InactiveHi there,
I have a 9 week old, that from a couple of weeks after birth, has been pullig his knees to his chest, spitting out his formula, crying during feedings and arching his back as well as his stomach moaning incredibly loud (he never would spit up though). The dr. has switched his formula 3 times and I have even switched dr.’s, because I felt that I was not getting anywhere.
*he has always been a very gassy baby and have had hard poops*
Well, The new dr. said that he might have acid reflux. He put him on a stool softener (which causes mre gas) and pepcid. At first he was takin .5ml of pepcid and it seemed to work pretty well right away, until last Tuesday. Vincent recieved his shots and has been worse then ever. The doc, brought him to .8 now (he has a stuffy nose)He is now struggling with every feeding, grunting and moaning loudly every time he brings his knees to his chest (even during sleep), spitting up constatnly, crying and extending his legs in a locked movement.
Could he be on too much meds now?
Plus there was mucus pieces in his spit up and lines in his poop ,could he have a milk allergy?
I am in tears as this has been going on all day and night, everyday for almost a week. Please Help!

InactiveHi and welcome.
I’m so sorry for all you’re going through. I don’t know much about allergies, but it sounds like your baby is in a lot of pain and discomfort from the reflux. You might want to ask your doctor about a PPI medicine like Prevacid. This would reduce the acid in his stomach so that when he does reflux, it doesn’t hurt his esophogus. We started out on Zantac which is like Pepcid, and although it worked for awhile, we ended up switching to Prevacid, and this did wonders. Also, are you putting him to sleep at an incline? That really helps with things too.
Good luck finding some answers.

InactiveIt does sound like it could be an intollerance but I would first try to get on a PPI. Then when you know you have the acid under control you can worry about formula’s. I don’t think he is on too much pepcid. I just really think that those types of medications work for all babies. It does work for some but generally its short term.

InactiveHello and welcome.
I agree with the first two posters. I’d ask for a PPI medication for him. My first refluxer was on Zantac (an H2 Blocker like Pepcid) and she only got minimal relief the first week or two, and then was miserable for the next six months. It just didn’t help her.
My son was on Prevacid for his reflux and it did wonders for him. Here’s a website where you can read about PPI meds for infant reflux. http://www.marci-kids.com
Also, please read Laura’s intro (stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum). It has lots of valuable information which will help you.
Sounds like he may also have MSPI. (Laura’s intro has some links for that as well). What formulas has he been on. The stringy stuff in his stools could be mucous which can indicate MSPI. Constipation can also be a sign of MSPI.
Have you taken him to a Ped GI? You may want to make an appt. right away in case you don’t get anywhere with your current doctor.
I know it’s a lot to take in. It can all be so confusing and frustrating, but once you get the meds right and the formula right, things can really turn around. So, hang in there. We’ve all been there and are here to help you.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

InactiveThanks for your help! I just got off the phone with his dr.office and we have an appointment this afternoon.
He has been on Similac (when born), GentleEase, Nutramigan, and now Great Start Supreme….So fustrating…
Could it just be GAS? I mean, whenever I had to “help” him with a thermometer, thefirst thing would be long explosive gas, then poop?

InactiveGood luck with the doctor’s appt.
It could be the consitpation bothering him, and aggravating things. When Myles was constipated the same thing would happen if I used a thermometer to help him go….a bunch of gas would come out along with the poop. I think the gas just gets trapped when they are backed up.
Based on the fact that he had some initial relief with Pepcid, I would bet that he does have reflux and that like most babies he quickly outgrew his Pepcid dose…..so I would definitely ask for a PPI medication.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

InactiveHi there. I just wanted to say welcome. The other posters have already given you great advice, so I won’t repeat it.
As for your question, “is he on too much medication”, my guess would be that he’s either not on enough, or more accurately, not on the right kind. If he’s having this much trouble, then maybe try a PPI. (Okay, sorry… I did repeat what the others said!)
As for the constipation, that only makes the reflux so much worse b/c their whole system is backed up. Maybe your doc can suggest something to give daily to help him go more regularly- many people on this site have to do that. Some of the options (like mylanta or mom can also help with gas, I believe??)
As for the crying, I’ve certainly shed my fair share of tears!!! Is there someone who can watch Vincent so that you can get some rest for a short while. Try and enlist all the help you can. Even just an hour or so away can make such a big difference.
Hang in there. We all know how you feel. Glad you found us.

Inactivehi there i dont have much time but like the others said i would def. recommend reading over marci-kids.com and showing the info to your doctor, along with asking for a PPI. my son is on zegerid because zantac never helped his reflux pain and he is 100% better. good luck.

InactiveSo I went to the doctor, and I had to see a different one then the norm because he is out on Mondays.
He thinks that Vincent does not have acid reflux and that the pepcid was and is giving him stomach cramps which makes him ball up. He went from .5 to .9 since last Tuesday, twice a day. So he has pulled the pepcid and reduced the stool softener amount. He feels that Vincent is just fine and I am suppose to call him on Thursday with an update.
Well here I sit over 24 hours since the last pepcid dose and he is still balling up, how long does it take to get out of his system?
I have put a call into his normal doctor, as he is in today, just to go over what the other doctor said. And I am thinking of asking about a milk allergy test. The reason for this is….Once he starts eating, his “balling up” stops for a bit and then as soon as he gets to 2oz (I don;t even need to look at the bottle, it is exactly 2 oz everytime)…the balling up starts. Then he fall to sleep and about a hour later in his sleep…he starts to ball up.
WDYT?????

InactivePoor Vincent

What stool softener is he on? Have you asked about trying a PPI? If you suspect a milk allergy you should try a trial of a hypo-allergenic formula like Alimentum or Nutramigen to see if it helps. I would push for a PPI and try a new formula. I would also look into the symptoms in the intro section and tell the doctor what he you think. You might want to get a referral to a pedi GI that has more experience with reflux.

InactiveMyles did the same thing; and always after two ounces.
I think he either has reflux or MSPI, or both.

I’d ask his regular doctor to “please, please” just let me try a PPI. Remind him that these are non-toxic meds and almost impossible to overdose on, and they have minimal to no side effects. Ask for a two week or month trial and assure him that you will keep him posted on Vincent’s condition. Tell him you are his mommy and you know he is in pain.
You may want to print and fax the marci-kids information so you have a better chance of getting an adequate dose.
Good luck, and please let us know what the doc says.

InactiveWow. Two ounces is a “marker” for us too.
I tend to think it’s because maybe about 2 oz. takes the edge of hunger away and then they are afraid to eat any more?I agree, get the doctors to let you try a PPI. You know when something isn’t right with your child… don’t let them make you second guess yourself.
