InactiveI just came from my daughter ped doc today for her 1 month visit.I had told them that the meds( zantac & reglan)was not working. Anyway the peds told me to stop giving her the zantac and to continue with the reglan 4x a day.the peds gave me a presciption for prilosec and told me to give her 1.25ml 1x a day along with the reglan 4x a day.My question is can i give her these to meds? I thought u could not give her these to meds together. And i dont think she gave me the right dose either.

InactiveYou can give both, but they need to be spaced apart. Also, it will take a while for the prilosec to kick in. I am not the expert in this area as we never gave reglan, but I wanted to give you a quick answer regarding giving both of these.
Someone will chime in that has more specifics, how much time, etc…..

Keymastermost peds give zantac & reglan ‘just because’
reglan is for delayed gastric emptuing (DGE) & there is a specific test for this. did your baby have this test? if not, your daughter might not even need reglan. it can have serious side efffects. there are those, however, whose babies DO have DGE and need reglan & they have found that giving smaller doses than recommended have really helped. So, the question is: does your daughter need the reglan?
I’d get to a Ped GI ASAP…
Next: the zantac dose might not have been high enough. from my welcome/intro there’s a link to help you with zantac dosing. once you read that & if you need help with the dosing, we’ll help you figure it out

Finally: the PPI can take two full weeks (14 days) to ‘kick in’
if you stop the zantac it’s as if your baby isn’t on any meds at all. I learned this the hard way! I was like you & freaked out that my baby was on too many meds. I stopped the zantac. YIKES!! Jonah went HOARSE from crying/howling/shrieking so much…So: ues zantac (a ‘proper’ dose) and a PPI can be given- they need to be given at least 2 hours or more from one another. our ped GI said 2hrs & that’s what we did & jonah was fine. others have posted that their ped GIs said 4 & even 5hrs seperate…
hang in there!

Inactiveplease take the reglan serious. This medication in adults has caused serious effects that the company is now being sued becuase of it. It has not been studied in infants and it crosses the blood brain barrier. It can do some really weird things to your baby which include making them fussier. I agree with Laura get a ped g.i. asap.

Inactivethanx ladies for your advice.I made an appt to the peds gi doc but its not till july 18.Anyway,I’ve been reading alot on reglan n it makes me to scared so i stoped giving it to her(my choice)even though she is suppose to take it still. There are too many side affects and i’m not taking any chances with my baby.My insurance did not want to pay for her prilosec.so the ped doc changed it to previced and she told my to put her back on zantac 1.6ml 1x a day & to still give the reglan .6ml 4x a day. but i am not goin to give her the reglan anymore until the peds gi doc says to.

KeymasterI don’t think you’re supposed to quit reglan cold turkey? hmm…
as for the zantac, I hate to be a doubting thomas, but I really rather doubt that one dose a day will be effective at all
…I *think* you should split it into 2 doses…from my welcome/intro (please bookmark it
): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;PN=1&TPN=1here’s zantac dosing: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=836
which states: “Zantac insert from GlaxoSmithKline (manufacturer of Zantac. Your doc should have one. page 4:
“Pediatrics: Oral doses of 6 to 10 mg/kg per day in two or three
divided doses maintain gastric pH>4 throughout most of the
dosing interval” & Also, check
http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/ZAN1494.HTMSo, that’s what I mean about the one dose…
And, for how much: working range of Zantac alone is 5-10 mg per 1 kg
your liquid zantac bottle says 15mgs/ml, so your baby is getting
1.6mls a day: ok let’s say that’s 1 and 1/2 mls to be ‘even’
so: that’s 15mgs (which is one ml)
+ 7.5mgs (which is 1/2 a ml)
= 22.5mgs a day, total
working range of Zantac alone is 5-10 mg per 1 kg
4.4 kilos x 5 = 22.5 for the day
so your baby is 9.7lbs?

Inactivehello laura!
my daughter is 9.5lb. What ur saying is i should split zantac in two dosings n thats the correct dose for my daughters weight right.then that means that they were giving her too much before.Cuz she was only 8.11lb when they told me to give her 1.6ml 2 x a day.Could that have made my baby worse? Now I dont know What to do.I’m more worried than ever.Thank u Laura

Inactivethanx so much Laura for ur info i will call her peds Now
June 29, 2006 at 11:04 am #10771hellbennt
KeymasterNo it’s NOT too much- don’t worry! it’s at the LOW end of the spectrum for her weight- she can get even more zantac than what she’s getting…
yes, split the dose into 2…
she can get up to as much as: 2.9mls a day total split up into 2 or 3 doses
4.3 kilos x 10 = 43mgs a day
to get how many mls of liquid: divide 43 by 15 = 2.9
What I’d do is FAX your doctor. start off with a THANK YOU. then provide the FACTS (according tothe company that makes zantac: ____the dose for pediatrics is___) and simply state that according to her weight and the FACTS, you’d like her dose increased . Then explain that you willkeep her on the increased dose of zantac, giving it at least 2 hrs if not more, seperate from the prevacid, until you notce that the prevacid is being effective, as you realize that it can take up to 14 days for the prevacid to work in infants. then I’d tell what the prevacid dose should be. then you say Thank you
