InactiveZANTAC

he feels “uncomfortable” giving her prevacid since it is not approved for infants. so we started the zantac and have seen a slight improvement in that she is taking in more ounces today (but that could change tomorrow). i even referenced marci kids and he was still unwilling to change it to a ppi!
i dont know what is left to do. i cant seem to find a doctor here on LI that is willing to prescribe a ppi. what gives?September 24, 2006 at 5:42 pm #14183Anonymous
Inactivethese doctors just dont know enough about infant reflux. if you find the zantac doesnt work too well, i would fax the marci-kids. info with a note to the doc saying to please read it and then give you a call once he has. also, you may print out some success stories from here and show that as well. or maybe do some research on GI’sin your state and take her to a different doc. good luck .

InactiveYou might be able to get Dr. Phillips to call and talk to your doctor. I don’t know why they are so willing to give out Zantac when it has alcohol in it. We went to several peds when Colt was younger trying to find one who would prescribe a ppi but we finally decided to go to our family doctor. One think about is that family doctors deal with reflux daily weather its an adult or child. That might be an option for you. Colt still goes to our family doctor for is zegerid.

InactiveMyles sees a family doctor, too. It was she who prescribed Prevacid for him. The only pediatrician in our small town will only prescribe Zantac. Maybe you could try your own doctor…if you have a family physician.
Also, if you want to pursue things with the pediatrician, maybe ask him what drugs ARE approved for infants. He’ll have to admit that very few are, yet they are prescribed anyway. Drug companies don’t do many drug studies on infants and children. That’s why very few drugs are approved for children. Here’s a link to something I sent Myles’ doctor which I think helped to sway her.

And some more info on PPI’s that you may not have seen yet.

Good luck and don’t give up!

InactiveI agree with trying a family practice doctor. We don’t even have a pediatrician. Our FP doc didn’t even hesitate when we asked her to increase our prevacid dose. I think they’re more open minded sometimes. Maybe it is just because they already know how to deal with adult reflux like Kathleen said. Good luck!

InactiveOur family doctor has also been the best for us. The pediatrician that we did see for a couple of appointments suggested switching Abby from Zegerid to Zantac – sorry Charlie, I never went back to him. Why would we mess with something that is working so well. The pediatric GI we went to was also an idiot and did more talking than listening
. He would have looked like this
had my hubby not held me back
. Our family doctor has known us for years and I think that he was easier to convince. Took some work, but worth it in the end. Hope things work out for you!!

InactiveI agree with the others. If you’re having feeding problems, zantac might not cut it. Get Dr. P. to call your doctor, or try to find a new doc. I think I went through our entire province before someone upped her dose of medicine (but even that doc was arrogant and didn’t think that she had a problem). It’s so hard, but doctor shop if you still can’t get him to take you seriously. If there’s one thing I wish i would have done sooner, it was listened to this website instead of my MD… I believed what our docs were telling us, and until I stumbled onto this site and took things into my own hands, nothing got fixed. I honestly believe that if we’d had the meds under control earlier, Hailey’s feeding aversion might not have spiraled out of control. Good luck. Keep fighting!

Keymasterin the meantime, I’d check to see what the ‘proper’ dose for zantac is for your baby
it’s 5-10mgs per kilo, and the liquid is 15mgs per ml…I’d calculate hte dose for 10mgs so you know how high you can go- how much ‘wiggle room’ you have with the dose…the actaul facts about the dosing can be found from the Medicine Forum- the stickied post- scroll down to the purple post (

InactiveI had the same problem at when dd was really young and in pain. I had a horrible gi doc that told me it was behavioral. I eventually found an awsome ped. that prescribed prevacid. But… funny thing was that my reflux just happened to act up so I went and got myself a prescription from my internal med. I also got alot of samples to have around just in case I ran out or to keep some in the car. We pour it in a bit of applesauce, wait 30, then feed her. Sorry about all the problems you are having with the docs! Keep being an advocate for your baby and don’t give up!
