Inactivedoes anyone know how much cow’s milk your child should drink a day (when you wean them off around 1). Is there a set amount?

InactiveI asked about this around Myles’ first birthday and many moms posted that their docs suggested around 12 – 15 ounces per day is enough for a one year old who’s eating some solids. I’m sure it varies greatly from child to child. My girls were drinking about 16 ounces per day at a year and Myles is drinking about 11 ounces but he gets another 6-7 ounces in his cereal. (He eats a HUGE bowl of oatmeal every morning).

InactiveThanks Christine…did you find that Myles liked the taste of the milk? I think I read that you mixed the milk with formula at first right?

InactiveYes, I mixed two ounces of milk with 5 ounces of formula intially. It didn’t seem like he noticed the taste difference at all, BUT he doesn’t drink a bottle (except at bedtime) so the milk/formula combo is in his cereal in the morning. I haven’t given him milk in his bedtime bottle yet because I’m still transitioning him to milk and I’m not quite ready to stop the formula completely.

InactiveI hadn’t even thought about putting the milk in Brianna’s cereal. That is probably one of the easiest ways to start. I am really neverous to wean her off breastmilk…I mean she is so sweet and adaptable that I am sure she will be OK…but I just can’t imagine her that grown up!
Sorry to ask so many questions, but since the only formula myles has at bedtime and in his cereal..does he drink anything else (besides water) with his other meals?November 27, 2006 at 1:52 pm #19049Anonymous
InactiveWell, that’s the reason I give him so much milk with his breakfast…he gave up the bottle at 7 months of age (except the one bedtime bottle) and drank nothing from a cup until a month or so ago. Right now he drinks about 2 ounces of water with his lunch and supper. That’s about it.
I was nervous about weaning Myles from breastmilk too, but I had no choice because he did not nurse and I was running out of frozen breast milk. He adapted quite well after he got used to the taste of the Good Start (he didn’t like it at first). If he had nursed I would probably still be nursing him…..I really hated to switch to formula….but we all have to do it at some point.
I hope the transition goes well for Brianna. She’s very fortunate to have been nursed for nearly a year already.

KeymasterJonah did not like milk until he was about 18months old. I just made sure he ate a lot of foods w/ calcium- cheese, yogurt, broccoli, spinach, blackstrap molasses…
I nursed him 2x a day from 12 months to about 13 or 14 months & then 1x a day until 15 months
