InactiveMy 6 week old is on alimentum, 7.5 mg prevacid once a day, and 1 teaspoon of Beechnut Hypoallergenic Rice cereal per ounce of formula. Ever since we increased his rice, he is VERY miserable…gassy, kicking his legs, crying out after every bottle. Because we are so new to this, I was wondering…do you think this is due to the rice, or could it just be the all-around effect of the reflux? He was not like this when we were on less rice. His bottle seems to go smoother now that we have more rice, but the 2 hours after each bottle are terrible. Any advice? Silly question…is there any way to get through this reflux without adding rice? My gut feeling is that the rice is the problem. I hope I have made some sense. 🙂 Thanks!!!!

Keymastertry oatmeal? barley?
try w/o thickening?
what’s the formula? could it be time to switch?
I think the RTF (ready to feed) kind are thicker by nature- like Alimentum RTF…
it’s all trial & error, unfortunately

ps: can you put info in your signature?
go to the upper right hand corner of the screen and click on ‘settings’ & from there look for ‘profile’ and from there you’ll see ‘Signature’ – put baby’s name, age, meds & doses (mgs), formula and thickening…thanks!
it’s so hard to keep track of all these GERDlings

InactiveNot everyone thickens. Have you tried not thickening? Does he gag or choke on thinner formula? If he needs the thickening I’d try oatmeal. Lots of babies get gas or constipation from rice, but at six weeks any grain may be a problem for him. Like Laura said, it’s trial and error.
Not fun, I know. July 11, 2006 at 3:14 pm #11351Anonymous
InactiveThank you for your replies! We have tried not thickening, and it is like he is drowning. Plus, he has stridors, so it sounds even worse because of the gasping. With Alimentum being so thin, it is pretty tough for him to take without thickening it. I have not tried Oatmeal. Like you say, it is trial and error, and I will give it a try! Thank you so much.

InactiveHow cute! We get a lot of compliments on his name. I just hope it doesn’t become overly popular because it is so darn cute!

Grady is a great name, too.

With the stridors I can definitely understand needing to thicken. I hope he does better on oatmeal. My three all did fine on it but they weren’t quite so small when I started.

InactiveVisit your local health food store, there are lots of options out there once you start looking…oatmeal, barley, and lots of other grains, too.
I hope it improves!
This site will give you info on dosing for ppi drugs to see if his dose is high enough…
