Inactivei just found an old thread with a different dosing chart from ask dr sears, it must be older. it has dosing from 11 lbs. so since the new one doesnt, does that mean its not safe for babies under 17 lbs?
here is the old chart from this old thread:Posted: 28 January 2006 at 12:50pm | IP Logged
Here is the dosing chart from the Dr. Sears website:

InactiveAidan’s doc told us that benadryl was not safe for babies under 17lbs…I started giving it to him at 5 months because he was 17 lbs, but for teething I just use ice cubes in a wash cloth (I held it) or an ice cube in the baby safe teether. They also told me not to use motrin until after 6 months, but I used it anyway because it’s the only thing that works for Aidan, tylenol does nothing.

Inactivenahh technically the med doses are weight based, (my bro inlaw went to med school…well for a while!) which is why heavier babies can take medications earlier than lighter ones. The Motrin rule I just don’t get because on the bottle of infants motrin it has doseing for 6 lbs!!! IT was actually an er doc (not Aidans ped)who explained it to me once but I forgot, I’d call and ask about infants Motrin and if the ped says go ahead, use that( it also knocked Aidan out nicely). He’s STILL teething btw, 10 months old, no teeth…I think he’ll be gumming his food til he’s 10!

Inactivewhen we were in the ER with Trace i was also told no motrin until 6 months. i dont get that if its weight based.

InactiveWell, FWIW they give motrin in spain to babies that are 3months old (including Matthew). Works wonders for teething.

Inactiveusa always has different policies on things like this….does anyone know the reasoning behind the no motrin/benadryl under 6 months thing?

Inactiveusually the reason is that they have not included infants younger than 6 months in their testing. but again, every country has its protocols. call your ped – may say it is OK.

InactiveWe were told that motrin is usually safe, but that there can be renal toxicity, which is why some docs don’t want to use it. We did use it. I once read a case about a baby who died from it.
Here’s a link about the toxicity issue:

Inactivelori, your link just brought me to a sign in screen?

InactiveI’d only use tylenol, but it doesn’t work! I think I’d have to get the rx stuff to get it to work for Aidan. One thing about the motrin, a side effect of it can (*can) be heartburn of tummy upset. Since I read that I usually give him some mylanta either before or after he takes it (not right after).

Inactiveyeah tylenol isnt working……ugh. and im too scared to give motrin or benadryl now.
