InactiveHello all,
I was just wondering if anyone has suggestions for what positions they use to breastfeed their babies – other than cradle/cross cradle holds. I’m finding that my DD does fine on her left side in the cross cradle, but as soon as she’s on her right side, she starts wailing – I guess all the milk starts coming back up. I have never tried any other positions (she’s only 7 weeks old, and I’m a creature of habit I guess) – but I’m willing to try anything. Someone suggested football hold, but that crunches up her tummy, and she’s not too happy about that. I’ve also heard about the ‘straddle hold’ but from what I’ve read, it seems like that’s for an older baby. Also, she’s had trouble latching on from the start, and we’ve been using a nipple sheild (so no acrobatics please). I guess I should call my amazing lactation consultant, but as she’s currently at a conference, any help from you lovely ladies would be really appreciated. I’m so upset with hearing my sweetie cry at my breast (I feel like she doesn’t like me any more!)

Thanks – Bina

Keymasteroooh… I remember telling jonah “no crying on the breast! you’re not allowed!” it made me soo sad…

I think you should consult w/ your lactation consultant bcse anything I’d recommend requires acrobatics
(you probably want to get in to see her soon anyway, to have her help you with latching some more?)…maybe just try the cradle hold but try & position her so that she’s more on an upright recline?I use the brestfriend pillow (LOVE this pillow!!) and just kinda find a way to lean over somehow to get Ari more upright…

InactiveMaybe you could try lying down on your side at an incline, and position your baby lying next to you facing each other. Help her latch on that way. This way might help her to be more stretched out so her stomach isn’t scrunched, but she’s still somewhat upright. I hope that made sense.
I breastfed my first two boys (no reflux) and the oldest really liked the lying down position (although I never tried it at an angle). Unfortunately, my little one can’t breastfeed because of his cleft palate, although I am pumping milk for him. So I’ve never had to nurse a reflux baby.
Anyway! I hope that helps.Bryce’sMom2006-9-1 15:5:37

InactiveMy son (nine weeks old) has reflux, and I nurse in a couple of different positions. He sort of sits up on my lap, with his legs on either side of my leg, with me in a reclining chair and that works well. We also nurse laying down, with me propped up on pillows and him propped up on my arm. The cross cradle works for us too – we stopped using the Boppy (which I loved with my daughter) because he couldn’t keep anything down while he was laying flat and the football hold is also off-limits for us 🙁
