Inactivewe are trying to wean Brianna to whole milk, but here is the problem…she won’t drink it…well not more than a few sips. My ped said she needed 24 oz of milk a day…I don’t even think she ever drank that much breastmilk…any ideas on how to get her to drink it? I know my sister gave her children Ovaltine, but I wasn’t sure what age you could try that.

Inactivepersonally, IMO, toddlers dont “need” to drink a certain amount of milk. several baby books i have read say the same thing.
milk isnt even that good for us….
is she a good eater or a poor eater?December 18, 2006 at 2:05 pm #20684Anonymous
InactiveShe is a great eater…she only has two teeth, but she eats like she has 12.
I guess you are right, maybe I shouldn’t worry so much. I know babies need calcuim, but there are so many places they can get it from.December 18, 2006 at 2:10 pm #20685Anonymous
InactiveFirst I wouldn’t be concerned so much about the number of ounces. There seems to be a wide variation in how much different doctors say a baby of a certain age should take. My girls NEVER drank 24 ounces a day, and Myles never drank more than 15 ounces until he was 13 or 14 months old. He now takes in about 17-18 ounces a day (7 ounces of that is in his morning oatmeal).
I’ve heard some docs say they need as little as 12 – 15 ounces of milk per day.
Is she nursing? Does she take a bottle? Or a sippy? It could be a taste issue in which case you can try getting her used to the taste by slowing mixing the whole milk into her formula or breast milk so she can get used to the taste.
Also, you can make sure she’s getting calcium from other sources…yogurt, cheese, broccoli (I think broccoli has a lot of calcium….I puree tons of it and Myles eats it almost every day).
I’m not a fan of things like Ovaltine and Chocolate milk (too much sugar) but that’s just me.

InactiveYou might try mixing the milk with expressed breast milk, then slowly increasing the milk.
My kids aren’t big milk drinkers either, but you’re right, there are lots of other calcium sources – greens, almonds, beans, broccoli, yogurt, cheese. There are ways to replace the dietary fat that they need too.
But, I think sometimes it just takes time to get used to it. It did for my boys. It just tastes so different from breastmilk.

InactiveOops. I just repeated a lot of what Christine said. Took too long to push “Post Reply”.

InactiveThanks guys…you know, I have tried the breastmilk thing, but the problem is, I never gave Brianna even breastmilk in a bottle or sippy cup, so it is almost like she doesn’t like the taste of breastmilk if it is not coming straight out of me (I told you Christine…high maintenance
But I LOVE her dearly!!!). I will keep trying that. I pumped and stored some just for this occasion….In the mean time, she is still nursing 2X a day, but we are cutting out the morning one tomorrow…wish me luck, Brianna is ready for this, but momma isn’t really!

I remember it being so hard emotionally for me to wean my babies from breastfeeding. It was kinda sad to give up that special time with them & admit that they were growing up, & not quite babies anymore.December 19, 2006 at 1:12 pm #20726Anonymous
Inactivewell the morning went OK..I was a nervous wreck about it, but Brianna took it all in stride….and she did drink the breastmilk combined with milk this AM…maybe she just needs to be thirsty enough.

InactiveOh, good!!
Hopefully she’ll continue to drink the breast milk / milk combo and eventually will accept plain milk from a cup. Myles still won’t drink milk from a cup. Only water. He’s really stubborn and quite particular!December 19, 2006 at 4:57 pm #20741hellbennt
Keymasterjonah didn’t drink any significant amt of milk until 18 months
I kept offering every day but he wasn’t interested- this was at 12 months & I was breastfeeding 2x a day
from 12-15 months we went from 2x a day to once to weaned
he ate lots of ypgurt, cheese, broccoli & blackstrap molasses (rich in calcium & iron)
dr told me not to worry about the milk

InactiveBrianna does eat yougurt and cheese a lot…I actually got the molassas but haven’t tried it on her yet…I am giving the whole milk two weeks becuase of possible MSPI stuff from before, before I try anything new. That makes me feel better about Jonah…I guess I will just keep offering and not worry. We are down to one BM feeding a day (as of today), so maybe she will drink more as she realizes that there isn’t any more morning milk from me anymore.
