Inactivemy daughter was put on zantac at 1 week old. she is now 2 weeks old and doc switched her to prevacid (b/c new formula was causing constipation). the zantac was given 3 times a day but the prevacid is only given once in the morning. today was the first day she took the prevacid this morning and has been fussy this evening. is this normal? is she fussy b/c we switched meds? how long will it take the prevacid to “build up” in her system and work? or do i need to call the doc?

InactiveHI and WELCOME!!!!! Hmmm….sounds to me like her dose needs to be broken up into morning and evening doses? We are not on prevacid but I would say within a week you should notice a definite improvement. We saw improvement in our DD within a week when we started her on Zegerid. Good luck!!!!

Inactivehi there.
PPI’s like prevacid are much more effective when split into 2 or 3 doses beccause babies metabolize them so much quicker than adults. another thing is, many doctors underdose PPIs in infants. you can read about ppi;s are marci-kids.com.
they also have a chart and a calculator that helps you figure out the dose that is most effective for your childs weight/age.November 28, 2006 at 11:11 pm #19240Anonymous
InactiveAlso… sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to see the full affect of the Prevacid (it did for my son). You might want to continue with the zantac while you wait for the Prevacid to start helping. You just have to make sure to space it out from the prevacid.
Good luck, and Welcome!

InactiveHello and welcome.
I agree with the above posters. It can take about two weeks to see the full effect of Prevacid, so continuing with the Zantac is a good idea for those two weeks. Just be sure to space them several hours apart (at least 2 and up to 5 hours).
Also, like Natalia said many docs under dose our babies because they are not aware of the current research that shows babies do better on higher doses given 2 to 3 times daily because they have such fast metabolism that they metabolize and eliminate the PPI meds three to four times faster than adults. Here’s the website http://www.marci-kids.com
Did the doc say the Zantac was causing constipation, or her formula? Which formula is she on?
Good luck and glad you found us.
