InactiveMy grandson, Braydon, is currently on Prilosec. He weighs approximately 15 pounds (at two months old) and they have increased his dosage to 5 ml 2 x a day. Well, my daughter started this last evening, and each time she gives it he refuxes it up within 4-5 minutes. And then he screams like crazy. He is also on Carafate (don’t know dosage) 4 x a day. Because he is on the Prilosec, it has to be timed so that he is getting it about 45 minutes before he eats. My question is this: Has anyone switched from Prilosec to Zegerid due to constant refluxing of the med? Also, can the Zegerid be given at the same time as Braydon eats? It is my understanding that it can. We are really having a very hard time with Braydon. We are also having the Prilosec flavored which I understand also breaks down the medicine much sooner. We have tried giving it to him plain, and there is absolutely no way that he will swallow it. HELP!!!!!!

Inactivehi there-
since you are using a compounded suspension of prilosec i am almost positive you do not have to time with meals. someone will correct me if im wrong.
also-you are right about the flavoring-the best thing to do is to get the flavoring on the side and mix it in at each dose, otherwise you will need to renew the prescription about once a week.
zegerid is an immediate release med and you do not have to time with meals. we give it to our son with formula and he is doing great.
also-have you checked the dosage for Braydon on marci-kids.com?nataliachick72006-8-25 16:55:46

I tried, but I couldn’t figure it out. How much does Trace weigh and what is the dosage of Zegerid he is on? Was he on anything else first? Braydon has been on Zantac, Prilosec and about a week ago the Gastro Doc put him on Elecare. Now the refluxing seems a lot worse. Maybe it just takes time to adjust to the Elecare? supergranny2006-8-25 17:0:52August 25, 2006 at 5:12 pm #12325Anonymous
Inactivehmm now that he is on elecare you should see an improvement. my guess is the dose is too low. plus if you are not getting it compounded correctly it may not even work.
if you go to the dose calculator on marci-kids.com you type in the med you are using, the age of the child and the weight of the child. then it tells you the recommended dose.
do you know how many mg of prilosec he is on?laura is really good at figuring out dosages, i stink at math, im sure she will see this post some time today and help you out.
Trace was on zantac and it didnt work.
he is on zegerid 30 mg. which is 10mg 3 times a day.but soon we are switching to prevacid bc insurance wont pay for zegerid. his dose will be 24 mg a day which is 8 mg 3 times a day.
Trace is about 12 lbs.August 25, 2006 at 5:23 pm #12326Anonymous
InactiveThanks for your help, Natalie. I just went back to Marci-Kids and figured out the dosage for Braydon. According to their chart, for his age (2 months), weight (15 pounds), he should be receiving approximately 10 mg 3 x a day. He is only getting 5 mg 2 x a day. What gives with these doctors? Should we point this out to our Gastro Doc?

InactiveMy friends baby was on proilosec first and now zegerid. Her baby is doing so much better now. He did spit up the Zegerid the first few times, but now he is great. I should add that my baby is also on Zegerid and doing great.
As far as telling the gi, you will probably have to fight to get the right dose. I think most of us had to fight and fight and fight and fight, if you get what I’m saying. If you have to go to another doc. My gi had a know it all attitude which is funny considering that most of his patients probably aren’t doing any better. Poor things. I could just ring the docs. necks for not taking the time to listen to us.

InactiveWe went from Prevacid to Zegerid when Abby was 1 month old. It has been great for us. We mix it with 1 ounce of formula, give it to her when she is hungry and she drinks it right down. We noticed an improvement within a couple of days and total relief by 2 weeks. Once you get the mixing figured out, it is really easy. We mix two large syringes full and put the doses in smaller syringes. It is also cool that it keeps for 21 days in the fridge or 24 hours out of the fridge so it makes it very portable. I really could say nothing negative about the Zegerid. If you happen to get your little one on it, be sure to go to http://www.zegerid.com and print out the $30.00 coupon – it applys to the out-of-pocket amount you have to pay and really helps out!!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do

InactiveAfter reading your replies, I called my daughter and she is going to call the GI Doc first thing Monday am and make an appointment for Braydon to talk about his meds. I am going to go with her this time (not her husband). Believe me, when we leave there Braydon will either be put on Zegerid or we will be finding a new GI Doc. I will definitely fight anyone who is not willing to give my grandson what he needs to get well. We are already very unhappy with the Pediatrician’s office. They have put the silver nitrate 3 times on Braydon’s belly button and it still has not healed. The GI Doc had an ultrasound done today, and we found out that Braydon has what is called “patent urachus” (which simply put, is a tube that connects the fetal bladder to the umbilical cord). Braydon’s tube failed to close after birth, and now on top of everything else, he is going to have to have surgery on his little tummy to correct this. I am hopping mad right now and my poor daughter has just about lost it. This is her first (and last) child and she thinks she is being punished for something she did previously. I keep trying to console her and tell her about all these babies that have reflux, but that doesn’t seem to console her much. We’ll just take one day at a time and hope for the best. Thanks everyone for your help.

