InactiveHello ladies. We went to the dr’s today. As some of you may remember our situation we were going from one dr to the next hoping to find the one who’ll listen. Well, I’m happy to announce that WE’RE FINALLY FOUND THE ONE! She’s not a GI specialist, she’s a regular pediatrician but we absolutely loved her. She was caring, she listened and was VERY thorough. IN fact we’re thinking of switching drs. She confirmed that Ariella has reflux and prescribed Zantac. She is willing to put her on PPI’s ONLY if Zantac doesn’t work for her. So I was willing to try Zantac before she’s put on a PPI. Now here comes my question: Zantac has a terrible taste and the baby absolutely dislikes it. I have to force it in b/c she starts moving her head. Any tricks any of you learned? I was told to give it to her 2 times a day, 1.2ml per dose, 30 minutes before food. Thank you for your input.

Inactivezantac has a nasty peperrmint taste and has alchohol in it which obviously is not good for babies.
when my son was on zantac before the PPI, i had our osco pharmacy make it without the peppermint flavor and without the alcohol.
also, i was told you dont have to time H2 blockers with meals.December 7, 2006 at 7:54 pm #19788hellbennt
Keymasteryou can mix it w/ mylanta cherry supreme to help kill the taste
we use 1ml syringes & squirt slowly along the inside of cheek
1.2mls 2x a day = 2.4mls
that’s 36mgs a day
so at low dose it’s 5mgs per kilo
so that’s 7.2 kilos which is about 16lbs
how much does baby weigh?
10mgs per kilo is 3.6 kilos is 8lbs

InactiveMy son isn’t on Zantac, but hates getting any medicine, so we use the pacifier trick. I give him the bink, pull it out and slowly squirt some med. in the side of his cheek and pop the bink back in… suck, suck, down it goes. I know one mom who just pulls up the side of the bink while still in the baby’s mouth and squirts some in that way. It takes awhile, but it goes in and stays in better that way.

InactiveHi, Laura..I’m sorry but I’m a little confused as how you got all those #s (sorry, lack of sleep). My baby’s a little under 10 lbs now. Was she prescribed too high of a dose? Thanks.
Naomi & Natalia, Thank you for your suggestions.

InactiveIts actually probably on the lower side of her limit by my calculations. at that weight Alana was on 1ml 3 x a day.
The dose of Zantac can range from 5-10mg per kilo of body weight.
10lb is about 4.5kg
so she could have up to 45 mg per day.
Each 1ml of zantac has 15mg (if your bottle says 10mls contains 150mg of zantac)
So your babe could have up to 3ml per day- 45mg. Your current dose is probably at the lower end of her limit.

InactiveOh and unless anyone knows different, you could try and mix it with a little bit of her milk- not sure if you breastfeed but could express some. You don’t have to time it around food is my understanding.

InactiveI’m so happy to hear you’ve found a doctor you can trust. I hope you are finally on the path to finding relief for your little girl.

InactiveThey also have a citrus flavoured efferdose- the tablet dissolves and you give it by syringe. Some people have used pepcid, which tastes much better, but I think is also quite a lot more expensive.

InactiveI use the efferdose- she sucks it through her bottle. Had no problem with her taking it.

InactiveShe is on a good dose but remember when she gains weight she might need to have it increased.
10 lbs = 4.5 kilos
Zantac dosage is 5-10 mg per kilogram.
High side would be 45 mgs.
Low side would be 22.5 mgs.
If you have a local Walgreens you can ask them for some flavoring. My understanding is you need to add the flavoring at the time you give the meds and not before. Natalia is right peppermint isn’t the best thing to give a baby with reflux and neither is alchohol. If this works and you notice that she is feeling better maybe you could ask to try the efferdose.

InactivePardon my question, it may sound silly but what is efferdose?

InactiveIt is Zantac but its a tablet that you dissolve and give it in a dropper or syringe. It doesn’t have the horrible taste and it doesn’t have alchohol. Its just another option and it works better because the taste isn’t so horrible. Oh and no question is a silly question.
