InactiveMy 8 week old son was diagnosed with reflux. Per our
pediatrician’s recommendation, we’ve been trying to thicken his formula
(Enfamil Gentlease) with rice cereal. I’ve been putting 1 tbspn
to 3 oz of formula, and we’re using the Dr. Brown’s bottles with the
Y-cut nipples.Well, tonight, he just couldn’t get it to come out. I mix the
formula with the rice cereal in the blender, and even that was
apparently too thick for him. He was able to get it out last
night and this morning, but I hadn’t even mixed it with the blender. The only difference I can think of is that we used the regular Dr.
Brown’s bottles last night, and tonight, we used the wide neck
bottles. Would that make a difference?Help! I’m really frustrated – we went back to a regular feed of
formula tonight just to make sure he ate, but he was right back to
choking on it, which he hasn’t been doing with the thickened feeds. Thanks!

Inactivei think the blender can actually thicken it too much like to a milk shake consistency. you mentioned he was able to get it out before the blender. try not using it again.
let me know how it goes.October 15, 2006 at 12:06 am #15718Anonymous

let me know how it goes.I did try to mix one up for him just by warming it and shaking it after
he had a hard time with the first one – he still couldn’t get anything
out. Is there a better way to prepare the bottles? Thanks!

InactiveActually, we figured it out this morning – it was the wide-neck bottles
– for some reason, he couldn’t get anything out of those. We
tried a standard this morning with the Y-cut, and he drank almost 2
ounces in about 4 minutes. So it looks like that was the
problem!
He ate a full bottle this morning, only a little spit up and no fussing
at the bottle! Now if I can just get him to take the breast
without fussing, we might be getting somewhere :D.Thanks for your help!
