InactiveHi to All,
I recently posted an inquiry on this website. I also e-mailed Marci-Kids and asked them the same thing…Here’s the thread from my original question to Dr. Phillips response.
Thanks!
Maria
To Whom It May Concern,
First of all, I’d like to commend you on the current research studies and on the informative nature of your website.
I do have a question. My daughter was on Prevacid Solu-tabs for 15 months (last dose was 15mg a day, but previous to that, around 9 months meds were increased and an endoscopy was performed, which found no physiological or anatomical etiology for her silent reflux symptoms). She’s recently come off of the meds (well, as per the Pediatric GI doc we slowly reduced the meds for a few days). I wondered if you could explain what the rebound effect is and if it happens, for how long does it usually last?
Thanks for your timeRebound usually occurs approximately 1 week after stopping PPI medicine. It is due to Gastrin levels that rise during treatment with PPI, then when you stop the treatment the Gastrin sends a message to the acid secreting cells (parietal cells) to make more acid. This takes 2 weeks to return to normal.

InactiveSo does it always happen? Because my cousin has a little girl who went off prevacid a year ago, and she told me that there was never any kind of “rebound” thing…Maybe there was it just didn’t hurt her anymore? Good to know for when we take Aidan off the medicine, I’ll be able to watch him at a week to see if it is happening.

InactiveHi Jill,
I am unsure of whether it ALWAYS happens. My guess is that each case should be treated on an individual basis…. After all, no two children (or digestive systems) are alike, even though similar medications and dosages are used to treat the same disease. My daughter has had the rebound, which is why I wanted to ask, though I am happy to say that two nights ago she had no reflux at all! First full-night’s sleep in almost 18 months…
I’d say, don’t predispose yourself. Your little Aidan may be perfectly fine once off the meds!
Smiles,
Maria

Inactiveohh that’s awesome! I don’t think Aidan has ever slept through the night, We’re lucky though, all he does is whimper or cry for about 5 mins and go back to sleep (usually). Here’s to more sleeping through the night for you little one!!! He is suposed to be off the meds at 1, and I’m hopeing that sometime between now and them the doctor will tell me exactly how to wean him off b/c I have no idea!
