InactiveI have a couple of silly questions… I’ve been giving my son just a little Mylanta with his Zegerid mainly to cut the taste so he doesn’t spit it right out or throw it up. I am noticing however that he is pooping more… really runny and seems to be all tied up with gas.. He’s been squealing like a little pig that past two days. We just started the Zegerid last Thursday, and I can hear his belly popping and gurgling like crazy. What I’m wondering is..
1. Is the Zegerid or the Mylanta causing the gas and the runny poop? I would hate to stop the Mylanta because he really can’t stand the Zegerid alone, but I can’t get him comfortable at all right now because of the gas.
2. Do I have the right Mylanta? Our bottle says it is Supreme tasting and it is Cherry flavored. Is this the the kind that everyone uses or do we have the wrong one?

InactiveNaomi,
Can you see if things stabilize once he’s been on it a bit more? Mylanta does have a laxative effect for many babies. I don’t know about zegerid. That’s the right mylanta.

InactiveI agree with Lori….he may adapt to the medications and be fine with a little more time.
Mylanta can cause loose stools; especially if the dose is too high. How much are you giving him?
Diarrhea and constipation are two of the most common side effects to most meds and often subside once the body adjusts.
Good luck. I hope the Zegerid works well for him and that his gas and loose stools improve.

InactiveI’m giving him 2mls of the Mylanta with his 5 mls of Zegerid.

InactiveI am not sure about the dosage of mylanta for your baby or which might be giving your son gas, but I do know that the cherry mylanta supreme did give my daughter gas…some time after giving it to her, i read that the calcium carbonate can cause gas in some people (in general, not babies specific)…so you could maybe try some other kind…I know I have been recommended mylanta max, and gaviscon which both worked better for Brianna than mylanta cherry supreme…I asked my GI about the aluminum (sp?) in it and he told me you would have to give your baby way more than the dosage he gave me for it to be an issue. Good luck!

Inactive-what’s the dose he gave you for the mylanta max and gaviscon? Adian is the same age, and the cherry supreme has always not worked as well as I think it should for him! He’s also very gassy after I give it to him, and I would love to use something else!

InactiveAlso, maybe try a smaller dose of Mylanta. I used to give Myles 2.5 mls at 5 – 6 months of age. Maybe 2 mls is too much for him right now. Loose stools is a sign of a too high dose of Mylanta.

InactiveAidansmom,
Here is something funny. Two different GI doctors sasw my daughter. One told me 4ml up to 4x a day…the other 1ml up to 4x a day. I always started with just one…if that didn’t work I would give her a bit more, but I tried not to go all the way to 4mls if I could help it. However, before I found this board I had done some research on mylanta and infants, and I did read that for how much Brianna weighted then (at 9 months) 4mls was OK. Make sure if you use the Gaviscon to get the regular strengh only…that is the one that has the ingredient that buffers in the throat…I also read an article, and know I have seen it on here that regular anatacids (except gaviscon) can cause more acid production…I will try to search and see if I can find it…but Gaviscons ingredient (whatever it is called
) doesn’t allow that to happen. Good luckOh here is the post:

InactiveTo be honest, Ben’s doctor suggested that we give him Maalox. But after reading info. on here, we switched to the Mylanta because it was non-aluminum and because it was reccommended for use with Zegerid. I’m not altogether sure that he really “needs” the Mylanta for help with the acid but I am loath to give it up because it helps him take the Zegerid so much better. He used to spit it out or gag and choke. But his gas is definitely worse and making him uncomfortable at times. Should I switch back to the Maalox or try a different Mylanta?? I just assumed that the Cherry Supreme was necessary for use with Zegerid because that’s what Dr. Phillips said???

InactiveNot all moms here are using the Mylanta to give Zegerid. One mom (Nataliachick7) was using dissolvabe tums instead. The medication can be given by itself. The reason Dr. Phillips began suggesting the Mylanta is that some babies throw up the Zegerid because of the high sodium content, and somehow the Mylanta helps to prevent that.
I think Nataliachick7 was using dissolvable tums instead because of loose stools in her son as well.
Are you using the 20 mg packets? If yes, I’m sure it’s fine without Mylanta, but I’m not so sure about the 40mg packets. Does anyone else know…..do you have to use Mylanta for the 40 mg packets?

InactiveI am using the 20 mg packets, and you don’t have to use the Mylanta. I just do to help him get the medicine down. And, I think the Mylanta helps in the evening too. He does still seem uncomfortable then. Would a different Mylanta help him keep it down? I just wonder why Dr. Phillips suggested that particular Mylanta if any of them would work?
November 27, 2006 at 8:46 pm #19097Anonymous
InactiveMaybe you could try the dissolvable tums.
Or email Dr. Phillips and ask him if you could use something else.
I’m sorry to hear that he’s still uncomfortable at night.
I wish I had more advice but that’s about the extent of my knowledge of Zegerid and Mylanta.Have you considered that he may be have some food sensitivies that may be bothering him through your breast milk?
November 27, 2006 at 8:55 pm #19101Anonymous
InactiveI have considered the food sentivities…and I’m sure that has something to do with it, but I haven’t been able to track them down. I’ve been keeping a food journal and can’t make any sense of why he seems better on some days and not on others. He is actually okay at night, it’s just late afternoon and early evening that get to him… I guess this could still just be his age and that “fussy time” that most babies have. I thought I would give the meds a full few weeks before trying the elimination diet to track down the food sensitivities.. can’t say I’m thrilled about doing it around the holidays though! Is there any other way to see if he is MSPI or sensitive to something?? He doesn’t get rashes or anything.
November 27, 2006 at 8:56 pm #19102Anonymous
InactiveOh, and what is Dr. Phillips email address???
November 28, 2006 at 9:59 am #19142Anonymous
InactiveI know what you mean….I wouldn’t too happy with doing any kind of elimination diet around the holidays, either. As far as I know that’s the only way to pinpoint any food sensitivities. The only other thing I’m aware of is a stool sample….but that can only detect blood which may indicate a milk intolerance.
Dr. Phillips email is phillipsjo@health.missouri.edu
He is pretty young, so maybe the late afternoon and early evening fussiness is due to the “meltdown” that many young babies have at the end of the day. Is he napping enough during the day? One of the main causes of the late day meltdown in newborns and young infants is overstimulation and over tiredness.
