InactiveThe GI Doc is taking my grandson, Braydon, off Prilosec. Effective tomorrow he will be taking “Pepcid” instead of Prilosec and he will continue to take the Carafate 4 x a day. Does anyone have any experience with Pepcid? I can’t imagine an H2 blocker working better that a PPI. Help! I need some answers for my daughter.

InactiveH2 blockers arent as effective as PPI’s. why did he do that?
is carafate a motility drug?

InactiveNataliachick – I have no clue why he is taking him off the Prilosec. Carafate is used to coat the esophagus from the burn when the infant does reflux.

Inactiveoh ok so its just like mylanta then?
ok, you guys need someone who is strong willed to maybe argue this out
with the doctor. im sorry, but that is just taking a step backwards.have you tried faxing the marci-kids.com info to him?

InactiveYes, I have printed out the information from the Marci-Kids website and in fact, Dr. Phillips even sent me an e-mail and suggested that Braydon be put on Zegerid and gave me the dosage, etc. The GI Doc says that they do not make Zegerid for babies Braydon’s age. Well, he is just full of it! They do make it for babies Braydon’s age because I see it all over the message boards that babies are on zegerid. We are trying to get Braydon into the GI Doc this week or next and I fully intend to take the “printed out e-mail, and Marci-Kids info” to the appointment. I am really starting to lose faith in a lot of doctors that work for infants.

Inactivehaha!! what a brilliant doctor! wow that makes me mad!!
Dr. Phillips created zegerid with babies in mind. tell him to chew on that.
im sorry this is frustrating. hopefully the gi will have more sense.

Inactivezegerid is basically prilosec, it just has an antacid in it. its also
more convenient with babies because you dont have to time it with meals
and can give it with formula.August 29, 2006 at 6:10 pm #12599Anonymous
InactiveI know. That is one of our main reasons for switching him to the Zegerid. Currently, he is having to wait 1 hour 4 times a day after taking the Carafate before he can eat and he is having to wait 1 hour 2 times a day after taking the Prilosec before he can eat. This makes for a very irritable baby and one that does not get much sleep – nor do his parents. I kept Braydon overnight Saturday and I never got to sleep at all because you are constantly trying to either dose him, keep him calm until he can eat and trying to get him back to sleep. This is absurd but my daughter is handling it pretty well. I think Braydon is also “sleep deprived” due to all this.

Keymastercarafate has its place.
it’s like a super duper teflon coating (ok there’s no actual teflon!
) that coats the esophogus- it’s a BAND-AID type medication and does help immediately…however I dont think it’s intended to use over a long period of time- just to help out-jonah used it at night, when his reflux was at its worst ALONG WITH PPI AND ZANTAC- it was just on more med in our arsonal!

InactiveI know that the doc switched him to pepcid, so this is no longer an issue, but prilosec should be given 30 minutes before eating. If you wait an hour it’s actually less effective than if you do 30 minutes. Joel posted a long explanation of the reasons for that a while back, but I can’t find it right now, sorry.
Alexandra is on pepcid right now. Like others have said, it’s an H2 blocker like zantac and I doubt that it will be effective if a PPI wasn’t. I’m actually getting ready to push for a PPI for Alex because the pepcid definitely isn’t cutting it. However, if he’s going to be on an H2 blocker, I prefer pepcid because it tastes much better than zantac. (Unfortunately, it’s also way more expensive than zantac!)

InactiveKayla was on Pepcid and really had great results on it but from what I have read, that is definitely not the norm. We had to increase the dose quite often. Kim is right – it does definitely taste better than Zantac – actually it really has no taste but it is spendy.
Kim: so sorry to hear that Alex is having troubles. I must have missed your post.

InactiveI don’t know too much about pepcid or carafate, but Joel (RefluxSol) once posted a while back that carafate can not be given within a certain proximity of either PPIs or H2 blockers.
Here’s a copy of his comment:

What is his Prevacid dose and what form of Prevacid are you using? If the dose isn’t high enough or not administered in an effective form, then the acid can still be produced and the acid can cause ulceration. Until you can get him on the right dose, you might look into using sulcrafate (Carafate) it bonds to ulcerated areas in the stomach and esophagus and protects them from the acid, which allows them to heal. The trick is, it requires the presence of acid to become activated, and so if it works, then it means that the Prevacid is not stopping the acid from being produced. Once you have the right dose/form of PPI, then something like Carafate should not be necessary. If you do use Carafate, you shouldn’t do so within a few hours of any other meds, as it can lower absorbtion.

Just something else to consider. Good luck.

InactiveActually, now that I re-read this, I’m not sure if he’s talking about reflux meds, or meds in general!? Does anyone know the answer. I did a search, and did find that Janice once posted that she couldn’t give the carafate within 2 hours of the PPI.

Keymastertrue. carafate has to be spaced apart from everything….
