Inactiveok, so as stated in my other post, Aidan has double ear infections and pinkeye and a red raw throat which they say is from some form of hand foot mouth disease. He has been refluxing like crazy, b/c he’s also teething. Coughing all the time. He’s on 30 mg of Prevacid so I’m pretty sure his reflux is pain free if not being controlled very well right now (he’s refluxing a ton, but I believe the meds are keeping the pain at bay). Not really sure what to do, the dr says it’s all due to whatever bacteria is causing the ear infection and to the fact that when teething kids immune systems are compromised. Does anyone out there have a child on more than 30 mg of prevacid? I have some packets left over from before we went to the solutabs and was wondering if anyone thought a little med boost would be in order, and nope can’t go to the doc on this, as we know 30 mg is as high as even the most informed peds usually go.(PLEASE don’t mention Zegred, I won’t even contemplate putting Aidan on it). Thanks in advance all!

InactiveAbby is only on 15mg of Prevacid. But I know how horrible hand foot and mouth disease is. My two oldest girls have both had it and once I got it from them. It is very painful. The sores in their mouths made it nearly impossible to swollow. HUGS to Aidan, I hope he feels better soon.

One quick question……We were going to change Abby to Zegerid, from your post, it sounds like you aren’t a fan of it. Have you had a bad experience with it? I am always looking for input about PPI’s.
Thanks!

InactiveOh, nope he’s never been on it, and I know a Ton of moms who love it, it’s just that he HATES taking any kind of compounded medication, no idea why. And the solutabs disolve in water, which he likes because it’s thinner (I guess?). He’ll suck down motrin and the prevacid, but it’s a battle to get any compounded rx into him..
Sorry I made it sound like I hated Zegerid, I need to go back and explain that more!! (I should say no compounded meds, I don’t think he’d even take compounded prevacid!!!!)

InactiveJill, sorry to hear that he has the hand, foot and mouth. Sarah had it once, the same strain that only causes the sores in the throat, it was awful. Strange though that your doc would say it’s from the bacteria that’s causing the ear infections, since all forms of hand, foot, and mouth illnesses are caused by coxsackie virus.
I hope it passes soon. There have been a few babies on more than 30mg of PPI, but usually zegerid. I haven’t really run into any that I can recall that are on much higher doses of prevacid. We have had Hailey as high as 36mg prevacid. You can see what the marci-kids site recommends, since they’re pretty aggressive dosing wise. Just wondering, though- why do you want to increase it if his pain is being controlled on the 30mg?
Good luck.

InactiveWell, because it’s hard to tell with him if he’s in pain or not, he has been refluxing a ton, I’m a bit confused with this whole reflux flareup, and he’s teething (2 teeth finaly broke through)..I guess I’m just wondering if I just thought the was pain free (reflux wise) beause he started crawling and eating more, etc and is on the 30 mgs of prevacid…and assumed the pain was from teething because he is such a late teether. Now I’m wondering if the prevacid is still working.

InactiveWhat does he do during or after a reflux episode? That may be able to give you some clues as to whether or not it’s causing him pain. Also, how is his eating and sleeping? If the reflux was causing it pain, it might show up in those areas. You could always try giving some mylanta and see if that helps things. Good luck. It’s so hard to figure things out.

InactiveHi Jill, we are still on the 30mg but sometimes I think he needs more. I can’t get the GI or his ped. to prescribe it though. Just thought I’d mention that since I think we may go to the same GI group. If you have extras though…… I really think when they are sick and teething it makes the reflux so much worse… Hang in there….

Inactiveyep, I only went once just to check things out but because Aidan’s reflux wasn’t really very bad we didn’t need to go back. Who do you see there? I can’t remember the name of the lady we saw (it was 7 months ago). Her assistant was very nice and helpful. I was thinking of making another apointment if this doesn’t clear up and ends up being more than a cold thing-I’m not even sure it is hand/foot/mouth, but honestly I hope it is instead of a reflux thing. I think I still have a rx for 15 mg solutabs..I DO have 30 mg packets and was thinking of giving him a packet and a small amont of a solutab until this (hopefully) goes away. Anyway maybe I’ll just give him the antibiotics and wait about a week to see how he is, tehn if things are still the same I’ll take him i nto the GI again…honestly I didn’t like the doc we saw b/c she kind of dismissed him b/c he’s chubby. Told me to LOWER his prevacid dose I said thank you but no. I think it was because he was on 30 mg at 3 months, anyway any recomendations of a good doc in that practice would be great!!! I know that even in the same practice, Dr’s vary with their opinions and treatment choices…on a side note, the erythromycin (sp?) is making his stomach cramp up like I’ve never seen!!!! AND he spit up yesterday..he hasn’t done THAT in 5 months…but the listed side effects are cramping nausea and vomiting-lovely I almost want to just say to hell with it and let the ear infection go away on its own!!!

