InactiveMy 8.5 week old son Emory (12+ lb) was diagnosed with reflux 3 weeks ago. He has been on Prevacid Solutab 7.5 mg twice per day for three weeks+. I recently sent MARCI info to his pedi and his pedi increased the dose to 30 mg total per day. I started the increased dose yesterday PM.
He hasn’t improved that much since he started Prevacid. On Monday morning, he will have a barium upper GI. The pedi says the next step is motility drugs – either bethanechol (Urecholine) or Reglan. Thoughts about or experiences with those medications? Side effects? Do they work?
Thanks!

InactiveKaelyn was on both of them at different times. Neither of them worked for her, so we didn’t do them for long. Reglan has some scary side effects, but at the appropriate dose can be really effective. Kaelyn acted a little loopy for the first week that she was on bethanechol, but after that we didn’t have any problems with it.

InactiveBryce was on Reglan when he was really little, and it did work (for awhile). I didn’t know about the scary side effects at the time. The only thing I noticed with Bryce was that it made him tired & he slept a lot. Now he is on Erythromycin (another DGE drug). He has done really well with it. It decreased his spitting up dramatically.
Good luck with your upper GI!

InactiveI’d suggest trying the higher dose of Prevacid for two weeks before considering motility drugs AND only using them is he is tested for DGE and diagnosed with DGE. Motility drugs are meant to treat DGE, not reflux. If his reflux meds are working (he’s getting the right dose) he should not need motility drugs. They can reduce spitting up, but the possible side effects are not worth it IMO. My son’s doctor does not test for or treat DGE unless the baby is not gaining weight.
Of course this is just my opinion, and the opinion of my doctor.

KeymasterI posted in another post

that the Upper GI isn’t for testing for DGE…it’s for looking at structiral abnormalities…
so please make sure to ask your dr to ‘humour you’ & ask about testing for DGE specifically so you know wether or not a med for DGE is even necessary…this test is known as a ‘milk scan’ and also known as a ‘stomach emptying scan’ where a marker, which shows up on x-ray film, is mixed with formula and swallowed. The baby then lies in front of a camera for a period of time…(Upper Gi isn’t over a period of time)

InactiveThanks for the information! I’ll try the increased dose of Prevacid for two more weeks and, if no improvement, ask for DGE test before starting motility drugs. Thanks!
