InactiveHello! As a reminder, I got Sarah started on Zegerid last week and things are slowly improving!

I started reading around about MSPI and it got me thinking. My dh has SOME SORT of stomach disorder but he refuses to get tested or treated for it. He has basically symptoms of severe IBS. We’ve thought maybe he was lactose intolerant too? During my pregnancy I kept begging him to go to the doctor b/c I was afraid he would pass these problems onto Sarah and we would at least have a ‘heads up’ if she did start to show problems.
Well….the problems are here! She is being treated for reflux and things are getting better…but they still aren’t perfect.
Sarah was breastfed exclusively until around 3 months. We tried switching her to formula to see if she had an allergy to something I was eating. (Enfamil Gentlease) We went through one 12oz can and I didn’t see an improvement so it was back to breastmilk. A few weeks later someone suggested trying Soy. The can said “improvement in 3 days”. When we didn’t see the improvement we took her off of that as well. She is now off of breast milk and on generic milk based formula.
After reading all of the posts that Laura put together, what is the best way to see if it is MSPI? Do I have to start on Neocate? I read something about Prosobe? What is that?
I realize I probably didn’t “trial” these formulas like I should have but I think I would like to really look into this further.
What’s my first step?
***I was up with Sarah a LOT through the night last night so I had a lot of time to think…and wondered if going to a Lactose Free would do anything or should I just start with the Nutramigen?? We were on Soy for only 3 days so I’m not sure if that really told me anything? If it is MSPI would a lactose free tell me anything? Just wanted some input…THANKS***
Thanks!

InactiveYou can start with Enfamil Nutramigen or Alimentum (sp) you can get them over the counter at most stores. Neocate is for babies who can not even handle the hypoallergenic formulas. It is about $40 a can so that should probably be a last resort.
I know how you feel about your dh. Mine is the same. He has major IBS issues and eggs seem to be a big problem for him. I think he has passed it on to Sebastian. I wish he would find out what is wrong, but of course he thinks it is no big deal and has nothing to do with Sebastian’s issues.

Inactiveprosobe is a soy formula.
usually when a baby has mspi you go on alimentum or nutrimagen. these
are formulas with tiny broken down milk proteins that most babies
tolerate really well.some babes however cant even tolerate those proteins, that is when you
go onto Neocate which is an amino acid formula you get by prescription.
it is disgusting tasting so you have to start gradually.my sons symptoms were fussiness, crying, mucous in the stools. we
swtiched to alimentum after trying every formula first. it worked for
about a month and then the proteins built up in his system. he becamame
fussy again and his reflux was back full force even though he was on
the correct dose of zegerid. (the proteins can build up in the system
and damage the GI tract).laura posted this and it has a ton of info its what made me realize he
needed neocate:

Keymasterwell, there’s a difference b/t
lactose intolerance,
an allergy to milk and/or soy proteins &
intolerance to milk and/or soy proteins –
your dh could have any # of these…or he could react to wheat and/or gluten, amines/salicylates/gluten sensitivities, food additive sensitivities…or none of these…
as for formulas:

InactiveIn researching stuff about Kaelyn’s allergies I read a lot about celiac disease. Several articles said that many, many people are incorrectly diagnosed with IBS when they actually have celiac. Just a thought.
My dh is the same way. He went to the doctor about his symptoms, but downplayed them to the doctor so he said that everything sounded fine. Yet, we are constantly having to work around him running to the bathroom with “pains”. He almost missed Kaelyn’s 20 week ultrasound because he had to run to the bathroom. He just thinks it’s normal because everyone in his family has the same problem.

InactiveMy OB says the same thing – she thinks that WAY more people have celiac
than they know – and that it doesn’t always show up on the tests.

InactiveKim – My dh almost missed our ultrasound too for the same reason! In fact he also completely missed one of my regular OB visits b/c he was in the bathroom the whole time!!!!!!!!!!!!! I laughed out loud when I read that!!!!!!! What’s with these men???????

A co worker of mine has celiac disease. It’s not fun to manage!
I think I am going to do a trial with Nutramigen. It’s worth a shot. How long should I give it? 2 weeks? 3 weeks? Will I notice improvement right away or does this take a lot of time like the Neocate does?
Thanks for all the responses! I’m bound and determined to make Sarah a happy little girl!!! I feel like we’re almost there!

InactiveAmy, that’s funny that he did it too. Paul also missed one of our appointments. I’ve given up on trying to convince him that it’s really an issue.
I would give the nutramigen at least 2 weeks to work. Also, it tastes pretty bad, so you might want to gradually introduce it into her bottle. Like an ounce at a time. It really is pretty vile stuff. We started Alex on it right from the beginning and even then, she took a while to adjust to it.
