InactiveI know that every pediatrician is different and every baby is different…but I was surprised to hear another mom at daycare say that her ped. gave her the go-ahead to feed ice cream, green beans, and mashed potatoes to her 6 month old. Hmmmm??? I am perfectly happy feeding Sarah jarred baby food and I’m in no hurry to start table foods, it just caught me off guard. Lately, I haven’t even cooked a meal that I would even CONSIDER feeding Sarah…but is this typical advice? I understand the green beans…but not the other two foods.
What are the “typical” first table foods that you start and at what age? I was reading some developmental books and at 7 months it said “able to feed self a cracker” and I’m thinking “wait, am I supposed to be feeding her crackers???”
What have you all done?

InactiveI started my babies with Cheerios and Gerber puffs, and followed that up with diced fruits and veggies. Crackers are a good first food, but I tried to avoid those early on because the white flour crackers are worthless nutritionally and the whole grain ones are a little too tough for very young babies to eat…so I held off on crackers until they were old enough to eat the whole grain ones (around 12 months).
It’s amazing the different opinions people have about what and when to feed their babies. I met one person whose granddaughter was eating cole slaw and baked beans at 5 months of age!!
Her parents didn’t believe in baby formula and fed the kid condensed milk.
Personally I like to keep my babies on baby food until they are old enough to eat a healthy and balanced self-fed diet. Too many toddlers are living on crackers, french fries, gold fish, and other nutritionally useless foods (at least in my opinion).

InactiveEvery child is different, that’s for sure. My daughter didn’t get teeth for a long time, so it was hard to figure out what to give her. We probably started with those puff cereal bites that they sell in the baby food aisle…. little pieces of banana worked great, pieces of cooked vegetables, yogurt, we probably did do mashed potatoes. When she got a little older and had more teeth, I would cut up a grilled cheese sandwich… cooked plain pasta, cheerios, teething biscuits, pieces of bread, waffle, etc.
You could get a baby food grinder and grind up some table food first to get her used to the different taste. I’ve tasted baby food, and it is so bland.

InactiveOK thanks! At least I’m not way off base. I know reflux babies in general start solids later, but I wasn’t really sure on the guidelines. I tried some of the puffs (even though the container said 12 months). Sarah didn’t really know what to think and kept spitting it out.
I wish I knew how to paste a big picture of her eating one on here(and not just the signature picture) b/c it was funny to watch. Anyone know? Yes, Sarah is on rice cereal and loves it. I haven’t tried oatmeal or any other grains yet, but we’ll work on that in a few weeks when all of her other illnesses are over with!
I never thought of a baby food grinder, but I can see how that would be useful.

InactiveA friend of mine was just telling me about one of her friends whose baby is 7 months old. She doesn’t do baby food, she just purees whatever her family is eating and serves it to the baby. If the puree is too thick, she uses gravy to water it down. It blows my mind!

InactiveYeah, I have a friend who never bought baby food for her two children. She did the same thing….pureed whatever they were having for dinner. I’m on the opposite extreme….I buy TONS of baby food and give it to my kids until they no longer want it. Eliana (she’s 3)STILL eats a stage 2 container of carrots or sweet potatoes every morning with her breakfast.
Maybe I’m weird but I figure it’s veggies, so why not?December 15, 2006 at 2:38 pm #20499Anonymous
InactiveClaire was on baby food for a long time too, and I was sad to see her give it up because I couldn’t figure out how to fit all those veggie servings into her diet as well as I did when you could just open a jar!
My mother, however, thought I was nuts. She was of the baby food grinder school too… never bought a jar of baby food (with 4 kids!) except for going on trips, etc. It sure would save tons of money, but I can’t imagine doing that right from the start… at least not with little refluxers. It makes sense to do it though when they’re a little older.

KeymasterI made a lot of home made purees for Jonah. I had 2 other friends I met in a moms grouo & we did a co-op; each week each one of us would cook a batch of something & then we traded. For some reason I always seemed to wind up cooking pears, lol.
this time around I’m really interested in this approach as well- it’s called child-led solids- scroll down to the photos/captions from the first link at least- interesting!

InactiveAidan only ate baby food til about 10 months when his 4 teeth came in, he still only has 4 but he had chic fil a nuggets for dinner, and ate an apple for (well not a whole on) at lunch. Then again my nephew started on table foods at 6 months, he had all his teeth and was just ready! I think every baby is different!

InactiveWow, I can’t imagine feeding Sarah what some of the mom’s you know were feeding their kiddos! Condensed milk…yeeesh!

Right now I feel so good about the food Sarah is getting. I realize it isn’t cost effective, but it is such a great feeling to know that she is eating FRUITS and VEGETABLES! That’s a heck of a lot more than I can say for myself! Sometimes I’m feeding her and I’m thinking “ugh, you’re eating peas…gross”…but of course I’m smiling saying “open wide…yum yum!”. I did buy a can of grean beans at the store yesterday and thought it would be fun to see if she can eat a few. I’m sure they’ll come out whole in her diaper, but it’s an adventure! I’m excited to try it tomorrow.
I am going to wait a while on the ice cream, goldfish, and french fries!

InactiveThat’s sounds like a good plan. Some of the babies I used to babysit loved to feed themselves peas and carrots. I’m going to cook some tommorrow and see if my little guy will eat some.
Myles is back to refusing most table foods since his bout with diarrhea. I don’t know why, but I’m glad he eats plenty of fruits and veggies in pureed form. He did eat some veggie chicken patty today so maybe he’ll start eating table food again soon. I won’t be giving him any ice cream, gold fish or french fries either!
