InactiveOK, I finally get what probiotics are. It took me a long time.
And, we really need them. Why didn’t I see it before? I’m allergic to yeast. You think I would’ve recognized this in Henry.
Anyway, with Lucy, Henry and I having thrush/yeast issues, I got some probiotics today. I have no idea if what I bought is a good one.
Is there much difference between brands?
What should I look for when choosing one?
I’m taking a capsule. I’d like to start giving them to Henry and Lucy. What form do you get for kids? Do you have to get it at a health food store or just any store?
Let me know your experiences.

InactiveWe got ours at a health food store. Someone that worked there showed me what to get. I think if you do a search on probiotics you might find some brand names that others have used. It seems like it was this site that I saw a post about different brands.

InactiveWe used baby Jarrow dophilus. It’s a powder. I think that others have used the primadophilus brand (sorry if I’m wrong…. can’t remember 100 percent).

InactiveWe are lucky enough that the spanish formula that we use has probiotics incorporated…. i really think it has made a difference because even though Matthew does OK on other formulas he does best on this one. (it is L.rhamnosus and B.longum) but who knows… you will probably see a difference with anyone of them! Good luck

InactiveOf course, I can’t remember which ones, but some of the probiotics contain milk, so you might want to check carefully. I know that there have been threads on here in the past about milk and soy free probiotics.

InactiveAmy-
Udo’s Infant Blend contains on milk. A lot of them have lactose in them and Abby’s GI said not to use it since she has a MSPI. I found them online if you can’t find them locally. I haven’t started Abby on them yet but am considering it after we switch meds. Good Luck.

InactiveWe use the baby Jarrow dophilus brand in powder format. You can buy it online or we have been able to get the powder format at Whole Foods. I don’t know a lot about the ones that are dairy free just because that isn’t an issue for us but I do know they exist.
One thing you should know though is DO NOT put it in the microwave ie- in a bottle of formula and then heat. The microwave will kill the bacteria (this is why they say put sponges in the microwave to kill the bad bacteria) so you want to put the probiotic in the bottle AFTER warming it. We also put it in our ds’s whole milk. It’s a bit difficult to mix up because his milk is cold but usually a wire whisk does it.

InactiveThat I didn’t know Leanne. Thanks a bunch.
I think yesterday, I did put it in Lucy’s bottle and then nuke it. I only put her bottle in for 14 seconds, but still.
I bet it mixes better in warm milk?

InactiveYes, it TOTALLY mixes in something warm a lot better!
Now just yesterday I bought a chewable strawberry flavored probiotic at CVS for my ds (2.5) and he LOVED THEM! Asked for more! It’s the CVS brand and it is in the beginning of the vitamins under “acidophilous” (sp?) It is also dairy free.
Yeah, unfortunately I don’t know how long it takes for the microwave to kill bacteria… I’ve melted a few sponges trying to find out though.