InactivePlease go to this link http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/infant_reflux_stress.php print it off and have your daughter read it or read it to her. If she is like me with my first she is too tired to read. I came across it when I was looking for help. Boy how it would’ve helped me when I was first going through it. I felt just like your daughter and now I can thank God for it because I can help other moms. Actually it is my mission now. I am willing to talk to her too if she needs someone to talk to. It is not a burden to me. It actually helps me. I get joy from helping other moms. If nothing else just tell me her name and I will pray for her. I was not a good mom with my first. I found myself about to shake him one night, but thankfully I didn’t. I’m telling you that because if she is like me she may be too ashamed to talk to anyone, but we all go through it.

Poor little guy. I wish you the best with the GI appointment. Your daughter is so fortunate to have your support during this difficult time. I hope you get a script for Zegerid and that your little grandson will be feeling better soon. With the right meds and right dose, it really does get so much better.
When is his surgery? I hope it goes smoothly and he recovers quickly.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

Keymasterfor the doctor’s appointment, I would print out the marci-kids info…I just TOLD the doctor, rather than ASKED. I stated baby’s weight and current dose, symptoms & then I stated what the dose could be…there’s also these links (not sure if it’s just a repitition of what’s on their site?):
Here is an article about Dr. Phillips & it states something about the 1.5 – 3mg/kg a day: http://www.docguide.com/dg.nsf/PrintPrint/3BB968DB207C9D7D85 256936004DA093
Here’s another:http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/1dc8a2.htm (thanks Sherry!)

InactiveI was thinking about you guys and also praying. Anyway, this came to me last night. It’s not some big huge revelation or anything, but just thought it might help. I would tell the doc. that you want your baby on Zegerid and the dose you want your baby on. He will probably say he has never heard of Zegerid and will need to look into it. He will then come and say that it is not FDA approved for babies under a year. This is a crock! You then tell him to tell you what is FDA approved for a baby under a year. My understanding is that nothing, but Tylenol is approved for babies under a year. This includes Vaccinations! I’m quite sure your doc doesn’t tell you to not vaccinate your child because it is not FDA approved. I would look into that or at least if your doc says zegerid is not fda approved say well are vaccinations. I’m sure he will come back with, but there is proof that the vaccinations work and are safe for babies. I’m not so sure about that. Anyway, You can then say well there is proof that ppi’s are safe for infants and they work in infants. Let him know that Dr. Phillips did a lot of research on infants and he is saying that zegerid is the best and the dose he says is _____. Dr. Phillips created zegerid with babies in mind. Zegerid is the same as priolsec except it has an added buffer. That is my understanding. You could do more research on the marci-kids website. I hope this helps. I truely believe in Zegerid and the research that Dr. Phillips and his team have done.

InactiveNataliachick7-
I read that you are switching to Prevacid and your ds dose is 24mg/8mg 3x’s per day…..How did you get his doctor to prescribe this? My dd will be 5 months (14 lbs.) next week and I have tried everything to get her GI or Pedi. to prescribe her more. I have given both of them the Marci-Kids info. and copies of my emails with Dr. Phillips. But neither will increase her dose. Dr. Phillips recommended 10 mg 3x’s per day but I would be willing to at least try another dose of 7.5 mg. They both are not comfortable with giving her a higher dose.
She was crying during feedings and the GI suggested Neocate. I talked to her Pedi. about this and she suggested oatmeal prior to bottles b/c she is eating 32oz. a day plus sometimes a bottle in the middle of the night. This is a lot for her age. She hoped that by adding the oatmeal that would decrease how much formula she is drinking…. but all she does is eat all of the oatmeal and then drink the 6 oz that is left in the bottle. This has helped some, she isn’t crying anymore but is still squirmy. So we might still try the Neocate, but I would still like her on an appropriate dose of the Prevacid. Inactivehe he he…..im just good

no i know, it is very frustrating. in the beginning our ped didnt even
want to use any meds! we started with ar lipil formula and she said he
would grow out of it.anyway, after several ER visits, and me refusing reglan as treatment, i
did a bunch of research and emailed DR phillips. he called our ped and
explained EVERYTHING about reflux and how PPIs are the best. he got her
to prescribe 10 mg of zegerid 3 times a day.that dose made my son so much better! so when we went in for the
prevacid script, i printed out the marci-kids.com calculations and i
said “he needs 24 mgs a day”she prescribed it, no questions asked.
i have to say i am very lucky to have such an open minded
pediatrician-she is really great. i know that dr phillips calling her
made her realize how much my son was suffering and that zantac and
reglan would be worthless in his case.maybe you can find a different doc?
