InactiveI’m so upset right now, I’m writing this in tears! My 11 week old started on Zegerid just over 2 weeks ago, and we were thrilled to see things improving. He wasn’t great, but doing so much better. At about 10 days on the new med. I really thought we had found our answer. He even took 2, 2 hour naps on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, however, he only took one good nap and the other was back to 30 minutes again, and yesterday and today have gotten worse and worse. He is refluxing bad, spitting out or puking up his medicine so we aren’t sure he’s even getting any, not sleeping well ( he doesn’t fall asleep, he just passes out after screaming and only sleeps for like 30 minutes), having a horrible time nursing, etc. It’s just like it was before we started the new meds.! I’m so frustrated and upset and I’m taking it out on everyone.. my husband, my daughter, and worst of all I’m starting to get mad at him, and I know it’s not his fault! I can’t stand not knowing what to do anymore. Is it possible that a medicine will work for awhile and then stop working again? I’m going to try the elimination diet to see if that helps, but I’ve really already cut out almost everything anyway… I’m so tired of this. I just want this to be over. I almost wish things hadn’t gotten better so I wouldn’t have got my hopes up for nothing.

InactiveNaomi – I am so sorry that you are going through this! How are you administering the Zegerid to him? We couldn’t give it to Sarah straight from the syringe because too much was coming back out, so we mix it in a 1oz bottle of formula. That works great for us. Shortly after we started on Zegerid, I saw the same things happening to Sarah that you’re seeing with Ben. THANKFULLY I realized it was because I was mixing the medicine in the bottle too far ahead of time. I was mixing all his formula/medicine bottles the night before. Turns out, you aren’t supposed to put the medicine in until RIGHT before feeding. Wooops! Ours was an “easy” fix after figuring that out…I hope yours turns out to be an easy fix as well. I can’t imagine that it would completely stop working. There has to be something else going on. He seems a little too young for teething, but it’s definitely possible?!?! Sarah’s reflux became a nightmare when she got her first tooth a few weeks ago. Have you tried any mylanta during his fits?
I think I’ve read of a few babies on here that couldn’t stand/tolerate the sweet taste of the zegerid and would spit it out as well.
I’m not sure what they did, but I’m thinking they switched to prevacid or something. The elimination diet might be a good alternative to look into as well. I had stopped breastfeeding Sarah around the time we started Zegerid (went back to work) and we are now on Alimentum.
I wish I had more ideas for you.
Hang in there and know we’ve all been there too and understand your frustrations!!!!!!!!!

InactiveYou mentioned trying the bottles before, and I did this at first, but he hates a bottle and just gulps and chokes on it. I just used about 1 oz. of breastmilk and I don’t think it cut the taste enough. So, we went back to the syringe with 2 mls Mylanta mixed in with it, and he took it great, plus I think the Mylanta helped with the acid too. I don’t add the Mylanta until just before I give it to him though, so I can’t figure out what’s going on. This week, however, we went down to 1ml of Mylanta because his poops were explosive, and I noticed more gas and thought I was maybe giving him too much. Well, we’re back to the 2 mls now since things got worse. I just hate not knowing what to do. I hate feeling helpless!

InactiveAs for teething.. I don’t think so, but he is drooling a ton more… but the ped. warned me that they start to drool at this age anyway due to excess saliva as they prepare to digest other foods in the future. I also sometimes still see mucous in his stools. Is this an indication that he is reacting to something I’m eating?

InactiveI think the mucous in the stools is a sign of an intolerance to something you’re/he’s eating. I could be wrong though…try searching the forum for mucousy stools and see what pops up. I haven’t had that happen with Sarah…but I really think I remember reading that somewhere on here. I know there have also been a lot of good posts on the main culprits that babies are sensitive to, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head b/c we haven’t had that issue. I’m thinking like wheat, soy, etc…Could the mucous maybe be from too much mylanta also? Hmmm, keep an eye on his stools after you cut back on the mylanta and see if they still seem mucousy.
I wish I knew a trick to cut back on the taste of the zegerid. It is SOOOO super sweet. I’ve tasted it before and it’s too much for even me! I can easily see why some babies wouldn’t like the taste of it. That’s too bad he doesn’t like it in his bottles…I’d say you could try mixing it with more formula, but then you run the risk of him not being hungry enough to eat all of it.

Hang in there and hopefully you can figure something out soon!

