advance might work too, or the Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe. All of these seats have top slots that are about the same as the Marathon (17 inches or so). The Apex is a combination seat (harness to booster), the others are convertible seats (rear facing to forward facing). HTH.July 8, 2007 at 3:01 pm #38845AnonymousInactiveThank you very much! I searched prior to posting but didn’t come up with anything like you did. You are amazing Laura I will probably just save up for a Britax Regent or Marathon. Thanks again

If you are planning on harnessing for a long time to come, then you probably want to just go with a Regent. If you are only planning on harnessing until she starts school, then probably the Apex65 or Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe (check out babycenter.com they had them on sale for $99) would probably be your best bets.
July 12, 2007 at 5:40 pm #39085AnonymousInactiveI’m curious…why do you need headrests for the Apex 65? I’m using a Britax seats for my three (2 wizards and a bodyguard booster) and I’ve removed the headrests from the car because the seats seem to fit better without them? Should I put them back in?
July 12, 2007 at 11:29 pm #39112AnonymousInactiveThanks Mel! I’m saving my pennies and going for a Britax. She needs to be harnessed for awhile since she tends to have more seizures while in the car so I’m not taking chances. I wish I had done my homework prior to the seat we have now. Oh well live and learn.
Christine~ I’m was curious about that also as I’ve removed the headrest where her seat is now because it fits beter. Nobody’s ever said anything….. I have her seat checked twice a year at our local car seat clinic.
July 18, 2007 at 4:33 pm #39477AnonymousInactiveThe Apex65’s “headrest” is only a positioning device according to the instruction manual. It is not a load rated portion of the carseat, and therefore can’t withstand the forces of a crash. This has also been confirmed with reps at Dorel/Cosco in several instances.
So…in other words…in a crash if you were using the Apex65 and, if your kid’s head is taller than the vehicle seatback (or headrest if it’s not raised up), then the headrest on the Apex65 would just flop back and forth with the crash and would not help prevent whiplash.
Removing the headrests to get an optimal installation of a typical carseat in most situations is A-OK…this one just happens to be an oddball.

July 18, 2007 at 6:02 pm #39479AnonymousInactiveThanks, Mel. That helps. Sheesh! Why does this whole carseat thing have to be so complicated?
July 19, 2007 at 8:54 am #39505AnonymousInactiveIt’s funny, b/c I often wonder if it really is complicated, or if I’m just making it complicated!! My friends just seem to go to the store and without much thought, pick a seat and get it installed. They don’t seem to care much about which one it is, and tend to get what’s installed. My friend thinks I’m crazy for having bought the Parkway for Sarah. She says that boosters are just for positioning anyway and that they won’t give side impact protection like they claim.
