InactiveHas anyone had an issue with their little ones gagging on the nipple? Alexandra is not a very enthusiastic eater to begin with and she seems to struggle with every nipple that we’ve tried. She’ll be doing fine and then all of a sudden she’ll start gagging. Half of the time, she ends up spitting up everything that she’s just eaten. It doesn’t happen with every feeding, but it does happen enough to have us concerned. One of my friends mentioned that she used “preemie” nipples with her daughter, but that was years ago, and I haven’t been able to find any around here. Any ideas?

Keymastermy friend just had a baby -s sounds very very familiar- nipple problems & gass issues-any chance she’s ‘tongue-tied’????

InactiveI agree – tongue-tied does sound like a possibility – my cousin’s baby had similar problems.
As for preemie nipples, Dr. Brown’s does make them – I think only for
the standard neck bottles. I saw them at Buy Buy Baby not too long ago.Have you looked into a Haberman feeder? Pricey but supposedly well worth it.

InactiveMy son did this…he’d eat fine for about an ounce and then start gagging, and choking. Not every bottle, but as he got older and his reflux got worse it became every bottle. Once he was on the right meds for his reflux the gagging and choking stopped.
I hope it’s not reflux. But that’s how it started with both of my reflux babies…gagging and choking on feeds.
Similac (Ross labs) makes a red preemie nipple that they often give to new babies at the hospital. You may be able to get some at the hospital where you had the baby, or check their website. You can only buy them by the case at the website, so see if you can get a few from the hospital. That’s what I did when I first started having problems with Eliana.

InactiveHailey also used to gag and choke on both the breast and every bottle out there. I thought it was the nipple, but in her case, it was her reflux. I hope that’s not the case for you. Toys r us sells the preemie nipples for the standard Dr. Brown’s (but we’re in Canada). Also, some of the cheepo gerber bottles have nice small nipples, I tried them with Hailey, but we were thickening at the time and I couldn’t get them to flow. Otherwise, they looked pretty good. Good luck.

InactiveHailey had this problem when we tried to switch from the nipples we got from the hospital to ones we bought at the store. I’m not sure if we had preemie nipples (they weren’t red or anything like someone mentioned above) or what but she did not gag using them like she did with other nipples. They were the Ross disposable kind. Thankfully, we had a huge stock of them and used them for months until we finally switched to Dr. Brown’s with success. Another thought that comes to mind is the flow – could it be too fast???
BTW…I don’t think I’ve had a chance to say – CONGRATULATIONS!!!

InactiveThanks everyone! I went back to Babies R Us today and asked about preemie nipples. They had some in the stockroom. Of course, they only have them for the narrow neck bottles so I bought a pack of those as well. If this works out better for her, I’ll have to go back for more!
