InactiveMy son is 7 wks old and taking 3/4 tsp zantac 2x day. I called his Dr. to tell him that he does not take it so well. He makes disgusting faces, gags and spits it out. They suggested either putting it in 1 oz of formula, or water OR have the pharmacy flavor it with grape OR (and this one gets me) plug his nose so he is forced to breathe through his mouth and when he does he will swallow the meds. I am wondering how some of you feel about this, I am not going to do it.
Thanks,
Denise

InactiveIn Aus it is peppermint flavoured and I never had a problem with Alana taking it. I used to put it in a small dropper and give it to her when she was hungry- she would suck it out because she thought it was a bottle!
I’m having more trouble with her taking losec, so I give her a bit of a bottle, putting the dropper in her mouth, quickly putting the bottle back in. Whilst its probably not best to take with milk because apparently not as effective, at least she gets something!!!

InactiveThere’s a new form of Zantac which is better tasting. I think it’s called Zantac Efferdose. You could ask for that. Many babies won’t take the regular Zantac because of the awful taste and alcohol burn.
The pinching the nose shut is a lousy idea. I think it might make him choke and maybe even aspirate.
I’d aske about a PPI. The Prevacid solutabs taste yummy and PPI’s are so much more effective for reflux. You can read about PPI meds at http://www.marci-kids.com

InactiveThat was a doctor that said that??? Was he joking???

We tried the grape. It was then the same taste only with grape on top of that. Still really nasty.
I tried a couple things… Adding it to equal parts mylanta. Then I read in the zantac info that antacids counteract the zantac. So now I add it to equal parts fomula(breast milk for us). She takes it really well now.
Are you using a syringe to put it in his mouth? The pharmacy gave us one. I mix the concoction in a shot glass
Finally getting some use out of them after all these years. When you suck it up in the syringe, it all comes out of the glass. So, just out of curriosity, how much does your son weigh? My daugter is 9 wks and only on .7ml 2x’s a day. 3/4 tsp is a lot compared to that. I keep trying to get the doc to up it. I know there’s room to. Especially hearing how much you all are taking. How does it control his pain? Is it helping?

InactiveI will ask for the Zantac efferdose…..thanks! I truly want to try Prevacid though.
Will not pinch his nose but will take the advice to see how the dr. likes it having him done to him as he is a small man and i know that i could get that dropper in his mouth!

Yes we use a syringe and he just spits all teh zantac out, must be keeping some in though cuz acid reflux is the least of our problems right now. Symptoms seem controllable compared to gas!
Still begging for Prevacid. You would think i was trying to get some illegal drug for my baby the way my dr is!

InactiveAlexis use to take it grape flavor, mixed in a little amount of formula and given to her in a medication dispensing pacifer. She took it like that for a long time then once she got older and could tolerate the taste we just gave it to her directly with a dropper but still grape flavored.

InactiveWell, believe it or not, but a few of the nurses we’ve seen at the children’s hospital have told me to give Hailey her meds by pinching her nose, putting the dropper in the side of her mouth when she opens to get air, and then blowing hard in her face to get her to swallow! In fact, the nurse did that when she got her EEG done and she aspirated some of the medication, so not necessarily a great idea!
Zantac puzzles me… why oh why would they ever come up with mint as a flavour for medication! Nasty… like drinking mouthwash!!!

I was told it was originally developed for geriatric patients. Whatever, it is still nasty.
Besides the fact that the PPI’s work better, I just knew I didn’t want to deal with the h*ll of giving Zantac to my dd. My son HATED it with a passion. He wasn’t diagnosed until 10.5 months so by then he was strong enough and knew how to fight it. I felt like I was torturing my kid! The worst was when we were in the airport.

InactiveHunter is taking it now although it’s not his favorite, he is getting used to it. He doesn’t spit it out, but spits up quite a bit of slimy looking formula/medicine mix. YUK!