InactiveWe see Dr. Saripikin primarily at the Gwinnett office. He and his nurse are great. My ped. takes her girls to him too. He is very laid back and the nurse always promptly returns my calls. He insists though Seth is maxed out on the Prevacid dose (he’s about 25-26 lbs.) This is the guy who swears that they outgrow reflux at a certain weight, 27-29 lbs. not an age like some will tell you. I’m not sure which of their offices he goes too though.
Seth had a few ear infections that no antibiotic would clear up. We ended up having to do the series of roceferin(sp?) shots. After a few rounds of that, we opted for the tubes and knock on wood, he hasn’t had an ear infection since. Motrin always helped with the pain too. I used to go through that stuff like candy. Maybe you can try that? I know it is hard but I would really try to let this thing run its course before upping the Prevacid yourself and maybe just try some Mylanta like Lori said to see if that helps.
BTW, where in Marietta are you? My parents live in Dallas, GA (but I did not grow up there). My father retired from Lockheed.

Inactiveoh, I live about 20ish mins (well sometimes closer to 35 with traffic) north of Atlanta, pretty close to the 120 loop (not sure if you’re familiar with that area). Where are you guys? -We went to the Atlanta office.Aidansmom792006-10-10 13:43:5

InactiveJill,
Sorry to hear all you are going through. We had some similar issues with my ds with ear infections. In about a 12 week time period: we had an infection that took 2 round of antibiotics (almost 4 weeks total). He was healthy about 2 weeks and then had another infeciton that also took 2 rounds of antibiotics. Two or three weeks later – AGAIN, another freakin’ infection and it took two rounds to clear up. Now the doctors only viewed that as 3 infections total but I saw the writing on the wall and my kid had already spent way too much time on antibiotics.
What worked for us was taking him to a chiropractor. That really helped his ears drain which is something that the antibiotics can not do. Just regular visits for about 4 weeks kept him infection free for 9 months. And then when he did get that infection it was because he had a nasty cold/ breathing issue. It was also a really cold January in Michigan. But it cleared up right away and when the doctor checked him after 2 weeks he said there was “no fluid. Not even a fluid line. You would never know this kid had an infection…” And that was the last infection he ever had.
We also started him on a probiotic to help counteract the massive amounts of antibotics he had been taking. Overall I think the probiotic helped with his reflux too and that makes sense because they promote a healthy digestive tract.
Good luck.
Oh and Tiffany, that is interesting what you say about kids growing out of the reflux at a certain weight, not age. That makes complete sense to me. My ds will be 2.5 this Saturday and he is just 26 lbs. We just felt such pressure to get him off the Prevacid (family, etc.) so we recently took him off of it cold turkey. I think overall he is doing OK but this could be why it took so long to get him off of it. That and he wasn’t diagnosed (BY ME nonetheless) until 10.5 months old so I think he had some lasting damage from that…

InactiveJill, we are in the suburbs- Gwinnett County (about 35 minutes up 85 north from downtown, near the Mall of Georgia). I work in Alpharetta. I just put Atlanta in the signature since it is the closest big city. We just took Seth to the zoo for the first time over Labor day weekend. He loved it- pitched a fit when it was time to come home. We have not visited the new aquarium yet but hope to soon. Waiting for the crowds to die down!! We saw the GI at the Atlanta office once- I vowed never again. We had an early am appt. and were late due to rush hour. I was stressed/cursing the whole way there because I was afraid they would not see us if we were too late and of course it takes forever to get an appt. with them.
Anyways, hope Aidan starts to feel better soon!!!

InactiveOkay, sorry to mention Zegerid. I am not mentioning to tell you to try it or anything. Just wondering why you don’t want to try it. My son is on it and if it is because you have heard anything bad about it I would love to know.
I hope your little one gets better soon. Sorry if anyone has asked this question already.