InactiveSo sorry to hear things are rough for you guys right now.
When Abby had mucous in her poop, it was because of her formula which was soy at the time so we switched to Alimentum and it went away. It’s so hard to figure out what to try.

InactiveI’m sorry things are so hard right now. I’ve sure been there and I know how helpless you feel.
There’s nothing worse than not knowing how to help your baby.
If he’s MSPI it could take two weeks after he stops ingesting the offending proteins for his gi tract to recover (if that’s the right word), so hopefully things will improve as you continue the elimination diet. There are an amazing number of product which contain soy oils and soy lecithin (whatever the heck that is), so maybe you’ve been ingesting soy without realizing it.
Myles hated all meds at that age and I had a horrible time getting him to take anything. I learned a trick that may help. I used to put his dose of whatever he was getting into a little medicine cup and add a little baby cereal (oatmeal – make sure it’s Beechnut which is soy free if you decide to try this). I’d make it thick enough that I could feed it to him by spoon. The reason this worked well is that it was too thick to spit out easily and when he did push it out with his tongue I was able to scoop it back up with the spoon and push it back in as many times as it took for him to swallow it all. This worked great and I rarely lost any of his dose this way. Maybe poor little Ben is just losing too much of his Zegerid dose when he spits it out.
I sure hope things get better soon.

InactiveI’m so sorry Naomi. Poor little guy! Could he possibly have come down with something? A a cold, sore throat, earache, etc. could make his reflux worse, and make him spit out his medicine… Just an idea.
I hope you can find out what’s bothering him.

InactiveChristine’s idea sounds great. Just keep scooping it up and popping it back in- I think I might try it- the whole syringe thing is getting a bit old.
Since my Zoton is strawberry flavoured I might try strawberry flavoured oatmeal?????? But then it needs to be acid with the delayed released ones, I wonder what strawberry flavoured applesauce tastes like……..

Now if only it came as cherry vanilla flavour- thats what our paracetamol is- Alana just can’t get enough of it!!!!!

InactiveI am so sorry to hear about Ben. I know that when we tried Brianna on Zegerid we had the same issue with her spitting it out…not matter what we did. She did sleep better initially, but when she began spitting everything out, we ended up going back to the prevacid (but making sure she was on a high enough dose) and that is where we stayed. I never did the elimination diet(I wish I had, but I was so new to everything being a first time mom, and I was getting people telling me that was silly, etc), but just to be safe, I avoided all dairy and soy, even hidden….to this day I don’t know if it really helped or not, but it made me feel better.
But I think if you do the elimination diet as it is supposed to be done, and keep good notes when you add foods back in, you might find the answer you are looking for, or if nothing else, closure.December 4, 2006 at 10:02 am #19499Anonymous
InactiveWell, this morning has not started off well. I thought I should maybe give him the Zegerid before he ate, I had been doing it after, and he was refluxing after the meal, and I thought that was the problem. It was even worse. He took it down fine, but after about half the syringe was in, he got this weird look on his face, and up it all came. I had about 1ml left in the syringe (mixed with Mylanta) and gave him that, fed him and then tried about an hour later to get 2 mls in. Nothing doing.. he spit that up as well. I just don’t get it. He was doing fine with it, and still does okay with the other doses.. it’s the morning one that really doesn’t work for us. I think maybe because he’s so hungry and it’s been so long since the last dose??? Who knows. I emailed Dr. Phillips, and he said that if I am using the Mylanta I should use the 40 mg. packs instead of the 20 to cut down on the gas.. It would also taste better for him because it would be only 3 mls of the med. and 3 mls of Mylanta. Maybe this is the answer??? I just don’t get it. He is down for, what I’m sure will be only a 30 minute nap, after crying, throwing up, and squirming all morning.. he just passes out eventually. There’s no “falling to sleep” anymore. I’m covered in puke and he’s already had a full outfit change this morning. I think I’m going to call the Pediatrician and ask about the 40 mg. packet and maybe about the oatmeal idea, Christine. He seems young for this, but maybe it would work???

InactiveAlso, I am supposed to be taking a vitamin and a calcium supplement while on this diet, but they all have soy in them, or some derivitive!! Any ideas???
December 4, 2006 at 10:44 am #19504Anonymous
InactiveI think there are some natural brands that you can take…I actually continued with my normal prenatals and then took citrical tablets…my daughter can tolerate soy oils though…Also, if you look under the MSPI posts, I think there were some that listed safe products, including vitamins and calcium.
