Just wanted to pass this along to anybody w/ food sensitive babies/toddlers/kiddos. And I apoligize in advance if this is well-known info here on the forum…
The flu shot contains egg.Dh suspected this (he’s in medical sales & sells flu shots) but this was confirmed when Evan’s ped GI said no flu shot for him or me.September 14, 2008 at 11:31 pm #56616AnonymousInactiveAs far as I know, the flu shot also still contains thimerosal.
September 15, 2008 at 11:51 am #56630AnonymousInactiveThe mist version (through teh nose) does not contain thimerosal (i read it on the TACA website), but it still has eggs.
September 15, 2008 at 12:07 pm #56636AnonymousInactiveDoesn’t the MMR have egg also? Where did I hear that?
September 15, 2008 at 12:15 pm #56637AnonymousInactiveHere’s a couple links~
Thimerosal in vaccines: http://www.fda.gov/CBER/vaccine/thimerosal.htm#t1Ingredients in all vaccines: http://www.generationrescue.org/pdf/substances.pdf

September 15, 2008 at 1:19 pm #56639AnonymousInactiveugg scary. my ob doctor wants me to get the flu shot soon.. ( i am pregnant).. and is pretty much requiring all pregnant moms to get it done during the winter!! ugh.
September 15, 2008 at 2:07 pm #56640AnonymousInactiveCooper has an egg allergy and he got his flu shot last year without any incident and we just had his MMR last month and he didn’t react to it either. The only shot he has reacted to is the chicken pox vac. I haven’t looked yet, but I think it has egg as well. Just wanted to share from a mom with a child with an egg allergy. My peds son has an egg allergy as well and he hasn’t reacted to any of the shots with egg either. I think it depends on “how severe” the allergy is. As long as it isn’t an anaphlyatic reaction they usually will give it and then keep you in the office for 30-45 min after to observe. My allergist even said they would do a skin prick of the vacs to check for reactions before giving the shots if it would make us feel better. HTH.
September 15, 2008 at 2:16 pm #56641AnonymousInactiveI apologize… I was NOT trying to start a debate re: vaccinations as I know that can be a touchy subject nor was I trying to scare anybody.
We are firm believers in vaccinations in our house (as well as the flu shot) & we would have proceeded as usual had our ped GI not told us otherwise.Beth- I’m glad that Cooper hasn’t had any reactions to them (besides chicken pox vac).September 15, 2008 at 3:07 pm #56643AnonymousInactiveSorry – I wan’t trying to start a debate either! It’s just a touchy subject for me since Ben and Paige are both vaccine injured. Ironically, my husband and I make a living selling medications and vaccines as well. I just wish they were made safer, without any potentially damaging heavy metals in them. Of course nobody wants to get, or have their child get, a vaccine preventable illness.MFPIx22008-09-15 15:08:25
September 15, 2008 at 3:17 pm #56645AnonymousInactiveThis is a touchy topic for us as well. Kendra went down hill fast after getting her 6 months shots. With all we have gone thorugh, I wish i could go back to that time and undo it . I definatelly would not want any parent and child to go thorugh that either.
Every child is different, some do really well and some don’t. In my opinion the key is educate ourselves about vaccines, so we can make the best decision for our child. I educated myself a bit too late.kendramom2008-09-15 15:20:03
September 15, 2008 at 3:30 pm #56647AnonymousInactiveOh I hear you Leo, hindsight is 20/20. The worst one for Paige was the chicken pox at 12 months (we elected to not give her the MMR). And for Ben it was the DTaP and the MMR. We’ve been told by our ped GI to not vaccinate either of them again, ever.
If there was only some way we could push for testing to help determine which children are at risk for vaccine injury, and which aren’t. Because, as I’m sure you would agree, I wouldn’t want anyone else to join this “club”. But like you say, most children are fine with vaccinations. We just need to be able to identify the smaller subset of susceptible kids early enough to prevent them from being injured. And in the meantime, clean up the vaccines to remove the most potentially harmful ingredients.
September 15, 2008 at 3:55 pm #56648AnonymousInactiveErin,
I am not trying to “fuss” b/c you aren’t getting the flu shot… I really didn’t want to have Cooper get it last year and I personally have never had the flu shot, even when I was preggo. I avoid shots for myself is at all possible, I hate needles. I just wanted to let all those moms know that even with egg allergies you can still get the shots without a reaction b/c of the egg. I often talk with Sheri about this and her input is always so helpful b/c she is both a mom and a medical professional. I am lucky that I can’t remember every having the flu but I also don’t get sick often, not even a cold. I am very lucky in this regard. But others aren’t so lucky. I will say that if the nasal vac is an option, I “think” this one is safer than the actual shot. Sheri – I am right about that?
September 15, 2008 at 4:04 pm #56650AnonymousInactivewe have never had any problems with vaccines, but i find it frustrating that there is so much controversy over whether or not the ingredients are safe. i thought thimerosol had been removed from all vaccines—-but what i don’t understand, is this—if the ingredient is under that much debate as to it’s safety, why not just remove it. i am sure there has got to be something else that could do it’s job that is not so questionable.
my first husband would not let me have my oldest son vaccinated, so it was not until after we split up that leif started his shots—pretty close to 2 years old. i have since heard that it is actually better to start their shots later if you can.i can’t decide what i think about flu shots. the only time kevin got a flu shot—-he got the flu. they said it must have been a different strain. however, one of my good friends got the flu last year and she ended up with one of the rare complications of it—-a complication that most often kills flu patients. she just happened to be at the right place at the right time (the emergency room) her husband had taken her in and then gone home to be with the kids, then he got a call from the hospital that his wife was crashing. it had gone to her heart. she has been in and out of the hospital a number of times since. she still has pericarditis and just seems to hold steady. i think she reached a certain level of improvement and just maintains there without any further improvement. i don’t know what they actually expect her future prognosis to be. however, she looks great and our kids are on the same soccer team and she has been out to the games.we also had a man in our town get west nile virus—i hear that most people don’t get very sick with it—but it just ravaged his health. it caused so many other illnessess. i can’t even remember all of them that his wife told me. i think there was parkinsons, polio, bell’s palsey and 6 or 7 other diseases connected to it. he appears to have made a full recovery, but i don’t know how long it took and i have never asked his wife if there were any residual effects.life can be scary sometimes.kevieb2008-09-15 16:10:55
September 15, 2008 at 4:53 pm #56652AnonymousInactiveI agree with you wholeheartedly Christine. There’s not doubt that vaccines can and do save lives. But lets clean them up. If there are ingredients that can harm a subset of kids/people getting them, then that’s not a good trade off either. Let’s get them cleaned up. I know some people are treating parents who don’t vaccinate or have chosen to stop vaccinating like criminals. Instead, I think we should be putting pressure on those who develop and manufacture them to make them safer so that more parents will be comfortable vaccinating.
September 15, 2008 at 4:56 pm #56653AnonymousInactiveYou know there are several medications out there that list some serious side effects, but yet they still sell them and they still prescribe them. I don’t think vaccines are any different in that way. The difference i see is that vaccines are One Size fits all and those medications are not.
I don’t think vaccines should be one size fits all and more precaution guilines should be added. Like don’t do combo vaccines or wait until the child is older, ect. Don’t get me wrong, vaccines has saved lives and i am not against them, but again the current vaccination schudlue combine with some funky ingredients is just insane for a tiny baby’s body to handle. This is my personal opinion of course. -
