InactiveMy 5 weeks old has reflux and was diagnosed when 2 days old. She was put on Zantac at 2 weeks and it worked for a while and now things just seem to be getting worse. I read that zantac isn’t the greatest thing to put babies on and while I am going to call and get her in tomorrow (if possible) I just dont know what else to do.
I have tried everything I can find on the internet. She sleeps elevated and on her left side. She eats for only like 15 minutes at a time about every two hours. I have cut everything out of my diet that I think could be making the problems worse.
She makes god awful high squel noises, she doesn’t cry during eating (she pops off a lot and squirms, rolls into a ball and than arches her back) but shortly after she starts fussing and wiggling around and sometimes crying, usually until she spits up and when she spits up she gives a short cry afterwards. I keep her elevated after feeding her. To make matters worse, she started spiting up her zantac. This is the short version of all we’re going through. I dont take my prevacid cause I was unsure if it passes through breastmilk but at this point in time, I don’t really care, anything to help her out.
She will also spit up at various times during the day and sometimes its forecful and sometimes it’s a lot of spit up. Also, her spit up smells like throw up. I do not know if this is normal or not.
UGG I just need some help and the best help is from those experienced. Thanks a ton!

InactiveHi,
I’m so sorry for everything you’ve been going through. I know how stressful it can be trying to help your baby feel better.
My advice would be to get her on a PPI medicine like Prevacid (that’s what our son uses). This kind of medicine reduces the acid production which is what causes the pain. My son was on Zantac when he was first diagnosed, and it did work for awhile, but eventually it didn’t. We switched him to Prevacid, and it made a world of difference.
Also, if you haven’t already, it would probably be a good idea to get an appointment with a Pediatric GI specialist.
Good luck!

Inactivei agree, zantac stinks. plus, the taste is horendous and i think it made my son not want to eat even more.
go for a PPI! zegerid is the easiest because you dont have to time with meals and can give with formula!

InactiveHello and welcome.
I agree with the others…most of us have found Zantac to be quite useless because if you can even get your baby to take it
they quickly outgrow their dose and eventually plateau on it even after many dosage increases and get no relief whatsoever. My daughter was on it and never got any better.
My son was on Prevacid and did terrific on it. Here’s a website where you can read more about PPI meds for infant reflux. http://www.marci-kids.com
Good luck and glad you found us. I’ve had two refluxers so I sure know how hard it is.
Hang in there. With the right meds and the right dose, it really does get better. One more thing….about always laying her on her left side…for months I always laid my firsborn on her right side (not because she had reflux – just because she preferred that position….and she developed flattening of the head (there’s a medical term which eludes me at this point) and torticolis. We caught it just in time and were able to correct it, but you may want to watch for that. It’s best to alternate sides with side sleeping babies. Sorry…I know you don’t need anything else to worry about.

InactiveAwh, I’m so sorry about what you are going through. I feel your pain as my daughter is 7 weeks old… it does suck for them to have such issues so young. We started on the Zantac as well but it didn’t do much for her.. I was probably already biased between what we went through with my son (we went through months of hell before treatment) and what I read on here. We’ve been on Prevacid since last Friday and I”m starting to see some positive changes. Hang in there and try to get a PPI.

InactiveWell talked to my mom. Was told today to half her dose. She was getting almost the adult recommended doseage and too much will cause her tummy to hurt and her to throw it all back up. She has been doing better today with just half the doseage. We go back in 3 weeks for her two month check up so I’ll ask about a different medicine than depending on how she does now.
