InactiveI have OAL and have had a time with Ben’s reflux because of it. Currently I let my milk spray out (and I mean spray) into a cloth until it stops and then I put Ben back on. He hates this of course, but at least he isn’t choking anymore. Anyway, he still will only eat sometimes for about 7-10 minutes and I am worried that he isn’t getting enough. His diapers are still plenty wet, but he has started pooping less often and sometimes it is green (which i have heard indicates they are getting more formilk and not the hindmilk) If I try to get him to eat more, he fusses, mouths the nipple or arches. What i can’t figure out is if he is full or if it is the reflux. Any thoughts??? He is plenty big 14.2 on Monday, but I am wondering if this new behavior will change this. His sister did the same thing at this age, and she stopped gaining weight. I don’t want to go there again.

InactiveI don’t know that much about OAL, but from what I remember, they recommeneded just feeding from one side a feeding. Are you already doing that? Also, and I know this is probably tough, but a friend of mine had this problem and she nursed lying on her back! I remember I tried it too at one point to see if it would help Brianna. Just a thought. Good luck! I hear this problem does get better as you and the baby adjust. 🙂

Inactivewhen i had my son and was seen my the lactation consulatants i was told to never only nurse from one side. they said to switch breasts every ten minutes bc the other one could get engorged.

have you tried the elimination diet? if he is on a good dose of zegerid and you eliminate MSPI irritants he should be a little better after that.
actually, my son was 100% better after all that, but i dont deal with OALD>nataliachick72006-11-16 15:0:9

Keymasterah, everyone has a diferent opinion
…nursing on one side is called block feeding and it is recommended to some- yes, you will get engorged, but there are ways to address that & eventually your breasts ‘calm’ down and regulate…I would go seek an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) to help you with your OALD. My friend read the articles below that I sent her & they helped her along with seeing an IBCLC- the kellymom info is really good
. Babies can be ok only having a BM once a week even…sounds weird but it’s true (again, check out kellymom) & green stools every once in a while is totally normal too…from my welcome/intro there are links to info about OALD:
Maybe you have OAL, Overactive Letdown?

InactiveI do nurse from one side already.. and have since he was born.. only put him to the other if he seems like he wants it.. like i said,.. I have no problems with milk supply, that’s for sure.. he has started in the past few days to skip a feed overnight, so I am a little engorged right now, but this behavior with him has been going on for longer than that. I’ll check the links, Laura, thanks

InactiveGood luck with everything. I think if there is one thing I have learned, it’s that it seems everyone has been told something different.
But don’t be too concerned about the poops…my daughter was the same way before she started solids…sometimes she only pooped once a week…but when she did…watch out! (haha!) And I do remember some of them being green as well. I acutally took one of Brianna’s poopy diapers into my Dr. so she could look at it.

InactiveSome babies are just really “efficient” nursers – my younger two only nursed for 7-10 minutes also – sometimes less – and only one side. As long as he continues to gain weight, try not to think about it too much – it used to make me crazy, thinking they couldn’t be getting enough – but then I started to look at it as a benefit – less time spent!
