InactiveSo we switched Abby to Zegerid 8mg 2x’s per day on the 16th. So she has had 7 doses of it and I haven’t really noticed any problems except she is spitting up more. The spitting is usually just during burping but before when she was on the Prevacid she was rarely spitting up at all. Has anyone else noticed an increase in spitting on the Zegerid? If she is spitting up after her bottle that has the Zegerid in it is she getting all the meds?

InactiveMy Abby was a silent refluxer until she started on the Zegerid. I think that because it doesn’t hurt to spit up anymore, that is why they start doing it. Before, they were gulping it back down because it hurt- now it just flows right out. I have heard of others that have had that happen as well. As far as not getting the meds, I think they go to work really quickly so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Do you mix the Zegerid with formula or how do you give it?

InactiveAndrea,
PPI medicines can sometimes delay their gastric emptying because so much of the acid is gone and so it takes longer for them to digest the food. This could be why she’s spitting up more.
Also, we’ve had problems with Bryce spitting up his medicine too if we give it too him at the same time he eats (we use the compounded Prevacid). What I’ve done that helps is give him his medicine about a half hour before he eats. That way he has some time to absorb most of it before he eats (and possibly spits up).

InactiveRobin-
I actually give the Zegerid in about 3-4ounces of formula. I did notice prior to the Zegerid switch that she went from a major spitter on Nutramigen to a slient refluxer on the Neocate. She probably is getting enough of the Zegerid b/c if she wasn’t I would think I’d have seen some major behavioral change by now but she seems happy and is still sleeping through the night.
I just have to get used to the spitting again. I had the best reflex, as soon as I heard the burp, I’d have the burp cloth to under her chin and ready.
I have to get back in that mode again.Heather-
Abby was on Prevacid solutabs prior and doing very well but we switched to Zegerid b/c she was getting very irritated to wait 30 mins after taking it to eat. Plus not being able to eat 2hrs before taking it was also a pain.
I emailed Dr. Phillips about it to see if he had any thoughts.

Inactive8 mg 2 times a day sounds low. i cant imagine that would relieve her pain. Trace is on 42 mg-14 mg 3 times.
i noticed he spits up more on PPI’s. however it doesnt bother him since its not acidic anymore.October 20, 2006 at 12:14 pm #16200Anonymous
InactiveDr. Phillips rec. 30mg 10mg 3x’s per day but her GI would not prescribe that. I emailed Dr. Phillips and this is what he recommended,”The 40mg packet is what you want to use
The reason there is spitting up is that the 20mg packet has a bit too
much sodium bicarbonate in it. I would recommend the following:1. With every feeding give 2mLs of Zegerid along with 2mL Mylanta
Cherry Supreme in the bottle. This way you will maximize the effect and minimize the gas production.Next time get the 40mg packets and then you can contact me and I will give you instructions.”
Since I had already given her one bottle with the 4mgs in it I am just going to give her 1.5ml (3mg) of Zegerid and 1.5ml of Mylanta Cherry Supreme with the rest of her bottles today and start his recommendations tomorrow. But she still spit a lot with her last bottle after I added the Mylanta. The spitting isn’t really bothering her but she wasn’t really spitting much at all with the Prevacid solutabs. If it still continues I am probably just going to put her back on the Prevacid.

InactiveAndrea,
Watch for REALLY Loose stools when using the Mylanta. We did the 40mgs packets/mylanta for a few months and it took Evan a few weeks to get used to the Mylanta. He is now taking 3.5ml per dose so we no longer need to use the Mylanta for a buffer.
I just wished that someone would of warned me about what to expect when using the Mylanta.
Good Luck to you!

InactiveFor her bedtime bottle I mixed the remaining 3mls of Zegerid with 3ml of Mylanta and gave it to her about 10 mins before her bottle and no spitting.
So tomorrow I am going to follow Dr. Phillips rec. and split the dose up with the Mylanta and give it to her before her bottle to see if that makes the difference. I guess it is going to be trial and error until we find what works. Thanks for all the help. I will update everyone tomorrow.Andrea

InactiveSo this morning I gave her the 2ml of Zegerid with 2ml of Mylanta Cherry Supreme about 10 mins before her bottle and NO SPIT UP, YEAH!!!

I’m thinking that is must be too much buffer for her. I am going to try this for a few days and see how it goes. Then I just might try the 4ml dose without the Mylanta just before her bottle just to make sure that is the problem. Then I will have more ammo when I have to call the GI and get a new script for the 40mg packet.Andrea

InactiveOkay, so we have another issue…..now she has diarrhea….GGGRRRR……!!!!
I now that this can be a side effect of the Zegerid but I think that the Mylanta can also cause it. Has any one else had this problem? I knew that I shouldn’t have messed with a good thing (Prevacid). Today I am not going to give her the Lactulose that she normally takes for constipation and see if that helps. If this continues I am going to have to try and give the Zegerid to her w/o the Mylanta and see if that makes a difference if not I am going to have to switch her back to the Prevacid. She already has a red tushie from yesterday.
I swear it is just one thing after another!Andrea
