InactiveMy daughter (6 1/2 weeks old) was dxed with reflux yesterday after what
seemed like a sudden start a few days ago with painful crying and no help
from gas drops. She doesn’t spit up a lot, but was last week while she
was sleeping. She has the hiccups frequently and eats well.
My Ped put her on 2 1/2 ml of mylanta 4 x per day. I gave her three
doses yesterday (after the ped appt) and we’re on our second dose today.
Has anyone else started this way and did it help? Last night was awful.
Today she’s still having painful cries, but maybe less? Last night I was
ready to start her on the Axid the dr gave me that he said would be the
next step. Should I be more patient? I can’t stand to see her in pain. I’ve
read a lot about PPIs and am tempted to talk to him about them tonight
(the ped is supposed to call me tonight when he arrives for his 6pm shift).
We are feeding her upright, keeping her upright for at least 15-30
minutes after eating and letting her sleep on an incline. I also checked all
the nipples on her bottles to make sure they weren’t too fast or too slow
(tipped them over to see if a couple drops came out rather than a lot or
almost none).
Can anyone tell me how fast we can expect relief from the various
treatments (antacids, drugs like zantac/axid, or PPIs)?
Many thanks in advance,
Elizabeth

InactiveIt does somewhat depend on the different remedies you are offering… the Mylanta should provide instant relief from the burning, as it coats the esophagus and stomach, but it won’t do much for the long term acid issue. For that you will need an H2 blocker like zantac. My son is not on one, but from what I understand, these can be very helpful for awhile and usually you see improvement right away, but the dosing is extrememly weight sensitive, so you little one could outgrow it quickly. They also seem to plateau on these. I really think a PPI would be the best bet. There are several good ones, but they do take a little longer to do the trick. Sometimes up to two weeks to see full results. Lots of moms use Zantac until the PPI kicks in. The best thing to do is to look at information from http://www.marci-kids.com Most doctors underdose infants when they should actually be getting more meds. because of their fast metabolism. Check out the site, and take the information with you to your next appt. Most babies don’t get full relief until they are on these types of dosing.
My son has been on medication for his reflux since 1 month old, and we are just now getting the right dosing and combination of drugs for him. Don’t get me wrong though. Things have definitely improved from those early days. Hang in there!

InactiveGenerally it takes about two weeks to see the full effect of a reflux medication. Some babies get relief much sooner….especially from Zegerid it seems. My son improved some in the first few days after starting Prevacid, but it was 10 days before we saw the complete turn around.

InactiveThanks so much everyone. I’ll speak with our Ped tonight and try to
convince him to put her on a faster track.
Thanks and best,
Elizabeth

InactiveGood luck. We were always told that with a PPI you should start to see an improvement within a few days, and then by two weeks, you should see a big difference.

InactiveI’m glad to see this post–Elizabeth, I am new here, and am going through virtually EXACTLY the same thing you are, my son is the same age and just got diagnosed. We are taking Zantac though and I was wondering when I could expect relief.
