Inactivemy 5 month old daughter was diagnosed at 10 weeks with reflux, her symptoms were not so much spitting up she was very gassy, arching the back, not sleeping well and shoving her hand in her mouth. once she got on the zantac .5 three times a day she was a differnt baby she started taking two good naps and sleeping thru the night well she did so well the daoctior wanted to drop down to 2 times per day that did not work well she went back on 3x per day a little better but sstill no napps during the day and even waking up at night clearly in pain, I called to dr today asking to increase the dose. he did to .75 3x per day…. my question is she is 17.3 lbs is that a really low dose(what are others on?) and does anyone else have the issue of change in sleep, I mean she went from 1 hr in am and a 2-4 hr in the afternoon to maybe a 20 nap 2 x per dasy sometimes not even that oh and she is clearly tireds falls asleep during feeding but if you put her down she wakes right up….HELP!!!!!!

InactiveHello and welcome,
I’m not sure where the information on Zantac dosing is, but I’m sure someone will post it for you.
Zantac is a very weight sensitive medication and most babies do outgrow their Zantac dose quickly, and after some dosage increases many plateau on it and no longer get any relief. This happened to my second child. Poor baby.
For this reason and others, PPI meds are much more effective in treating reflux in infants. You can read about PPI meds at http://www.marci-kids.com And yes, the short naps can be a sign that she is in pain. Most refluxers do not sleep well until they are properly medicated. My middle child never slept because the Zantac was not helping her.
Also, not all refluxers spit up….your baby probably has silent reflux…that means they don’t spit up because whatever comes up, goes right back down…which is actually more painful because they get the burn twice. My Eliana was a silent refluxer.
I would really push for a PPI medication for your daughter. Most of us here have found Zantac and the other H2 Blockers (like Pepcid) to be quite useless. I’m sorry…I don’t mean to be blunt and pushy…I just want to help.
Good luck and glad you found us.

Inactivechristine you are being pushy thanks it is helpful I am glad to hear others with similar symptoms, sometimes I question if we are med for the right thing-normal 1st time mom stuff- so I will see how she does with the increased dose, which I feel she will do well for a little while but with the weight gain it will go back to bad again, then I am more comfortable going into the doctor asking about other meds…..Thanks again…
