InactiveI need some advice fast. Our boys have been on zantac for possible reflux (they are 15 weeks). They don’t cry when they eat, they don’t vomit, and they rarely spit up. But they were put on it because they were very fussy. They are also colicky. They wake up around 10-15 times a night. They cry, get their pacifiers, and go back to bed. The doctor doesn’t think it’s medical, but the GI at the hospital gave me a RX for prevacid so I could see if it was. Should I give it to them? If they can be soothed by their pacis, is it something else? It’s the packet kind. What do I put it in??

KeymasterI might first try mylanta cherry supreme (the adult kind) – see if that calms them down…a ml here, a ml there…you cannot overdose- you’ve given too much if it results in loose stools

are they breastfed? formula? what formula? that might be what’s bothering them? (the proteins in what they’re taking, so if it’s breastmilk it’s not the ‘milk’ per se)
how much do they weigh? I’d also check their zantac dose as it’s very weight sensitive.
after trying these things, then it’s ‘time’ for a PPI like prevacid

you’re so very lucky that your ped GI gave you the go-ahead for prevacid.
normally, I’d say “Go for It!!” but you seem hesitant that it even is reflux so I’d try the above things first…

InactiveHello and welcome,
I can’t say for sure whether it is reflux that’s bothering them or not but I can share my experiece with my second child because they sound alot like her. Ellie never spit up but she woke up every 20 – 60 minutes every night of her life until she outgrew her reflux at 8 -9 months of age. She was on Zantac which obviously was not helping her, but I knew nothing about reflux back then, and I didn’t know there were better drugs (like Prevacid).
Anyway, when she woke up she did not usually scream. It was more of a pathetic whimpering, crying, whining, or moaning and groaning. She also usually took her pacifier and went back to sleep. But then she’d be up again 20 – 60 minutes later. All night long this went on. At the time I thought the Zantac was working because her eating had improved, but that she was just a bad sleeper.
Well, one night when she was 8-9 months old I put her to bed and she slept all night without a peep, and she has for the most part ever since.
So, my feeling now is that she was in pain all those months, but that she wanted to sleep, so she would accept the pacifier and try to sleep, but the pain kept waking her up. As soon as the pain was gone she had no trouble sleeping and in fact gave up the pacifier all together at 10 months old.
BTW…what Ellie had was called Silent Reflux because there is no vomiting, but it’s very painful because the acid is backing up and burning the esophagus.
If you feel that they are waking in pain or discomfort, I’d say go ahead and try the Prevacid.
I never used the packets but I think some moms give it with applesauce.
What dose were they prescribed?
Here’s a website with some good information on reflux and PPI drugs like Prevacid.
You can email Joel at marci-kids with any questions about prevacid and he will have answers for you. Here’s his email address. andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu He was very helpful in helping me get my son on the right dose of Prevacid and has answered lots of questions for me.
My son has done very well on Prevacid! I wish I had known about it when Ellie was a baby.
Also, here’s Laura’s intro link. It’s long but has lots of valuable information. You may want to bookmark it so you can read when you have time.

InactiveI agree with Laura. I might also try colic drops (not sure what brands you have there in the US). Other than being fussy, do they have any signs of reflux, like wet burps, arching of back or neck, odd swallowing sounds, gurgly sounding, difficulty being laid flat etc.? Why did your doc think that they had reflux, other than the fussiness?

InactiveHere’s a link to a site that explains some tips to soothe babies and helps determine whether you are dealing with colic or other things….. http://www.disa.com.au/
Did any above mention that if you start the prevacid, it wouldn’t be effective for a while. Sometimes it takes about a week to notice any difference. If you need relief immidiately, try some of the other options mentioned above or try some of the tips on the disa website.
Good luck and hope you get some rest soon.
