InactiveMy 7 week old, 11.8 pound son was diagnosed with reflux two weeks ago and started on Prevacid, 7.5 mg twice per day, for a total daily dosage of 15 mg. MARCI-Kids (http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html#dosingchart) recommends closer to 30 mg per day and recommends 3 doses. My son’s reflux is only slightly improved. Today I asked pedi to increase dosage but he disagreed, suggested a barium upper GI so that I can start son on Reglan. Any thoughts? I’m reluctant to do upper GI and start on Reglan without trying higher dose of Prevacid.

Inactivei would not do reglan. reglan is for DGE and can have some serious neurological side effects. reglan does not do anything for the pain as it does not stop acid production. is your baby in pain?
i would fax over the dosing info from marci kids…15 mg is a pretty low dose…or maybe find a new doctor.nataliachick72006-11-7 22:22:28

InactiveI have read some posts where it has taken a little longer to kick in? If he won’t increase dose could you add some zantac or mylanta until you find a Dr who will? Just to give you and babe some interim relief until you find a solution?

because many many issues are addressed!

reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have DGE. Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.
anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. there ARE other motility drugs out there, such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…
glad you found us!

InactiveHello and welcome.
My son was miserable until he was on the marci-kids recommended dose, which for him was 10 mg / 3 times per day. It took me many weeks to convince his doctor to prescribe the higher dose. I printed and faxed the marci-kids info on dosing, the biographies of the researchers, and some of the other information they have on the safety of PPI’s, etc. I also called continually and told her how miserable Myles was, and ask to PLEASE let me try the higher dose. She finally conceded and within days he was a new baby!

So, I’d suggest pushing for a higher dose, and looking for another doctor if your’s won’t budge. As for Reglan and DGE, I would want a confirmed diagnosis of DGE before giving him any meds for DGE, and I’d ask to use Erythromyocin instead of Reglan. Reglan can have some serious neurological side effects, so you definitely don’t want to use it if your baby doesn’t even have DGE, and if he does there are other motility drugs which may be safer.
Good luck and glad you found us. I hope things are better soon.
