InactiveAfter 6 days of diarrhea I took Sarah to the doctor. She had been refusing to eat/drink very well the past two days and I was so worried about dehydration. I didn’t learn much at the doctor…big surprise. She said if it’s an infection/virus, it should go away soon. If we still have diarrhea in 2-3 days to call her back and she’ll order a stool sample. However, she said there still not much that can be done for “treatment” even if we get to that point. She just said to make sure she’s hydrated.
I found out the reason Sarah isn’t wanting to eat, however…she has a double ear infection! Doah! We JUST finished amoxicillian two days ago!!!
We were hestitant to start her on another antibiotic b/c of the risk of more diarrhea so I’m supposed to wait a day or two before filling the prescription (in hopes her diarrhea has stopped by then). I got Zithromax this time instead of amox. so we’ll see how she does. Anyone used that?Just wanted to update everyone. Still no real answers and I’m praying the diarrhea stops SOON!

Inactiveoh poor sarah!
i hope the new antibiotics help her ears!!here is an idea….maybe try some probitiotcs while she is on antibiotics (but space them like 4 hours apart)
i bet that will help with the diarhea, as it will help restore the balance of bacteria in her tummy!!
just look for a milk.soy free brand!December 12, 2006 at 4:49 pm #20170Anonymous
InactiveLove Trace’s new picture!!! Where can I get probiotics? We don’t have any health food stores near by. Just good ol’ Wal Mart. Is feeding yogurt similar to the same thing?

Inactivethanks.
yes, BUT, yogurt is milk based and i noticed she is on alimentum.
second, yogurt has a tiny amount of probiotics compared to the actual capsules you can buy. they have a ton more, which works much better.
some people on here order theirs online, though i cant remember the sites, maybe someone willl chime in.
i think walmart may have them too, they just probably wont have a milk.soy free brand which you may want.December 12, 2006 at 6:16 pm #20182Anonymous
Inactivewell.. i would def get so probiotics.. no healthfood kinda store at all?! hmmmm.. i guess you could order them.. on know moms on here use a soy/milk free one. but we have shane on ones that have a “trace amt of milk”, and it doesnt seem to bother him. i could let you know what it is if you want to order it, plus i keep hearing the jarrow dohpilus one is really good!

InactiveOK so here goes…I might be really stupid to even think of trying this…but I just talked to the pharmacist. He wouldn’t even fill my prescription for the antiobiotic for a few more days until her diarrhea goes away. He did suggest the yogurt though. HOWEVER since she is on an hypoallergenic formula he said only give her 1 tsp. of yogurt twice a day to see if there is a reaction.
For those of you who don’t know…I am not sure if Sarah even NEEDS the alimentum. We started it the same time that Zegerid was kicking in and she’s been soooo happy ever since I’ve been afraid to switch back to milk based formula. I didn’t want to wait two whole weeks to see if she reacted poorly and then wait another two weeks to switch her back to alimentum…
Would this be a good “test” or am I stupid to even consider it? The pharmacist said she NEEDS good bacteria in her system after 6 days of diarrhea. I WANT to start her on the antibiotic for the ear infection to go away so she’ll start to eat again and I won’t stress out about dehydration…oh it’s all so stressful!

Inactivei would do the milk free probiotic rather than yogurt:
1) probiotics have many more pro microrganisms than yogurt.
2) this is prob. not the best time for you to do a dairy trial. if it fails you will have a very unhappy baby.December 12, 2006 at 7:00 pm #20186Anonymous
InactiveWhat would her reactions be to a teaspoon of yogurt if she does have a milk intolerance?

Inactivethese were my experiences:
refluxing, in pain, crying, fussy, not sleeping well.December 12, 2006 at 8:17 pm #20190Anonymous
InactiveHi Amy,
Zitromax usually works much better for my kids than amoxicillin. Hopefully it will do the trick for her ear infections.
Myles finally got over his diarrhea. He had it for six days. It was the worst diarrhea any of my children have ever had. He’s doing great now. Hopefully Sarah is just about done with her’s as well.

InactiveChristine! I’m so happy to hear that!! That gives me hope! Her stools today have had a *little* more substance than they have been…so I’m hoping that means she is turning the corner…but the frequency of them is still abnormal…so we’ll see. I’m so glad Myles is feeling better!!!
I noticed while I was in the pharmacy drive thru that the script for the zithromax was only for 5 days and she put 1tsp for the first day, and 1/2 tsp 1x a day for 4 days. Is that because of Sarah’s diarrhea or is the dosing just that much different with amoxicillian and zithromax?
I also realized something about my “dairy trial” with yogurt…the doctor told me today that babies with prolonged diarrhea can develop a temp. milk intolerance b/c the bacteria that helps digest it has been swept away. I reminded her that Sarah is on a hypo-allergenic formula and it shouldn’t make a difference. BUT she might react poorly to the yogurt because of the diarrhea/milk intolerance and then I’ll get the false impression that she can’t tolerate milk period. So maybe now isn’t the best time to trial…but I want so badly for her to have some good bacteria in her system! I wish we lived closer to a health food store. That’s southern Illinois for ya…corn fields and cows!

InactiveThat’s how things started improving for Myles. On the 6th his stools finally started to have some substance…not all liquid….but they were still very frequent and very loose. They gradually got better and better and in only a 24 hour period became normal again. Sounds like Sarah is on her way to recovery.

Zithromax is always given that way. A double dose the first day and then 1/2 that dose for four more days. It actually stays in the body for 10 days. I don’t know how but 5 days of meds is actually 10 days of coverage.
Yes, it’s true that babies can develop a temporary intolerance to dairy….but it’s the lactose they have difficulty with….so I would think if she does have this problem you would notice it with the Alimentum. Doesn’t Alimentum contain lactose?
I planned on keeping Myles on Soy for at least a week because of the possibility of lactose intolerance from the diarrhea but he’s already showing signs that he will become consitpated on soy so we’re doing Good Start for a while.
I hope Sarah is doing great tomorrow!!

InactiveYa know, I’m not even sure if Alimentum has lactose in it. I guess I assumed it DIDN’T…but I could be way off base. I just looked at the label and I can tell you it has a lot of hard to pronounce ingredients!
I am so ready to be DONE with all this! I HOPE that she is 100% better by Christmas.

Inactivealimentum is NOT lactose free, just to let you know. and it has milk proteins in it, just very broken down.

InactiveThanks Natalia! All I know is she does really well on it! Maybe Christmas break will be a good time to trial a little dairy. I’ll be off the whole week. Since we’ve talking about it anyway…
I mentioned before I don’t want to switch her formula because everyone is happy on it (except for my checkbook). Regardless, I’m still curious about her tolerance of milk. We were talking about yogurt tonight, what other “small steps” could I take to see if she has any reactions other than switching her formula? Our ped. today suggested trying to wean to a new formula around 11 months so we’ll have an idea ahead of time if she can do whole milk. Any other suggestions?
