InactiveMy dd has been put on Neocate. She was on Alimentum, and I thought she was doing fine on that. However she had some blood in her stool Monday. I figured it was from the cereal in her last bottle. Anyhow, since insurance is going to pay for the Neocate, I’d like to use it. But she doesn’t seem to like it. She will eat 1/2 of what she was and fight with me. She didn’t do this on the Alimentum. Any idea why? I’ve been mixing half Alimentum and half Neocate to adjust her to the taste and that still doesn’t seem to help much. This morning she vomitted after 2 1/2 ounces. The first ounce was her Zegerid. I don’t know how much of that she kept down. Gracie is a silent refluxer, so she usually doesn’t vomit (only occasionally). I know someone mentioned the throat healing while on neocate and that’d she’s pick up eating. I hope that’s all it is. She is 4months old and I’m lucky to get in 25oz a day. Usually 20 to 22oz. Sighhhhh.
OH yeah, and one more question…..why is beechnut cereal better? If she’s allergic to Gerber, could she have beenchnut? Just curious.

Keymasterbeechnut doesn’t have milk proteins nor does it have soy proteins
there are many conflicting reports/views about thickening…some people swear by it. others don’t think it’s necessary…some people think it helps w/ a spitter to keep the reflux down- some think it helps with silent relfux in the same way- what i’ve researched/learned is that is is helpful when a baby vomits so much that s/he is having trouble gaining weight & the cereal is needed for weight gain, also I’ve learned that after a specific swallow study it is determined that a baby is aspirating a thin liquid then thickening is necessary- usally at this point they use an ‘acutal’ thickener like simply thick…like I said some swear by it…
another thought: reflux babies tend to have immature digestive systems so if you’re asking about cereal bcse you want to start solids, many many parents have delayed starting solids until 6 months even though many peds say to start at 4 or 5 months…
you can find links to all of this from my welcome/intro

try mixing the alimentum/neocate more slowly…maybe an ounce at a time? like one ounce neocate and the rest alimentum, then after 4 days, add another ounce of neocate, etc…

InactiveLaura – Thanks. I’m not one that’s in a hurry to start her on solids. She gets strictly formula right now. I was just wondering if cereal helped or not, and if Beechnut was better.
Thanks again!

InactiveJoel recently posted something about babies throwing up Zegerid because of the salt content. Is she still throwing it up?
My son rarely ate more than 18 – 20 ounces per day at that age and my girls averaged 22 – 25 ounces, so her intake sounds fine to me.

InactiveChristine – Thanks. I worry to death about her intake. I’ve read that she should be eating 2.5oz per pound of body weight. She weighs right at 14lbs. That’s 35oz a day…..big difference from what she actually eats. Anyhow, it is good to know that your babies ate.
Thanks!

InactiveMelissa,
Oh, my!! None of my three EVER ate anywhere near that much!! I wouldn’t worry if her weight and growth has been normal at her baby check up’s. I babysat for kids who drank 32 ounces a day, but mine never did. There’s probably a wide range of normal/average for calories needed in babies, just like there is for adults.
There was a few month’s period of time when Myles was taking only 15-18 ounces per day and I was convinced he would just waste away. I even posted about it, and several moms reassured me saying that their little one’s thrived on that little as well. Here’s my post and what the mom’s said.

Hopefully that will ease your mind even more. I know if helped me when I was worried about my little guy.

InactiveThanks again Christine. We do add extra powder to her formula mixture for extra calories and this has seemed to work well cause she’s steadily gained weight. Her ped. gastro has had us doing this for a couple of months. So I guess I really shouldn’t worry about her intake.
Thanks again!
