Inactivehi everyone. we are just figuring out that baby has silent reflux – so heart
breaking, these screams! we are getting conflicting info about how often to
feed him – some say small feedings frequently, others say large-ish
feedings stretched out more. does anyone have thoughts on this? or does it
just depend on your particular baby?
any help appreciated.
thank you,
stacey

InactiveSmaller, more frequent feedings seemed best for my refluxers, but baby’s will eat when and how much they want, so it’s really up to your little one. I wouldn’t let them cry because they were still hungry to keep their feedings small…the crying will increase reflux as well. The important thing is to not over feed. Some babies are comfort eaters and will eat whether hungry or not, and that kind of over eating will aggravate reflux.
Is he on any meds?
Oh, and welcome.

InactiveYou’re welcome.

How old is your baby? In my experience as a nanny and mom to three, MOST babies will stop eating when they are full and will be comforted in other ways if they are not hungry. For instance, they’ll take a nuk, or be happy to be held or carried. If they are comfort eaters they will want to be nursed or bottle fed whenever they are uncomfortable, tired, or unhappy. You’ll start to get the picture if your’s is a comfort eater. None of mine were, but I took care of babies who were. They tended to have more gas, and spit up more, but none of them had reflux, so that’s a whole different situation. It’s trickier to figure these things out with a refluxer, but with time you get to know your own baby.
Well, I have to go feed my little guy. Good luck.

InactiveI am laughing because I know when I over feed and all the food comes out his nose and mouth like a fountain. It is so bad I think it would come out his eyes if it could! That’s the only way I know when I overfeed.
I would say that smaller feeds more frequent are better as well….

InactiveMy first non-refluxer was a comfort feeder, always wanted to be fed and ate all the time. Hailey started out comfort feeding, but then turned into the opposite (feeding aversion). I think for the most part, like Christine said, smaller feedings work best, but follow your baby’s lead. I’m all for feeding on demand. Good luck.

Inactivethank you ALL OF YOU for your support and wisdom. i really need and
appreciate it!
nicola, our son, will be three weeks tomorrow. the doc prescribed zantac
but i see so little about that drug actually working . . . makes me nervous
to start on that but maybe that’s silly . . .
he has never spit up, so we are extrapolating from other behaviors that
this is silent reflux, although i’m not sure i’d know the difference between
that and bad gas.
i just cut dairy out 2 days ago, and didn’t eat much of it before, but did
eat some.
hope you’re all well and thanks again for your humor and positive
attitudes . . .
